FATHER'S DAY MUSIC THREAD. I hope all of you will help me out with this music thread tonight as it looks like no one was going to put up a music thread. When the music pros like A1 and the others show up they can take over. Tomorrow is Father's Day. If your Dad is no longer here, put up any songs your Dad may have liked during his time. Or play tunes you as a Dad yourself like and play all the time and your kids have grown up listening to them. Your Dad into cars or surfing? Play some songs. A favorite uncle like a Dad to you? Play his favorite kind of music. No rules, if you like a song, play it.

My Dad loved Louis Prima and Keely Smith.

He'd make a batch of margaritas when we had company over, put Louis Prima on the turntable and party. He loved to dance.

For you Daddy --

"Just A Gigalo" and "I Ain't Got Nobody"

Boy did my folks like to dance to this song --

In The Mood - Glenn Miller Orchestra

My Dad loved Buddy Rich too!

He bought a drum set (just the pads) and cymbals and the drumsticks and would play along to the songs he liked -- would drive my Mom nuts sometimes. lol

I've always thought this Skynyrd tune was wayyyyyy under-rated....Mr Banker...

Ronnie Van Zant and Gary Rossington

Mister Banker
Mister please, how much does money mean
Won't you reconsider mister
Won't you do this thing for me
Ain't got no house
Ain't got no car
All I got, Lord, is my guitar
But you can have that mister banker
Won't you bury my papa for me
Oh mister banker please
Listen to the way I sound

I would not be here on my knees
But hey mister banker
It means so much to me
Oh won't you reconsider mister
Won't you do this thing for me

I told you mister
I ain't got no house
Ain't got no car
I got me a 1950 Les Paul guitar
Won't you take it mister banker
Won't you bury my papa for me
Oh mister banker please

Like this one, too!

John Prine doing a Steve Goodman song, and doing it rather well, I might add...

Father and Son

Spud can post lyrics however.

Leader of the Band.

A quiet man of music
Denied a simpler fate
He tried to be a soldier once
But his music wouldnt wait
He earned his love
Through discipline
A thundering, velvet hand
His gentle means of sculpting souls
Took me years to understand.

The leader of the band is tired
And his eyes are growing old
But his blood runs through
My instrument
And his song is in my soul --
My life has been a poor attempt
To imitate the man
Im just a living legacy
To the leader of the band.

My brothers lives were
Different
For they heard another call
One went to chicago
And the other to st. paul
And Im in colorado
When Im not in some hotel
Living out this life Ive chose
And come to know so well.

I thank you for the music
And your stories of the road
I thank you for the freedom
When it came my time to go --
I thank you for the kindness
And the times when you got tough
And, pap, I dont think i
Said i love you near enough --

The leader of the band is tired
And his eyes are growing old
But his blood runs through
My instrument
And his song is in my soul --
My life has been a poor attempt
To imitate the man
Im just a living legacy
To the leader of the band
I am the living legacy
To the leader of the band.

Happy Fathers Day.

Then happy Papas Day to you too.

Spud hasta werk tommorow or Spud would be taking his own Pops out fer a round of golf and a couple more rounds at the 19th hole.

As it is he's getting a bottle of Chivas and a card.

Funny thing about being a father.

You take yer kid to sports practice, coach him throughout the years, encourage him and caajole him into being the best that he can be and then when he does actually make it and is playing in the bigs the teevee camera will at some point focus on him and then he will inevitably turn towards it and mouth the words "Hi Mom!"

I think I remembered some parts of your post the other night on the car thread --

Bull. Your father adopted and raised you. He did it because he obviously loved you and wanted you for his son. He could have cared less what party you affiliated with when you grew up.

Now play a song for him.

My Dad sang Workin' Man Blues....and lived it to a "t"...right down to the nine kids. There were 5 girls and 4 boys in my family...until my oldest Brother drown in '92. Himself a Papa of 3.

little more upbeat

Hi all! I miss you to A 1!! Nuttin' wrong with fish ties Sir Spud, I love fishing. Just stopped in to say Happy Fathers Day Chris, maybe next week I can stick around to play tunes. God Bless!

Your father adopted and raised you.

People who allow anything to take control of their lives are not mentally healthy. When it is pure, raw hatred that is always on the mind of someone, this is particularly true.

I simply cannot imagine being as full of hate as rasta is. To be so consumed with it that it would be all I could talk about.

Life must be incredibly miserable for such types. I wish I could tell him to allow happiness, not hate, to control your life, but a mind that troubled needs far more help than I could possibly offer. All I can do is wish the best for him and hope one day he allows something other than hate and angst into his life.

Good luck, ratsa. I really mean it even though you have told me you wish me dead.

A Father's Song

a political father's song

Very nice selections, Truth!

Very nice indeed.

Couple more songs about fathers from a coupla brothers.

Father Father by Marvin Gaye

Dance With My Father by Luther Vandross

Back when I was a child
Before life removed all the innocence
My father would lift me high
And dance with my mother and me and then

Spin me around till I fell asleep
Then up the stairs he would carry me
And I knew for sure
I was loved

If I could get another chance
Another walk, another dance with him
I'd play a song that would never, ever end
How I'd love, love, love to dance with my father again

Ooh, ooh

When I and my mother would disagree
To get my way I would run from her to him
He'd make me laugh just to comfort me, yeah, yeah
Then finally make me do just what my mama said

Later that night when I was asleep
He left a dollar under my sheet
Never dreamed that he
Would be gone from me

If I could steal one final glance
One final step, one final dance with him
I'd play a song that would never, ever end
Cause I'd love, love, love to dance with my father again

Sometimes I'd listen outside her door
And I'd hear her, mama cryin' for him
I pray for her even more than me
I pray for her even more than me

I know I'm prayin' for much too much
But could You send back the only man she loved
I know You don't do it usually
But Lord, she's dyin' to dance with my father again
Every night I fall asleep
And this is all I ever dream.

Be Well.

/And Yes, Spud is aware that Marvin Gaye's dad never deserved a Father of the Year award but that song is just so cool, ya know.

//Speaking of Bad Dads...

Papa Was A Rolling Stone

~Was (Not Was)

Nuttin' wrong with fish ties Sir Spud, I love fishing.

Spud does too.

Ever watch "Deep Thoughts by Jack Handey" on SNL?

My girlfriend Marta sez that the interesting thing about fishing is how it's about two lives connected by a slender thread.

...That Marta!

Spud misses you too.

Come back and play when you get the time!

Be Well.

A man walks on this earth
For not so very long
And he wonders what
He'll be remembered by
When he is gone.
So he struggles through the years
Down a road he paves
With hopes and fears
Trying to carve his name
Upon the wall of time.

And so it is, my son
That I stand here now
Looking o'er the years
Of all the sweat and tears
That crossed my brow.
All the battle plans I drew
And all the mountains
That I tried to move
Lay behind me now
Like miles of sifting sand.

....(chorus)

But of all the things I've done
I'll never be more proud
Than of you, my son
And of all the dreams I've had
It meant more just to hear
You call me "dad"
More than any wealth or fame
Or any glory I wish I could claim
More than anything I'll ever do
Son, I'll always be most proud
Of you.

Now you stand before me, son
On this golden day
And it's plain that you're a man
No more a child at play
But through a haze of tears I see
That little boy
Who once looked up to me
And realize that I'm the one
Who now looks up to you.

Spud was gonna chuckle further but then Spud remebered a similar incident with a tiny tater tot and a "Popeil Pocket Fisherman" (tm) many moons ago.

Be Well.

/Fess up, who else owned one of those contraptions?
//Spud couldn't have been the only suckah.

You were three years old.

Balls were bouncing in the gym.

Children were running, shooting baskets.

Among all the chaos

I saw you grinning at me

wanting me to watch you.

You waved at me - I waved at you.

You showed me how you could dribble.

The moment froze in my memory.

You were three years old.

I picked you up from day care.

You were excited about learning to swing high that day.

Driving home you told me all about it.

You were so excited

Then you got quiet and said,

"I love you - Daddy"

The moment froze in my memory.

You were three years old.

I was making supper.

You were watching TV.

As I walked by your room

I heard you singing by yourself

with the songs on Sesame Street.

I stopped and listened.

The moment froze in my memory.

As you continue to grow -

frozen moments continue to fill my heart.

While they may seem insignificant to you

they are golden to me.

Frozen moments are memories

that make the soul rich.

A rich soul

makes life complete.

Fess up, who else owned one of those contraptions?
//Spud couldn't have been the only suckah.

I got my 7 year old a pump action shooter fishing contraption that he saw on TV and had to have. Out of the box it fell and broke, after a few tears back to target and got him a regular pole!

A Child's Hug
There are times when life overwhelms us.
We talk and try to resolve our problems.
We seek the All Mighty's Mercy.
From the helpless we ask, they deem us crazy.
We run around in circles to the point of dejavue.
When we finish the round we start over again.
While sitting watching closely, a child wants to be wooed.
We have no time for childish things worry is in our brain.

Gentle tugs we most surely ignore.
While the little one is waiting to adore.
Some times the little tugs free us from our entangled world.
In the huge eyes our worries dissolve into a smile unfurled.

Longingly the child invites to be embraced.
We of instinct respond as though we are giving.
If a child is Heaven sent, then we are not giving but receiving.
It is a child's hug that permeates our soul and thus we are graced.

Raising Child
My raising task seems filled with just two vital things
At first to give her roots and then to give her wings

In diapers needs a child love and touch unbound
A soft kiss sturdy hugs and deturge bottom ground
Consistency in warmth and caring is the earth
To grow deep baby confidence and rooted worth

Comes later need to spread herself without the ties
That baby relished pointing visage on new skies
Our open arms to come and go she'll one day want
For feather pinion means to fledgling wildings flaunt

As for myself as father follow just one adage
In doing all I do above all do no damage

under my shirt
at rest on a chair,
snuggled by animals
was a little face there.

her smile was a big one
when her eyes looked at me
but they wanted to close,
they were ready for sleep.

this picture was perfect,
I know, for it seems
her Daddy was sure
to be in her dreams

angel in my arms

www.youtube.com

All lathered up in a Santa Clause foam beard

in the reflection of the mirror my little one appeared.

He came equipped with a toy shaving kit.

He said, " Daddy let's get rid of this fuzz and chat while we're at it."

I was just amazed at my son's initiative to converse.

I suppose he is ready to accept advice maybe he is not so adverse.

I thought to myself this is definitely quality time.

I'll dispense all my philosophy to a willing ear and it won't cost me a dime.

Son, life is like a shave with a razor blade.

Some times we catch all the whisker on the up stroke.

Some times we miss them and cut ourselves on the down stroke.

The point is, your face will reflect if in the morning mistakes you've made.

"Daddy, I have no whiskers I have no blade.

Why are you telling me this stuff about life and shaving."

I don't want you to make the same mistakes I've made.

I don't want you to hurt yourself by unnecessary risk taking.

If you learn to be careful with a toy razor without a blade,

what a smooth face and life you'll have by the choices you'd made.

Plenty of practice you'll get before your whiskers get tough and hard.

Smooth and smart you'll be because you earned your Shaving School Card.

Parental Promise

Little baby with poopy pants,
You've put a damper on my romance,
Before your birth, I was Casanova,
With nary a thought on developed ova,
Now Mom won't wear her sexy lace,
Practical cotton has taken it's place,
I, too, am tired from midnight feedings,
I have no energy for impassioned pleadings,
So I will simply go to bed,
"Good night, I love you", is all that's said.
I dream my dream of passed nights wild,
And swear you'll be my only child!

ok enough of this sappy shit, time for bed!

I got my 7 year old a pump action shooter fishing contraption that he saw on TV and had to have...

LOL!

Yup, that was pretty much the story with the ole PPFisherman thingy of Spud's halcyonic youth except Spud managed to catch one fish with it afore it imploded.

it was funny to hear my 9 year old explain why you shouldnt buy stuff advertised on TV.

"They wanted to get your money so they advertised it"

Out of the mouths of babes.

My Dad looks a whole lot like this guy in the old pics of him as he was leaving the service after WWII.

www.worldculturepictorial.com

He snuck into the Air Force at 16, but still missed all but the Berlin Airlift, where he was a navigator on some of these planes.

"For the U.S. military, however, the Berlin Airlift carried more significance than victory against a new enemy. The service branches had worked together, something many had worried would not happen with an independent air force. And the airlift became a model for future humanitarian airlifts. Aircraft specifically designed for air cargo operations were designed based on the lessons of Operation Vittles: the Lockheed C-130 Hercules, C-141 Starlifter, C-5 Galaxy, and the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III, which can carry more than 17 times the amount of cargo as a Skymaster."

i just don't know what to say to you anymore except i hope you'll make a better daddy than you had.

Paradise

When I was a child my family would travel
Down to Western Kentucky where my parents were born
And there's a backwards old town that's often remembered
So many times that my memories are worn.

Chorus:
And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County
Down by the Green River where Paradise lay
Well, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in asking
Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away

Well, sometimes we'd travel right down the Green River
To the abandoned old prison down by Adrie Hill
Where the air smelled like snakes and we'd shoot with our pistols
But empty pop bottles was all we would kill.

Repeat Chorus:

Then the coal company came with the world's largest shovel
And they tortured the timber and stripped all the land
Well, they dug for their coal till the land was forsaken
Then they wrote it all down as the progress of man.

Repeat Chorus:

When I die let my ashes float down the Green River
Let my soul roll on up to the Rochester dam
I'll be halfway to Heaven with Paradise waitin'
Just five miles away from wherever I am.
