The phenomena of UFOs are fascinating. They continually spark human imagination and speculation. And yet here, on the D.R., it is impossible to discuss the topic without quickly deteriorating into a mockery session, - usually at the expense of BBob.
The reason this annoys me is that firstly, I enjoy a good speculation bull session about UFOs. Secondly, unlike most people who make arbitrary claims about their political/theologic/cultural beliefs, at least BBob posts sources for his claims such as YouTube videos. Obviously we can disagree what is alleged to be depicted in those videos, but they certainly provided more of a basis for discussion than most opinion pieces posted on this site.

And, for what it's worth, I once saw a UFO. I'm not claiming it was an alien intelligence come to Earth. But it was a completely strange phenomena for which I have never heard an adequate explanation for.

UFOs exists because a UFO is an UNIDENTIFED Flying Object. If you didn't know what a balloon or a plane was, then those are UFO's. The problem is that those who believe take such leaps of logic that it defies a reasoned response.

True story: I lived in Boulder in 1996 and every night I saw a UFO fly by overhead. It looked like a star, but was cruising. I saw it every night for 30 days, but no one was ever around when I did. Finally, I saw it and someone was sitting next to me and I said "do you see that in the sky" and they answered "what, the satellite?"

I learned a lot about UFOs that night.

When I was in college in the early 70's, a mini-cult grew up around Neil Young's song "After the Gold Rush".

People would go camping in remote areas and chant, pray and dance beseeching the UFO's to come down and begin their task of "flying Mother Nature's silver seed to a new home in the sun".

No alien ships ever responded, but it was a cool place to make it with that cute little hippie chick from philosophy class when you were both way too hip to go on a conventional "date".

Sounds like a NEST turtle watch. Funny how sleeping on the beach watching for turtles to hatch gets college girls in the nesting mood.

I saw a UFO once, as well. A "clear photo" of it, as someone in another thread demanded as proof, would show no more than what I observed: an elongated object with clean lines and no external features and a white, grainy glow. No claims for extra-terrestrial origins, either.

I've encountered some people who were truly, madly, deeply into the UFO phenomenon. They struck me as folk for whom the UFO concept had taken a role in their lives more traditionally associated with religion. Also met and talked with Travis Walton, who claims to be an abductee, and thought he was completely full of shit. But I'm open to examining evidence.

That was just the fentanyl from your colonoscopy.

Actually, I thought it was navel lint.

Better that than naval lent.

As Kanrei said, the problem is not with acknowledging that certain "unidentifiable" objects have flown through the sky, but with the illogical leap taken by some enthusiasts that there must have been an alien or secret government conspirator flying the object. It's the latter that results in (and deserves) mockery.

Better that than naval lent.

Is that the 40 days before easter when at sea?

As I described in the past, the UFO I saw was very large (many times larger than the moon), perfectly circular, cloudy gray colored, remained perfectly still in one location in the sky for about half an hour and then traveled off in a perfectly straight line. Also it was sunny afternoon and there were no clouds in the sky. Thousands of people saw it.

I find it funny that the B-2 probably inspired a hell of a lot of UFO stories.

I honestly think that most UFO citings are simply experimental aircraft being developed by the gov't or possibly a private corporations. Even if you get some Air Force pilot who says "I know all the planes out there and there are no planes that can fly like that" Doesn't negate that there may be an experimental aircraft with that capablity but that government has decided the cost to build and further develop the aircraft isn't worth the whatever advantage it would provide.

Astro,
There is some credence to that theory. Both the US government and the Soviet government did all they could to foster belief in alien ships to cover any accidental viewings of experimental aircraft.

Well I'm sure it's still going on today. The government is still developing experimental aircraft. And you'll likely see some really bizarre stuff with all the research going into UAV's.

And it doesn't really have to be classified stuff, just planes people are unfamilar with like the Super Guppy, en.wikipedia.org , which flies at really slow speeds which makes for a bizarre effect.

Or the Lockheed Martin Skunk Works project P-791, www.youtube.com .

"As I described in the past, the UFO I saw was very large (many times larger than the moon)"

Many times larger than the moon? The moon is about 1/4 the size of earth. Are you saying the UFO you saw was about the size of the planet earth?

"it was sunny afternoon and there were no clouds in the sky. Thousands of people saw it."

Is there any documentation of this incident? Do you remember the date? For such a large UFO with so many observers you'd think there'd be some documentation of this event.

I saw a UFO once. Looked like a regular satellite or something, like a bright light in the sky, but then it started stopping and going over and over, without any speeding up or slowing down. It would be completely still, then start instantly going the previous speed, then instantly stop and be still again. Finally, after one of the stops, it went from a bright whitish light to a dark red, and disappeared. It was in Maryland around 3am, and I was like WTF!

But yeah, if you can't see why Boob deserves what he gets, I don't know what to tell you.

yea I think that was the same fat chick that sat in front of me in the theater...really pissed me off.

Just what is better'n butt'n fuzz??

Nutt'in spetin a full sweater made frm a buncha!!

Interesting topic.
I saw a UFO once and the experience bothered me for years.
Then I realized if something shoots from one side of the sky to another (for hours), is apparently solid and does not make a sonic boom...
it can be only an image. Right? Physics can not be denied here.
Notice how many "sightings" occur near military bases. I believe these are psy-op tests which appear to work very well if "coasttocoastam.com" is any indication.
But then, people also believe delusions like printing money and borrowing till China owns us will make a healthy economy...

The phenomena of UFOs are fascinating.

Not to me.. I get annoyed watching people on the History channel claim conspiracy theory after conspiracy theory.. take the the most outlandish claims people make as fact, and when someone points out that its not possible aerodynamically for an object shaped like some of these supposed UFOs to actually fly.. they simply brush it off by saying that these aliens have science that we don't.

There are occasionally flying objects that are unidentified.. the most logical assumption, is that they come from earth..

If people find this wild speculation interesting.. fine.. speculate away. I don't.

True, NMG, I especially like the abduction nuts. The speculation is wild.

why is it impossible to have a discussion about ufo's?

hmmmmmm...because talking about the power of crystals and faeries is far more interesting?!?

A few years ago I'd occasionally see dirty-white spheres that hover and fly at incredible zip above traffic without much inertial interference (travel against the wind) and can turn invisible. Apparently they would come up to my windows at the old apartment. I once caught a pair near the front door at eyeball height - they were apparently listening to our discussion on NASA. As soon as they realized that I was watching they would They would turn a translucent blue with purple hazing and zip away smoothly, then up at a jagged angle toward what I will refer to as a canal. From other observations the spheres either wait to be greeted by another sphere, appear to go higher still or travel horizontally - which I could see other white spheres already following throughout the weeks. Once spotted they often go "into the sun" and thus out from view before making any course corrections. There are also red spheres that I've only witnessed far above me in the noontime clear blue sky. Maybe they are testing weather? But the objects near my person are looking for what? Good taste in music? Oh, they like to sit along the chemtrails. Maybe they are testing albedo?

I've moved twice since then and have only had one strange experience recently with a dragonfly. It appeared unaware of it's environment while hovering in a pattern in front of myself and a neighbor. She was astonished when I slid out "that appears to be artificial" and walked on past. I think the fact that we were already in a rush to leave that may have contributed to the confusion, but the pattern confirms some of what I would naturally suspect. We have so few waterways immediately nearby that I'm confused from where these large black dragonfly's are hatching, but nature finds a way obviously. This particular one may have contracted a parasite, been sprayed with pesticide - it's effects ensue or something like a backyard fountain could have transported plants and larvae. I'm not concerned so much as fascinated. We've got Boeing and military quite cozily arranged only miles from this location and get to watch military jets pair off in their typical imposing vigilant controlled manner. Lots of room for mischief when you are planted in the midst of a society. It's to be expected.

This premise has been demonstrated in different films. Listening devices, observing tools and a controlled environment are their playthings.

These spheres are a totally different branch of spy technology then.
