Don't lump me in the "other" category. You should have a separate category for those who legitimately have REGISTERED with their County Recorder on the voter rolls as an "independent" (which, by the way, is NOT to be confused with the "Independent Party").

And the cowards who put down "decline to state" on their voter registration form should not be allowed to count as a legitimate registered "independent" if they didn't write it down.

For the purposes of this exercise I identified myself as a Democrat and a Liberal.

Democrat only because I declared myself Democrat to take part in my state's caucus, so I could vote against Hillary.

Liberal because I'm probably more liberal than any of the other choices. However "liberal" has pretty much lost its meaning. A better term to describe how I think would probably be "progressive" or "populist" or maybe even "green."

I'll enter those fields, but I just want to note a simple caveat (as have others): I find the labels a bit confining. But it's like a public opinion poll, you go with what's on offer.

I have been reading up on this issue of identity and all of that and it seems that there are really few 'real' liberals here in the classic sense of the term because a 'real' liberal is much more willing to hear an opposing view
what we get here much of the time are totalitarians who arent interested in any notions of that sort.

I think RCADE has been more than generous since he never pretended the DR was more than he made it out to be -- a leftleaning blog. But often the subject matter does go down the middle and I'm happy about that as I'm neither far right nor far left so I find it a comfortable medium here.

In fact, lately, there are so many new names on DR I don't know 1/3rd of the people anymore and it seems like more Republicans have taken over DR than those from the left.

Be grateful, Bushlovers, you are even allowed to post on here. After 8 years of the disaster known as the Bush Administration and what they have done to this country, you're lucky you're allowed to even post on here.

I am a proud liberal and proud to join the ranks of the proud liberals who have brought virtually all advancements in economic prosperity and social equality. To me, the can be no excuse for being a conservative until we have full social equality and economic opportunity for all. In truth, conservatism serves one main purpose, to preserve the status quo for those who benefit from it or think they benefit from it. I can't think of a single example of when freedom increased from conservative ideas. I can't think of one example when the economic benefits of our economy went to the working class due to conservative principles.
I understand rich people being conservative, I can even understand religious zealots being conservative, I do not understand working class folks who are conservative, I believe that they are simply being sold a bill of goods by slick salesmen who are paid handsomely by the wealthy to convince them to oppose that which benefits themselves.
Quite simply, I think a working class person has to be either gullible or crazy to be a conservative.

Some good posts here, but I still don't know how "liberal" the ReTort really is. A few reasonably progressive posters, but I think there's more quantity (surely NOT quality) from the rigid right.

Never really trusted those internet tests. They invariably force the person into some category - plus they do not accept the concept of "independent". I score libertarian on every test I've taken - because I am, re my personal views. But I would _never_, emphatically _never_, vote for a libertarian as president or for a libertarian party. I am a steadfast and unabashed "independent". Mostly "moderate" as well!

Wow - fuckin' wow! Unfortunetly, probably only 10 have sensible and well formulated views which translate into sensible and well formulated posts. (how's that for "elitism"!) Many of the internet tests like the Nolan test are designed precisely to do that, make someone think they're a libertarian. Libertarians hate the political compass test because it has more than just the spectrum of statist vs non-statist that they try to plug everybody into.
