WASHINGTON - The Senate struck a historic blow against smoking in America Thursday, voting overwhelmingly to give regulators new power to limit nicotine in the cigarettes that kill nearly a half-million people a year, to drastically curtail ads that glorify tobacco and to ban flavored products aimed at spreading the habit to young people.

Pssst...buddy......want some "real" smokes???

They're taking away our freedom!!!

We should be free to not know what is in our cigarettes.
We should be free to have our kids lured into addiction.

Freedom!!!!! (cough, cough)

This doesn't bode well for the Democrats in 2010. -The Smokes for Votes folks

Wiz the terrorist sympathizer is now advocating more death for the stupid. Doesn't he realize the stupid are the only source of Rtard votes. If they kill all the stupid, there won't be anyone left to vote Rtard.

Tobacco kills stupid people that smoke. You might think the Republicans would be fighting to save them, but then you'd only show that you are an idiot. Republicans don't give a shit about people, even stupid Republican voting people. They only care about profit for corporations and tax breaks for billionaires.

Anyone else wonder why a major tobacco company is in favor of this? Wouldn't it be a bit hypocritical for the FDA to allow a "Drug" that is only known to harm you? Or are they going to make cigs healthy? Who else thinks the first thing they will modify about cigarettes is lowering the nicotine content to reduce the addictiveness, thus increasing the number of cigarettes current smokers smoke to keep their preferred level of nicotine, which would lead them to intake more of the 4000+ other chemicals in cigarette smoke?

Maybe politicians are finally taking drug legalizers up on their request to ban tobacco if they are going to keep pot illegal.

Oh, wait I found the answers to those in the article:
Thursday's legislation gives the FDA power to evaluate the contents of tobacco products and to order changes or bans on those that are a danger to public health. The agency could limit nicotine yields but not ban nicotine or cigarettes.

So, pretty much no more flavored smokes, and the tobacco companies get the FDA to help them sell more cigs. Sounds like a good deal to me. Glad I quit. And the product that help me quit is going to be one of the first things the FDA is going to ban.

As a side note isn't a lot of CHIP funded by smokers?

"Tobacco companies would have to get FDA approval for new products, and would be barred from using terms such as "light" or "mild" that imply a smaller health risk."

More nanny state nonsense, let people decide what they want. Nobody thinks smoking is good for you. This is just more needless regulation. Take a little more from us every day, like a frog we won't know when we are boiling to death.

Will the bill be available to review online?
