My first memory of Cronkite, or of paying much attention to news in general was when I came home from school for lunch on Nov. 22, 1963.

Yeah, like that didn't score you a ladyboy or three.

Look at Vernon quick with the hate.

Attaboy Vern.

he used to be the ONLY news at our house. and that's the way it was...

I thought he was already dead so I suppose that means this is good news to me: he is still alive.

Ah Vermin!

Quoting "scripture" one day, and Spewing hate the next.

I'm guessing the hate spewing Verm is the real Verm.

JerryFuckMeInTheAss:

You have a real fixation on ladyboys, don't you?

Every thread you have to drag out your vile obsession. I guess dressing up your brother as Barbie (and shoving a cucumber up your ass) just doesn't cut it any more?

And along comes Vermin to prove me right!

Hell Vermy, I flagged your rant as funny!

Squirmin' Vermin must be off the little blue pills. He seems cranky today.

Vermin already had 2 dumps and figured he got another earlier this AM, so he's just making hay while the sun is still shining.

Little does he know that Rogers just implemented a new policy extending the exile by a week for each additional dump over 3.

And here comes Let-U-Spray with ABSOLUTEY NOTHING to say except that he's lonely, pathetic and desperate for a ride on the Vernon train.

That's why this assclown with the IQ of a bar of soap resorts to the 'medication' post.

Actually, that would require a misunderstanding of history. In which case, it's the perfect position for you to take. Vermin, you're not only clueless; you're hopelessly clueless.

Indeed but why all the anger from Vernon?

Actually, Cronkite DID serve General Giap and the communists pretty well.

"Generally, the "referees of history" have not rendered the TET offensive a military draw. The VC/NVA suffered unexpectedly high casualties, from which it took years to recover. In particular, the ranks of the Viet Cong were decimated."

www.americanthinker.com

I don't think anyone's suggested the 1968 Tet Offensive was a "military draw." (If so, well, they're mistaken.) The offensive was a tactical disaster for the NVA and VC. But I also don't think there's anyone who's looked at the events seriously and, after accounting for their own prejudices, seen anything but a strategic victory for the NVA and VC. Tet ripped apart the curtain of government lies -- "end of the tunnel" proclamations and the like -- and exposed the Vietnam War for what it really was: an endless journey down the rabbit hole that led nowhere. To say "Conkite DID serve General Giap and the communists pretty well" doesn't, I think, really get to the central reality of Tet: The press may've reported Tet -- with the early Communist victories and ultimate Communist defeats -- but it was the government and people like Westmoreland who laid the groundwork through their prevarication and unwarranted optimism for the crushing sense of hopelessness that followed in the offensive's wake. (Remember, the enemy was supposed to be on the ropes; only a few more troops needed to be added to the demon's brew; there was light at the end of the tunnel --- and, as one wag at the time put it, [I'm paraphrasing], "Yes, there was light at the end of the tunnel; it was an express train, heading straight for us.") That was not Cronkite's fault. He was merely the messenger.

"...but it was the government and people like Westmoreland who laid the groundwork through their prevarication and unwarranted optimism for the crushing sense of hopelessness that followed in the offensive's wake."

Indeed...and McNamara, let's not forget THAT sorry POS. THIS is the part for which I don't forgive Cronkite.

"At the time, Cronkite's pronouncement added credibility and importance to all the network anchors. His was a stunning exercise of media power. But, in the perspective of history, the outcome of his pronouncement is not universally recognized as having been positive. He overtly and figuratively stepped out from behind the microphone to add his personal commentary to the news. We had not seen this before. By doing so, Cronkite issued an implicit license to his journalistic colleagues to interject personal opinions into their factual reporting of the news."

I"ndeed...and McNamara, let's not forget THAT sorry POS."

No, let's not forget him. Y'know, Jest, the first time I saw The Wall on the Mall in D.C., it was aorund the mid-1990s, winter, hardly anybody around, and I walked along wondering, "Jeez, where's The Wall?" And then, suddenly, there it was. I approached, but not quickly, kind of holding back, as all sorts of emotions swirled around me. When things calmed down a bit, I remember thinking it was too bad LBJ wasn't around but that McNamara was still available. And I thought then and believe now that that sonofabitch should be condemned to spend eternity trudging up and down The Wall, water bucket in hand, scrubbing it down every day, all day and all night, 24/7 with the smallest toothbrush available.

"And I thought then and believe now that that sonofabitch should be condemned to spend eternity trudging up and down The Wall, water bucket in hand, scrubbing it down every day, all day and all night, 24/7 with the smallest toothbrush available."

....without an opportunity to even go pee.

Did I ever tell you about serving on the staff of Adm. Eddie Outlaw who had the front page of the San Francisco paper framed on his wall in Norfolk, VA? It was in 1967,'68,'69. The headline read:
"McNamara Fires Outlaw." Outlaw was Commander Carrier Division One when the raids first started on North Vietnam. He ignored the targets picked for him from the Pentagon and struck those he selected from the most recent intel.

Seriously? What did Outlaw go after that they didn't want him to go after? Must've been a tough s.o.b.

"Seriously? What did Outlaw go after that they didn't want him to go after? Must've been a tough s.o.b."

He was. He was a highly decorated ace from WWII. I admired him a lot. He basically told McNamara and the desk-bound dudes in the Pentagon to take care of the paper work and HE would fight the war. He was hitting targets based on real-time info instead of waiting for the Pentagon data. They would send a primary and secondary target every day and he mostly ignored them. When they would ask him why he didn't hit their targets, he would reply, "Cloud cover." It finally came to a head and he was reassigned to Norfolk as Commander Hunter Killer Force, Atlantic where I joined his staff. He never did get another star. I went back to the Tonkin Gulf in '69 with the USS Kearsarge, another carrier.

"with the USS Kearsarge"

Certainly a proud name in the history of the USN.

"Certainly a proud name in the history of the USN."

Yes, it is. We left the Gulf in late '69 before our scheduled end of deployment and went back to Long Beach for decommission. There is another Kearsarge now but it's an amphibious assault ship (helo's,) not an attack carrier.

he was important in the history of broadcast news but read books about that era and you will find that he was pretty straightforward about being in charge as much as a 'reader' could
and it seems that he wasnt a big fan of RATHER either........

but he was there for some of the most tumoltuous times in our country

Vietnam was wrong, Vermin.

Cronkite was right to dislike the waste that that war represented.

You probably think that that "war" was lost due to American media and anti-war protestors.

Cos yer an idiot.

Be Well.

/"Ho Chi Minh", btw.

On Topic?

Walter Cronkite was a voice of sanity and empathy who to this day represents a high standard in broadcasting/journalistic integrity.

Mister, we could use a man like Unka Walter again.

Get Well Soon, Walter.

Be Well.

the main man when America stood for decent principles.

Cronkite read the news to millions and sucked up to the Hollywood elite.

WOW - very impressive! No wonder he's a darling of the left.

NastyPussy don't like Unka Walt?

Damn, someone oughta call up the Guiness people and see wot the record is for being wrong the most times in a row.

Think we got a new record here.

Be Well.

I'll remember the man mostly for his reporting of the NASA missions, especially Apollo 11. You could hear in his voice the historical importance of the event.

Now try to see Bill O'Rielly, Limbaugh or Hannity behind that desk. Gets horrific quickly, doesn't it?

and you know little history in particular the nixon years. Im not saying other things were involved but to media had a large part to do with it.
I remember the day when chronkite first started reporting the war as lost. it did make a difference probably more because of his influence at that time. it was like none today.......

so you are both right...you know spud...like always you are HALF ASSED......oh...OHHHHHHH another good one

also...latest report is that he his death has never been 'immenent"...

He always did have a sort of gravely voice...

... and I suppose someone who can't even spell 'Ho Chi Minh' completely understands the subject.
Pinhead.

Cronkite to Rather to Couric. CBS news has had quite a spectacular downwards spiral of "talent" since Uncle Walter. Who's next Paris Hilton? Nah that'd be an improvement.

i'm sorry to hear this. though i thought he was already dead. for a newshound, he did a fine job of keeping out of it for the last 10 years.

#50 - He's sure doing better than former Presidents in this regard!
