The main opposition candidate in Iran, Mir Hossein Moussavi, was said to be ready for "martyrdom" Saturday as thousands of protesters clashed with police in protests that defied warnings from Iran's supreme leaders.

and obama still says little if anything right here at what could be the beginning of a world changing event

and is there ANY DOUBT that the iranians are emboldened by what they see in Iraq, thanks to american men and women..

NO there IS NO doubt............

This is pure afkababble. Iranians "emboldened" by heroic Americans. It's the fear of Heroic Americans that kept The A-man in Tehran's White House. Please DON'T share details of your last date, BL2. herm

Shrewdly played on his part. Now he has raised the M word. It's puts Ahmapajamahead in an awkward position of creating a martyr which would further fuel the unrest.
And it gives his supporters something to rally around should he be killed.

please

dont try and tell me that young iranians havent looked at freedoms we have given to iraqis and have thought that they could have the same freedom such as voting in a real election

and by the way...any of you noticed some of the women in those streets without all that garbage covering them up.
some of them are pretty hot......and thats doesnt have a lot to do with the subject but it didnt hurt either.........

any of you dicks hear the speech from the SUPREME LEADER yesterday ..

he blamed obama AGAIN for getting in the way..

so why not just go ahead and support these poor people mister president???

and oh yeah

THE ALWAYS POPULAR

DEATH TO AMERICA CHANT...

dont you just love that..

Whatever your position, whatever your politics, go to Andrew Sullivan's Daily Dish page...(live tweets from Iran are coming in) and look at the 1:42 and 1:25 posting of a young woman protester dying on the ground, blood oozing from her mouth and nose as her compatriots try to stem the flow.
I don't have any words for this...

^^^^
never has it been more evident that you don't know what the fark you are talking about

that was for AFK ;)

At this pivotal point in history Obama is making sure he is not rocking the boat in favor of democracy and freedom and he is taking thumb twiddling lessons in the Rose Garden from Jimmy the Pussy Carter.

women in those streets without all that garbage covering them up

Iranian women almost always go out without veils. The women are more liberated in Iran than almost any other Islamic country (Turkey is probably the best). Iranians are also not Arabs. They are Persians.

Iraqi women used to be quite free to wear what they wanted in the streets. That was back when Iraq had a secular regime.

Then some big meddling country came in and screwed it all up for women's rights. Now they are back to hiding their faces from Talibans.

While Moussavi is awaiting martyrdom Barry is awaiting thumb twiddling lessons in the Rose Garden from Jimmy the Pussy Carter.

Failed Widely Thom,

How do you reckon this is any of our business? Are we afraid Iran will insist on self-determination?

I mean, no one is shocked by the realization that there is political strife in the middle east or in persia.

What business is it of the US which titular leader is used? The assholeatolla is in charge no matter who wins the election.

"I don't have any words for this..."

Other than I hope her death wasn't in vain and these assholes are deposed and sent to where they belong-hell.

Feel free to copy and paste a link for reference.

The news is reporting that Tweet and Facebook are closed down in Iran--so any information getting out would be newsworthy.

"I don't have any words for this..."

I think the words would be courage, revolution, resistance, freedom, and self-governance.

This brave young woman was willing to give her life for the greater good of the Iranian people.
In other words she put her Country first.

I wish more R's on this thread and across the Country were able to grasp that simple concept.

And the inane bleatings of Afkabibble, typed out feverishly, by shaking sweaty fingers on his socialist supplied computers only add to the general madness that has become the Republican Party.

Carry on Party of No! You're doing a heckuva job.

LOL!

The folks in Iran are completely irate since the country next to them--Iraq--actually does have free elections and democracy.

Mousavi is not perfect--but at least he condemned those who denied the Holocost. He might be someone the world could work with better--until the next election.

As a general rule I try not to take any of the rantings by BL2 seriously. But this time he is so far wrong that it bears comment. The WORST thing President Obama could do is starting making policy pronouncement about Iran designed to influence the internal situation. That would play so completely into the hands of Khameini et al as to almost be worthy of Stupid Foreign Policy move of the year award, a la GWBs axis of evil speech. President Obama is handling this perfectly. Monitor the situation, express concern, and keep our hands out of it. Don't give the masses any reasons to rally around their hatred of the Great Satan.

He might be someone the world could work with better--until the next election.

Wow, Murph. I do believe this is the first time I have ever agreed with you.

Just goes to show,
Ya don't ever know.

So it's ok for Iran to meddle with Iraq--but Obama can't condemn the human right violations of Iran?

www.drudge.com

#18: Agreed, we need to stay the hell out of it and let them work it out. To do otherwise is risking to further exacerbate anti-American hatred and violence.

Afkabibble is of course wrong....again...or should I say as usual?

according to Paul Craig Roberts, Reagan's Assistant Secretary of the Treasury, Moussavi's campaign enjoyed a $400 million CIA infusion.

The SUPREME LEADER "Hitler" of the "Great Religion of Peace"

Want's everyone to shut up and stop or he will kill them

Don't we just love Islam?

Fcuking moonbats!!

Murph,

Looks like Mousavi won't live to the next election...and he is fully aware of that fact.

Not to be provocative, but the jury is still out on the final results of these elections. I'm not saying that there wasns't any votefucking going on or that the gov't violence is justified, but polls on the way in had pajamaman in the lead. Add to that cia involvment and you've got, well, pretty much what's going on now.

Actually, in a way PV, the street protests are basically saying they don't care who won. People are sick and tired of the mullahs telling sophisticated educated Iranians how to live their lives.

If they can control the vote--they can control the polls.

TEh utter stupidity of people like BL2 is mind boggling. 1,000,000 Iraqis are now dead due to the unnecessary invasion and this asshole thinks the Iranians want us to do the same thing to them.
Obama makes a speech several weeks ago which reassured Iranians that the US had no intention of DESTROYING THEIR COUNTRY LIKE WE DID IRAQ and just a short time later the people are in the streets standing up to their leaders BECAUSE they don't fear a threat from outside. If Obama stuck his nose where it does not belong it would fuel the government of Iran's claim that the protests are instigated from abroad and undermine their credibility with average Iranian.
"Bomb, bomb, bomb, let's bomb Iran" John McCain should now STFU now that it is so obvious that exactly the opposite of that approach is what is empowering Iranians to stand up to the Ayatollahs and Ahmadinijad. Henry Fucking Kissinger even says Obama is handling this EXACTLY right and he, I believe now, was a McCain supporter.
Thank God the IDIOTS ARE OUT OF POWER and real foreign policy can again be conducted by the US.

Danni: #28: Bravo.

If the protestors win Barry will be left staring into space with his tiny cock in his hand.

Another thing we as bloggers can do is search for people trying to get the word out, and be an outlet for them.

Anyone can post a well written article to places lke OpEdNews.com

With the internet we can help them get the word out.

Ex. I am in contact with a Burmese Buddhist monk in Sri Lanka who emails me when he can about the military junta in Myanamar (Burma).
sometimes he has to disapear and I won't hear from him, and then he'll pop up again.

Of all Countries in the world, America should support those fighting for freedom and civil rights in any way we can.

Support the protests and the protestors! Let them know the American people support their bid for freedom.

If the protestors win Barry will be left staring into space with his tiny cock in his hand.

It's OK Thom. You're among friends here. You can do it. The first step is to just admit it to yourself and your good buddies here at DR.

We're rooting for ya buddy!

The latest word from the WH is that Barry has changed policy on Iran from thumb twiddling in the Rose Garden to triangulating in the Oval Office in case the revolutionaries win. Clinton has been called in and Jimmy Carter sent back to Peanutville.

on May 16, 2007, Bush administration neocon warmonger John Bolton told the Telegraph that a US military attack on Iran would "be a last option' after economic sanctions and attempts to foment a popular revolution had failed."

On June 29, 2008, Seymour Hersh reported in the New Yorker: "Late last year, Congress agreed to a request from President Bush to fund a major escalation of covert operations against Iran, according to current and former military, intelligence, and congressional sources. These operations, for which the President sought up to four hundred million dollars, were described in a Presidential Finding signed by Bush, and are designed to destabilize the country's religious leadership."

excerpted from Paul Craig Roberts

which begs the question why did obama apologize, if he is a party to this madness?

"which begs the question why did obama apologize, if he is a party to this madness?"

Why would he have been a party to something that happened under Bush? Even if he were told at the time he had no power and would have been bound by top secret clearances not to reveal anything. That doesn't prove he went ahead with such a nutty plan or enen indicate that he did. From his speeches I would be more likely to believe he was and is actually sane as opposed to the permanent war cheerleaders. Plus, how would Seymour Hersh know? And he has been wrong before.

danni,

because its ongoing

Obama may be attempting to look clean while the CIA does their thing. Kissinger is pleased. What does that tell you?

From the Government's point of view, the worst consequence of Shrub's invasion of Iraq is the way it has strengthened Iran's hand. From the working class's point of view, its the rise in energy costs, a deliberate Bush Crime Family strategy for decades.

Obama is the President and must know much about what the CIA has been up to. It is not beyond the CIA to lie, certainly BushI pulled an act of treason against Carter.

It is very likely both Senior and Junior invaded Iraq to gain popularity at home, since they were always considered a weak target. Twice that strategy backfired, but they got the higher oil prices they strive for.

"
danni,

because its ongoing"

Excuse me but just how would you know that?
From what I have read about the CIA of late, I doubt they could cause the overthrow of a den of cub scouts. Just when in the past fifty years has the CIA been right about anything. They didn't even anticipate the fall of the Berlin Wall. They didn't protect us from Al Quaeda. They were unable to catch Al Quaeda and now you want to pretend they are competent enough to cause the trouble in Iran. That is simple American egocentricity at its worst.

I'm listening to the horror on CNN right now, it's like we are privy to the horrors of the Nazis.
I think the Iranian regime's days are numbered.
BTW, I hope the Ayatollah is exposed to the wrath of the people. Mussolini would be a good model.

I think the Iranian regime's days are numbered.

I thought so at first, but now I'm not so sure. expect to see a Tianaman Square type episode soon. That'll keep the lid on things -- at least for a while.

Murphums, pretty much all of the internets has been "officially" shut down in Iran for some time now. If I'm not mistaken, the only way Iranians are getting their tweets and other uploads through is by using their cellphones and proxies.

Anonymous Iran - News & Current Events would've been positively burning up if this last pipeline for information had been shut down for good; thankfully, it hasn't.

This link is, btw, probably the best source of information from the man-on-the-street's perspective. Take that for what you will - there are going to be unconfirmed reports, but they're also going to be a lot faster in breaking news and images you won't see elsewhere.

From live from the protests - 6/20 - part 2

Police and militia forces turned out in force early this morning to prevent crowds from gathering and marching as previously planned and announced. This led to small clashes throughout Tehran as small groups of protesters attempted to gather.

Iranian State TV reported a suicide bomber attacked the tomb of Khomenei, and has since reported that arrested demonstrators are confessing to having been trained in the U.S. There has been no definitive proof of an attack on the tomb.

Momentum grew throughout the day and the crowds began to collect in places not as heavily guarded by the police/militia, and began to turn the security forces back.

As of now, demonstrations are widespread in Tehran and in other cities around the country.

Mousavi called for a general strike if he is arrested.

UNCONFIRMED REPORTS are that Khamenei has been relocated to a military base for protection

There are unconfirmed reports of a military tank in Azadi Square (again from the thread I just posted...there are 30+ pages on that thread with replies coming in fast but it's being discussed in the last few pages of that thread (as of 10.00pm central time).

The government is also spraying capsacian on protestors from helicopters. This report is being verified by numerous sources...BBC and FNN, and probably more.

Finally, there are (unconfirmed) reports coming in that protestors are being arrested by thugs when they go to hospitals and/or foreign embassies.

IMHO the situation is looking to explode. I hope I'm wrong. "Supreme Leader" Khameni made an hour and a half long speech the other day basically saying that the students and other protesters need to accept the results, and MOAR gawd and backwards antiquated tradition.

I, for one, will not be surprised if Mousavi meets with an unfortunate "accident" if protests aren't otherwise quelled soon.

Just to partially respond to the Aflacbabbler, I think most of the world realizes that this situation could explode at any time in such a fashion as to make what's happened thus far pale in comparison.

There's plenty to criticize about Obama...PLENTY...but I think he's doing the right thing in not directly intervening (as PV pointed out, CIA might be behind Mousavi, but that's another subject entirely...).

One wonders what the response would've been stateside had Canada, Iran, Australia, etc etc etc, involved itself in the disputed Presidential election of 2000?

I, for one, can't even imagine the fever-pitch ululations of Aflac had this been the case.

Time to go for the evening...take it easy all.

"I thought so at first, but now I'm not so sure. expect to see a Tianaman Square type episode soon. That'll keep the lid on things -- at least for a while."

One big difference, the Chinese leaders were able to distract their people with tremendous economic growth, jobs, income, etc. The Ayatollahs do not have that ability, even when oil was extremely expensive the wealth did not filter down to the people, so the government does not have the ability to "buy" the people as they did (do) in China.

Is anyone else watching this and thinking, wow Americans are lucky and double wow Americans and total pussies. Something like this hasn't happened here since the civil rights movement, and I don't see it happening anytime with the current population of Starbucks sipping, self absorbed assholes that live here.

looks like some of the protesters have already beat him to martyrdom.

actually danni....isnt iran a nation that we actually send oil to.........do you know if thats right..

AND the dems are as usual in the wrong here

RR called ussr the evil empire and dems went ballistic
dems wanted nothing to do with romanian revolt I believe it was

and in both cases they were wrong when they were saying the EXACT same things today about keeping our distance..

and as one said earlier...that phone at 3AM has been ringing off the wall.....lol

heres hoping that even obama gets it right and it isnt just another tienamen square because there are people dieing for freedom there

anyone think I should send them my
DONT TREAD ON ME shirt.........

chlorine

I was thinking of something like that
I thought..wow..our system..EVEN WHEN IT GIVES US liars like obama...is the best ever.......maybe we can get it back before dems fuck it up even more..

sorry to post again so soon but I forgot

I heard something this morning as well
they were talking about the group of thugs and punks who go around beating people and all

that the 'little shit in the bad suit' was one of those people who beat and shot and all..
figures huh???

isnt iran a nation that we actually send oil to.........do you know if thats right..

Not exactly. Iran exports oil, but imports its refined products (gas, jet fuel, fuel oil, etc.) because of their inferior refining capabilities.

Also, I'm not sure if it's from us or other countries or AOTA

ah that makes sense then....
because I was reading about some guy from here in houston who was in iran doing oil work and I didnt know that we still did that
I had several students and friends who spent a lot of time there when oil companies were building shit and other things during the late 60's nd 70's...

chlorine

I was thinking of something like that
I thought..wow..our system..EVEN WHEN IT GIVES US liars like obama...is the best ever.......maybe we can get it back before dems fuck it up even more..

While I don't really care for Obama, and I think he is more hype than hope, our system gives us liars in both parties. Our problem is that we have one big party that agrees on one thing, government knows best. For all the talk that Republicans spew about small limited (constitutional) government they gave us a monster like the Department of Homeland Security and corporate welfare. The Dems will drive us deeper into debt, but W wasn't exactly a budget hawk.

Let the Iranian people fight for their freedom and democracy. Let them earn it with their own efforts rather than the sweat and blood from others.
