"The Obama policy of extending an open hand to Iran is working and ought not be abandoned because of the grim events in Tehran. ... Obama, with his outstretched hand, his message to Iran on its national day, his admission that the United States had a hand in the 1953 coup in Tehran, his assurances that we recognize Iran's right to nuclear power, succeeded. He stripped the ayatollah and Ahmadinejad of their clinching argument that America is out to destroy Iran and they are indispensable to Iran's defense." -- Pat Buchanan

"Three Cheers for Obama on Iran"

One for each day he was silent.

Take your whine up with Buchanan.

Neocons, House GOPers Demand Obama Take Moussavi's Side: President's Hawkish Critics Say U.S. Should Be Aligned With Reformists in Iran

Yeeeeeeeeee-HAW! The show trial would be quite something! And then all the executions!
~Neo "The Don't Call Us 'Cons' for Nothing" Cons

Time to kick Buchanan out of the GOP.

A Bushie Backs Obama

And not just any Bushie, the former president's point-man on the country, Nicholas Burns:

"President Ahmadinejad would like nothing better than to see a very aggressive series of statements by the United States that would try to put the U.S. in the center of this," Burns said. "And I think President Obama is avoiding that quite rightly."

"This is not a dispute for the U.S. to be the center of," Burns said at another point. "It's up to Iranians to decide who Iran's future leaders will be. He said he respects Iran's sovereignty. I think it was important to do that."

Doc,

I agree with Obama's silence, its touch and go. People are making political hay out of the situation. But Nutjob won, and Obama shouldn't take too long to congratulate him.

Its too early to proclaim "open hand" works. Nutjob won the same percentage as 2005.

In three years, we will know.

"Ahmadinejad won. Get over it"
They ignore the fact that Ahmadinejad's 62.6 percent of the vote in this year's election is essentially the same as the 61.69 percent he received in the final count of the 2005 presidential election, when he trounced former President Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani. The shock of the "Iran experts" over Friday's results is entirely self-generated, based on their preferred assumptions and wishful thinking.

Nice eye, Doc.

If even Pat Buchanan can follow the logic of how to handle Iran, it seems even some of the Tighties around here might be able to see thru their haze of hatred to what policy is best for the US.

In before, "Buchanan is a R.I.N.O./turncoat", etc. !!!

Oh shi-....

Wait, he's joking. Right? So, that doesn't count.

STILL in b4 "Buchanan is a RINO"!!!

It's good to see our president playing chess instead of checkers.

Okay GOP - Crown me...

"As with the other revolutionary and totalitarian regimes, from the Soviet Union of Lenin and Stalin, to the People's Republic of Mao, to the revolutionary Cuba of Fidel, America outlasts them all."

Be nice if China were inclded in that group.

Minding our own business is never a bad thing.

Attacking the Iranian government only makes it more credibile in the eyes of Iranians anyway.

Danni, I think you missed something....."People's Republic of Mao" refers to China.

"The Obama policy of extending an open hand to Iran is working and ought not be abandoned because of the grim events in Tehran."

So "the only thing they understand if force" is no longer correct? Pat is really confusing me.

Why has'nt PETA screamed about the bamster killing an innocent fly during his recent spew of lies and drivel? That fly was just trying to hear what bammy was saying. Is no one or anything safe around this evil immature, lying assclown?

#1 - Irony flag. Somebody who calls the president "bammy" and "bamster" complains of those who are "immature."

You guys actually read rightnut? Waste of electrons....

#4 - only because he was first to post, Northguy. I felt a challenge.

rightwingnut reminds me of Rob the asshole... a complete WOB.

On topic - it is amazing that Buchanan has turned out to be the voice of reason during this event in Iran. Most righties are bitching and moaning that Obama is not "doing something" to exploit this situation.

"Wait for the dust to settle" is the best I have heard from the right yet. Are we sure Pat hasn't become a Democrat?

Buchanan seriously outclassed McCain on this. McCain: "The President should speak out that this election is fraud. It is wrong. It's a deprivation of the Iranian people of their basic human rights."

Then again, some on the Right have been hoping Ahmadinejad would win the election. Maybe that's what McCain's after, too? Nothing would give Ahmadinejad the upper hand than Obama coming out and being seen as "meddling" in Iran's affairs.

If you want a link to McCain's statements, here you go.

SENATOR JOHN McCAIN: Well, we lead; we condemn the sham, corrupt election. We do what we havedone throughout the Cold War and afterwards, we speak up for the people of Tehran and Iran and all the cities all over that country who have been deprived of one of their fundamental rights. We speak out forcefully, and we make sure that the world knows that America leads and including increased funding for part of the Farda, Iranian free radio.

McCAIN: He should speak out that this is a corrupt, fraud, sham of an election. The Iranian people have been deprived of their rights. We support them in their struggle against a repressive, oppressive regime and they should not be subjected to four more years of Ahmadinejad and the radical Muslim clerics.

McCAIN: Foxes are in charge of the henhouse. The guardian council are the same ones who were in charge of the election that had these very rapid election returns and it's clearly corrupt. The President should speak out that this election is fraud. It is wrong. It's a deprivation of the Iranian people of their basic human rights.

GREGORY: Vice President Biden said on Sunday the policy of engagement will go forward. Should that be rethought? Is it possible to engage Ahmadinejad now if you're the Obama Administration?

McCAIN: I think it's possible to engage. But item number one is giving the Iranian people a free and fair election. I'd engage vigorously.

One of these is not like the others.
Obama is right on with his statements so far. Fact is we dont have a single clue about what is going on in Iran. If there is going to be political retribution or revolution than let the Iranians figure that out. They were able to before

The silence by Righties in response to Buchanan's praise of Obama is deafening.

Are we sure Pat hasn't become a Democrat?

Pat is a long-time isolationist.

He does know that the west publicly supporting the opposition would be the opposition's death sentence. The mad ayatollahs only like westerners they can do business with, like Reagan.

" Well, we lead; we condemn the sham, corrupt election"

Except in the U.S.

"America outlasts them all...and the Ayatollahs too."

Great stuff, Pat.

True.

America outlasted George W Bush, America will outlast President Obama and his insane socialism too.

If America could survive eight years of George W. Bush then we can survive anything.

" Well, we lead; we condemn the sham, corrupt election"

Except in the U.S.

And saudistan. Remember the no-women allowed, vote for half the municipal seats and King Goldentoiletseat will fill the rest 'election" that Condi had no problem with?
Or Kuwait's grand wazoo sending "parliament" home when it displeased his royalness?
And egypt, but we like the egytian quasi-dictator.
And then there was that fair and free election in palestine that Hamas won. MCtoast was quick to bless that one.

Finally, someone who can play chess.

Well said, Mr. Buchanan.
