President Obama faces new concerns among the public about the budget deficit and government intervention in the economy as he works to enact ambitious health and energy legislation, a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll finds. "The public is really moving from evaluating him as a charismatic and charming leader to his specific handling of the challenges facing the country," said pollster Peter D. Hart. Obama and his allies "are going to have to navigate in pretty choppy waters."

Admin's note: Participants in the discussion of this weblog entry should note the site's moderation policy.

A solid majority -- 58% -- said that the president and Congress should focus on keeping the budget deficit down, even if takes longer for the economy to recover.

Laura Zamora, 40, of Orange, Calif., voted for Mr. Obama but says she is frustrated by the economy and finds her support for the president waning. She says she's facing a possible layoff as a local government worker in California.

"He's bailing out the private sector. He's putting all kinds of money into the private sector," says Mrs. Zamora. "The money should be going to social programs, not to bailing out banks and GM. It should go to people who are unemployed."

I think this is very understandable, and it is why I say that if employment numbers turn around by this time next year, Obama's numbers will skyrocket.

And when they don't, Barry's goose is cooked. Except in the tiny terrariums of Sarvisland and Rogueworld, where Obama can do no wrong, everything bad is some one else's fault, and cute puppies crap beautiful rainbows that turtle doves nest in.

OBAMAGOD already has this whole thing figured out the deficit is no big deal as timmy will just print up all the extra money needed, in the mean time liberals still think Bush is President...

"The public is really moving from evaluating him as a charismatic and charming leader to his specific handling of the challenges facing the country," said pollster Peter D.
About time.

About 2/3 are against the war in Iraq, the fucking bailout while being in favor of public sector option for manging health care.

At the end of the day, who will Washington listen to? The people planning the demise of our stnadard of living in order to send their own into the stratosphere, of course. Just like Rome and Medieval Europe.

""The public is really moving from evaluating him as a charismatic and charming leader to his specific handling of the challenges facing the country," said pollster Peter D."

He is screwed

If flowering bullshit were music, he would be a brass band. Some are slow to catch on but others have figured him out.

My favorite is "pay-go". He keeps saying he wants it but his actions don't go along with his lips.

Obama's not "screwed." His numbers may dip but they'll just fall in line with what he deserves based on an assessment of his actions, as opposed to the American Idol style crap we've seen since his campaign started (still hasn't finished).

Maybe, just maybe I'll stop having to see Michelle's ugly mug every time I check out at the grocery store.

Mr. Obama's overall job approval and personal ratings have slipped, particularly among independent voters. His job approval rating now stands at 56%, down from 61% in April. Among independents, it dropped from nearly two-to-one approval to closely divided.
* * *

A big move in a month and a half. To lose 25% of your support among indy's? Not good.
Maybe the muddled moderate middle is a little more deficit-spending conscious than the libbies thought.

"but they'll just fall in line with what he deserves based on an assessment of his actions"

Exactly, and when he is judged on his actual performance he is screwed. As far as i can tell his supporters are just holding on to the "teen crush" that won him the election. The only support he will have in a few years are the people that refuse to see beyond the letter next to his name.

Obama has got a tough balancing act here.

If the economy improves and he gets people back into their jobs and they start getting their health benefits back....will he still have the same momentum for a health care reform package?

unemployment numbers are driving these articles about a national health care plan just like $4 gas drove the hoopla about man-made global warming. When gas went back to $2 then it fizzles out.

Personally, I think obama is giving 100% lip service to the notion of some sort of a public option for health care. He isn't going to do it.

..or he may do an about turn on underwriting the worst aspects of our economy. Otherwise he's one term for sure.

Personally, I think obama is giving 100% lip service to the notion of some sort of a public option for health care. He isn't going to do it.

And when he does it, you will be sniping at him for saving poor American lives won't you. Just checking.

well the boob has weighed in so it is a lock that I'm right.

nothing this jackass has every wanted or wished for ever happens.

Personally, I think obama is giving 100% lip service to the notion of some sort of a public option for health care. He isn't going to do it.

I agree. I am sure he loved Daschelle, Baker, and Dole all coming out and saying "no" on the public option. It gives him an out. Of course, there is no way the legislative branch will ever agree on anything, so the thought of national health care is a long way off.

My personal idea for a national health plan would be every kid under the age of 18 is covered for everything, no questions asked. Every old fart is covered as well. For those in between, if you are out of a job and need emergency care then you should be able to apply for a federal grant to cover some or all of the expense.

Finally, if you want to keep costs low, start regulating insurance companies rather than taking money from their lobbyist; regulate wasteful spending by hospitals; and cap med/mal suits.

My name is Taxman and I would appreciate your support in 2010.

; )

I'm just saying that he has a tough deal here. He has to face the AMA and the insurance industry on this who will throw all they have at him and congress (unless they see something in this for themselves)

Of course there is public support for a public health option. Many people are unemployed (not obama's fault) and most of them voted for him....he promised them he would do something about this. What do you expect people to say in a poll like this right now?

good post taxman. if Obama takes this too far and it fails then he will have to blame congress (which is controlled by his own party) so he is between a rock and a hard place.

It’s a joke what he is doing and the state run press keep blowing smoke up the butts for those that read papers like the New York Times and get their news from the likes of NBC and MSNBC. Tax, Tax, Tax Now he wants to tax my company provided cell phone.

Some live pay check to pay check and he is going to tax their company supplied health care.

I should be looking for companies to purchase and improve and hire people so he can take my investment and give it to someone who is sitting on the ass at home eating
bon-bons… I’ll move every business I have off shore – screw him. But hell he is talking about taxing that off shore business also.

How did your wanting and wishing for that big dick up your ass go?

you should get back to your 9-11 threads. you can't debate a real issue.

Oh wait, nobody will talk to you over there on your batshit crazy theories.

Eberly

You start a moronic attack, and when you get your ass handed to you, suddenly you want to talk issues. If you can't handle a flame war--don't start one you pussy.

you can't debate a real issue.

I disagree. Boob makes a compelling case for car antennas as the superior weapon to firearms.

Some live pay check to pay check and he is going to tax their company supplied health care.

It will never happen. They will do away with the public option before they start taxing your beneftis.

My personal idea for a national health plan would be every kid under the age of 18 is covered for everything, no questions asked. Every old fart is covered as well. A plan like that might actually work and and would enjoy a lot of support by folks who don't support the ideas we are hearing right now. But rather than run with a plan like this we hear about a larger plan that scares the shit out of many people.

suddenly you want to talk issues.

yeah, with people who posses the ability to do that.

you don't. It isn't my fault you believe the shit you believe. But you do and that can't be ignored when you attempt to discuss anything.

Some live pay check to pay check and he is going to tax their company supplied health care.

Ther is no such thing as company supplied health benefits. Every employees pays for their own healkth benefits. If an employees isn't making enough profit that the company needs for, raw materials, taxes, health care, andprofits, that employee is gone.

If Obama comes up with a good health care plan, then the companies will be relieved of that expense, and employees have every right to demand a raise.

Eberly

You believe a smoky oxygen starved fire can melt steel--and call me stupid.

I guess it is my mistake for talking to your dumb ass. I have a suggestion---would you like me to ignore you? I have a nice list to make everyones life easier---people I no longer acknowledge. So far the list includes goatman, kanrei, gimme a scotch, grendel, and Iraqibukkake. There is plenty of room left for you. All you have to do is ask. You seem to only have insults to offer anyway, and even they are stolen material.

Live or Die

What are you talking about? LINK?? Let me make the same offer to you as I did to Eberly. I am making a list of people I consider a waste of time---and usually the feeling is mutual. I believe if we keep to this list---all our lives will be much easier.

Would you like to be the latest addition? It doesn't take much effort to be added--just let me know. I thnk you'll enjoy life much more.

Nothing more than the usual hysterics of the right who have wanted the President of the United States to fail since day one because he didn't have an 'R' after his name and more importantly, because he's a black man.

There's nothing that enrages a white conservative more than a black man who is more successful than they are.

Hate to bust another rightwing bubble, but Obama's numbers haven't moved more than a couple of points since March.

www.realclearpolitics.com

But Tax hit in on the first post. Obama's going to be judged on the economy and how individuals see themselves in it.

And as far as how people see the country, its 50-50. Better than Bush's 90-10 going the wrong way. going:http:// www.realclearpolitics.com/ epolls/other/ direction_of_country-902.html

No way boob, I love our little chats.

Obama was never given a chance by the majority of those who voted for McCain and others. Republicans consistantly stand for party over country. Democrats are much more likely to support a republican President than vice versa. Bush had a 92% favorability rating--that's a lot of dem support. If Obama had been President on 911, few republicans would have supported him---they would have been howling that the attack wouldn't have occured if he had paid attention to the warnings by various intel sources. Instead they support the guy who ignored all warnings and was on "vacation" for most of his Presidency.

No way boob, I love our little chats.

Then start bringing some brains to the table or I'll add you myself.

"Then start bringing some brains to the table"

Well tell him where you got yours. I mean with the defective one you got you would think he could drop your name and get a huge discount.

"But rather than run with a plan like this we hear about a larger plan that scares the shit out of many people."

This is in line with my own criticism of the Obama administration. My own assessment at this point is that too much emphasis is going to big schemes like bank and auto-industry bailouts, plus the stimulus package. I'd rather see more attention go to small-scale, doable stuff that has more impact on Joe Average. Stuff like a job-loss prevention program, more funding for public-sector service personnel like police and fire (economically depressed neighborhoods need more of these services, not less) and more requirements that banks look at alternatives to foreclosure and a requirement that they lend to credit-worthy consumers.

None of these things (except an increase in public-sector service jobs) would cost very much, but they - and other small-scale moves like them - would have an impact on Main Street. What Obama has done is to emphasize big-tent projects that benefit the top of the food chain and hope that their benefits will trickle down to the rest of us, which is sort of Reaganesque at best, and foolhardy at worst, considering the entrenched culture of greed and entitlement seen at that level of American society. Some of the things that happened with TARP funds should have gotten bankers imprisoned.

Obama has a long way to go before he impresses me with his accomplishments. Not being John McCain isn't good enough any more.

"Not being John McCain isn't good enough any more. "

But unless there is a side to him that no one in the world but obama knows about that is all he has going for him.

Mtw

Awesome post. Best I have read from anybody in quite a while.

Boob, never never never never leave this site.

You won't leave. You love the abuse

Eberly

You failed to answer the question. I'll answer it for you.

Do what u have to do boob.

60% that's about how much of the population gets a government check,so his numbers will stay consistent unless that % goes up.

SEMTEX111

How much of the population received a check under Bush? Why didn't his numbers stay consistent?

"About 2/3 are against the war in Iraq, the fucking bailout while being in favor of public sector option for manging health care."

At the time during the runup to the war 70% of Americans were for it, at the time of the bailout, Americans were for it.....

We want what we don't have, and then when we get it, we don't like it.

California is forshadowing the future...

I have a suggestion---would you like me to ignore you? I have a nice list to make everyones life easier---people I no longer acknowledge. So far the list includes goatman, kanrei, gimme a scotch, grendel, and Iraqibukkake.

hmmm. What do these people have in common when conversing with da bOoB? They offer facts and links to back them up and ask that bOoB do the same. When da boOb doesn't, these people hold his feet to the fire.

No wonder he ignores us. LOL

What is even funnier is that da bOoB acts like it is a horrible thing to be ignored by him! Too funny. Get over yourself, bOoB. Your attention is not important to anyone.

At the time during the runup to the war 70% of Americans were for it, at the time of the bailout, Americans were for it..."

Well yeah after a blitz of state propaganda which is now known to have been nothing but lies.

There's nothing that enrages a white conservative more than a black man who is more successful than they are.

Personally, I find idiots who paint with a broad brush much more irritating than a successful man.

60% that's about how much of the population gets a government check,so his numbers will stay consistent unless that % goes up.

....another 'Rush factoid' devoid of any real 'fact' or reality.

Dont worry - the President and First Lady will go on another date - maybe to Miami - and the entire country will go "ooo" and "ahhh" and forget about their problems. Then Michelle Obama will appear on another magazine cover about how stylish she is - and everyone will go "ooooh" and "aaaahhhh" - and then the ratings will go up.

But who cares about ratings anyway. Bush had low ratings and look what happened. Ratings matter towards the end of the presidency when everyone is worried about legacy.

Congress has an abysmal approval rating and look how many of those crooks get re-elected. Members of Congress dont have legacy issues, so they could care less about what the public thinks. Approval ratings are for legacies!

Its not "my"congressman that's the problem,he brings home the bacon. It's "your"congressman that's destroying the country

Bruce - quite possible. I still havent seen the bacon from my Rep. I have voted against my Congressman for the last four elections and he keeps winning. I think Congress needs an enima and starts over ....

thank you for bringing up yet another lie from the fucking liar

on the SAME day that he gave us this line of bullshit, dems in congress began the CASH FOR CLUNKERS program...paid for with..

BORROWED MONEY......

fuckin liar

I would think that unless Mr. Persident makes a speech in regard to North Korea containing the words Realy Big Bomb, Prior to the July 4th launch toward Hawiee, his polls will be below bush.

Wait till you get your electric and heating bills in January 2010.... Lowest polls in history predicted there...

you may be right bash...........

and IF health care goes through like the dems are wanting and we see that there really WILL Be rationing and NO COMPETITION

well I may try and bring all of us here who have said that would happen and all at once we would typed

WE TOLD YOU SO

it would be the "MOTHER" of all 'told you so's"

The leftists wouldn't acknowledge it though.... They would still be bashing and blaming it on bush... and before anyone types I know how to spell Hawaii

They don't get it.

Between the health care and the bail out it looks like we are doomed to 60% tax rates for the next 50 years.

Thanks to all the DREAMERS who fell for the word CHANGE!

I just wish we could slap them while we screamed TOLD YOU SO into their ears!

The simple minded bastards.....

I felt the same way through 8 years of Bush. You seem to want more Bush. This should make you feel at home.

4 More Years of Bush

Polls don't matter at this point. In October 2010 if the economy still stinks or is stalled, then the Democrats will take a beating. Still might be able to blame Bush but if 2012 rolls around and it is still stalled then Obama will be in trouble. My guess is that Obama wants to get his agenda through now, sacrafice some Democrats in 2010 and get the economy going before the 2012 election.

He really is talking about more gov't spending, greater regulation on the private sector, gov't intervention in some private companies and some version of national health care. I just don't see how this will increase activity in the private sector before the 2010 election.

and get the economy going before the 2012 election.

Not going to happen if we are all paying 1000 a month for heat and 600 a month for electric and 60% taxes

He doesn't have that long. If things don't appear to be getting better by November 2010, you are going to see the birth of an obstructionist Congress that will all but guarantee an Obama loss in 2012.

Great we will just get another zionist idiot in power. More Tax breaks for the rich and maybe another war for Israel.

Why is it that people here think that rich people should pay a higher tax rate then the middle class... We all got the same percentages on the tax break did we not?

I have not seen anything indicating that the rich got a bigger break percentage wise than we did...

If we would just go to the flat sales tax this entire issue would be moot.

I wasn't aware of the fact that we went to war for Israel....

I thought we were going to war over getting attacked on 9/11 in Afghanistan and to remove Saddam after many UN resolutions failed to bring him under control...

The leftists here are sooooooooooo concerned about waterboarding terrorists... But thind we should have minded our own business and let saddam kill as many sheite women and children as he liked...

Part time... selective..... politically motivated..... caring people.... I guess.

You cry before you're hurt--just like a 6 year old getting a shot from the doctor. You invent a fictitious future, then frighten yourself with the image. Calm down, take a nap.

OK I'M a cry baby I guess

Three trillion dollar budget

Government health Care

Cap and trade

Who is going to pay for that?

We are

Not to mention that N Korea is planning to launch toward Hawaii and out supreme Change Artist has yet to utter a single word there Buffalo Bob....

From the WSJ/NBC poll:

Which ONE of the following groups do you feel is most responsible for the federal budget deficit?

The Bush administration 46%

The Obama administration 6%

Bashthis

I doubt NK is that whacky, and I doubt you know what Obama is doing about it. Again, you seem to mking up future, and being frightened by it. The money in the bail out wasn't free---it is to be paid back. Very much like the Saving and Loan crisis of the 80's.

More and more eyes are opening to Obama's lies and bullshit. His healthcare proposal will flat as opposition even in his own party grows. The whole bottom will fall out when he pushes to legalize illegal immigrants (and he has just set that as a priority). Placing 12-20 million newly legalized workers into a tight job market will NOT go over well on either side of the aisle. It will be political suicide.

Obama approval numbers in the 40's by end of summer.

I doubt NK is that whacky...

You're not in any position to be judging the sanity of anything, or anyone. You are the bat-shit craziest poster, out of a large pool of bat-shit crazy posters.

What was the immature, teasing, whining little phrase that the left assclowns spewed back in G.H.W.Bush's day? Oh yeah, uh, ah eh ee, I oh yuwah.. duh.. it ...is. dah..e..con..om..eee .... uh,ah stoo..ped!

And these whackos think he is a better president than G.W., talk about very low standards, obama is a worthless, clueless clown, the backlash is coming.

It is not easy to make a good living-to be wealthy. If it were everyone would do it. Most well to do are workaholics (exceptions only prove the rule). So the desire of Obama and his socialist co-hordes to play the class-warfare card will fail miserably. Soaking the reach is at best a 46% solution for the dems.

In reference to "working families" Obama is trying to placate "the poor" in an attempt to separate them from the so-called "rich" as somehow they are not working and owe to the poor-working class. The only non-working families I know of are on the government dough and they are supposed to be the recipients of all these new wealth redistribution-the new lumpen proletariat. Halleluiah!

Hey, I like Obama on a personal level, and I'm glad that we elected a black president.. I think he's a great example of a husband and father.. someone from modest means that's done well. That's terrific.

But I don't support most of his policies, and I find the fawning over him by the majority of the press ridiculous...

I'm afraid he's playing out of his league, and I firmly hold to the belief that he's going to be a one termer as a result.. Jimmy Carter re-visited...

I (an Obama voter) am very encouraged by his Middle East initiatives. That is pure genius and long overdue.
Obama, please do not go for Volker economics! Please??? I suffered under Carter with this nonsense. We lost the White House for TWELVE-F*CKING-YEARS after that. Carter started many good things Reagan got credit for and still lost because of Volker economics.
Thank you.

Its only a matter of time before the O.J. moment.
Omama will do something more bizzare than spend all our money. He was made to look good and sound good but smooth talk sometimes hides a wicked heart. The media can make anyone look and sound good if they want. Funny how peole don't recognize the difference between how the media bashed and worked overtime to make Bush look like a fool. Look at the 2006 economic numbers: 4.7 unemployment, no inflation, low interest rates. Looked pretty good untill DNC took control of congress and stopped us from drilling for oil and triggered the Fanny Mae melt-down for the 2008 election.

Omammy won't be satisfied until all Americans are living in a hut, wearing rags and begging in the streets for a government hand-out. Then he will have been a successful Marxist. But we will all be equal just like in Cuba, North Korea, Red China, Soviet Union, etc. Once the communist devour a nation and have nothing left but a dead carcus, they thirst for fresh meat like a beast looking for its next meal steadily stalking the prize of their dreams.... the wealthiest and richest nation on earth. Enough blood for them to suck on for years and years!

"Looked pretty good untill DNC took control of congress and stopped us from drilling for oil..."

Had they begun drilling for oil, as you wished, they would have started at $4 a gallon and shut down before it hit $1.75 a gallon. Had the DNC approved it, as you wished, you'd be excoriating them for losing money on the deal.

"... and triggered the Fanny Mae melt-down for the 2008 election."

Too funny. Republicans had full control for 6 years, and wrote banking bill after banking bill. Meanwhile, Dems got nothing passed in the banking area after taking over in '06, thanks to record Republican filibusters and the threat of veto. So we have been operating under Republican rules for most of the last decade, until some very recent minor changes.

The FM meltdown was based on the dumbest of premises: government should back (read:pay for) rank stupidity. I knew 125% LTVs were dangerous. I'll bet you did, too. I knew interest-only reset loans were time bombs. So did you. FM backed these and other instruments they warn against in Risk Management. Put another way, lenders have been able to loan to the unworthy for many, many years. Until recently, they knew better.

"Looked pretty good untill DNC took control of congress and stopped us from drilling for oil..."

Congress does not dictate where or when the oil rig I am posting from right now operates. It is our client -- currently BP -- who tells us when to 'stop'. And they will until their contract is up, then it will be another oil company who will tell us when to drill. The oil companies make their drilling decisions based on the marketplace.

It is nonesense to think that Congress is pushing my rig around the GoM like a chess piece.

Carter started many good things Reagan got credit for and still lost because of Volker economics.
Thank you.

Reagan kept Volker on until 1987. The credit Reagan got for the economy was because of Volker--and Volker was first appointed by Carter. Carter nd Carter plans and appointments got us out of the inflation from Viet Nam--not Reagan.

this is a good and well ententioned post I believe, but not versed in enough reality
JUST AS DEMOCRATS SAID IN DEBATES

we cant afford ON THE JOB training in this office and thats EXACTLY what we are getting.
I agree that he is a good role model for black children but there are other, less expensive for the country in ways in addition to taxes, that he could have been a role model.

The Presidents job is always OJT. Dumbass.
