As the health care debate heats up, the American Medical Association is letting Congress know that it will oppose creation of a government-sponsored insurance plan, which President Obama and many other Democrats see as an essential element of legislation to remake the health care system.

The opposition, which comes as Mr. Obama prepares to address the powerful doctors' group on Monday in Chicago, could be a major hurdle for advocates of a public insurance plan. The A.M.A., with about 250,000 members, is America's largest physician organization.

just think of how many people 250,000 doctors can influence...

AMA - STFU.

Fucking unions!

Good, not the function of government. These people need to stand up for their industry. They already see how little Medicare / Medicaid reimburse. Who wants to go to doctor that makes minimum wage?

depends upon what YOU THINK YOUR life's worth.

Who wants to go to doctor that makes minimum wage?

But flying on a plane maintained by Mexicans making a dollar a week is okay?

don't you judge those highly skilled airplane mechanics!

don't you judge those highly skilled airplane mechanics!

You obviously value your life less when on an airplane.

i will never fly again. broken wing.

my broom's in the shop.

Just like in Atlas Shrugged.

The World Health Organization states that there are 1.5 million physicians in the US. So 250,000 AMA doctors are the minority.

Of course they don't care about their patients needs they only care about how much can they pay...

fta -
The A.M.A., an umbrella group for 180 medical societies, does not speak for all doctors. One group, Physicians for a National Health Program, supports a single-payer system of insurance, in which a single public agency would pay for health services, but most care would still be delivered by private doctors and hospitals. In recent years, some doctors have become so fed up with the administrative hassles of private insurance that they are looking for alternatives.

This says it all...

who wants to see 250,000 doctors move out of the country?

who wants to see 250,000 doctors move out of the country?

LOL!!!

And what country would they go to and get paid more even after their taxes here.

nanc is a complete moron. I am certain my physician has plans to move to Nicaragua if we get socialized medicine.

"depends upon what YOU THINK YOUR life's worth."

Perhaps you will think about that when the $10.00 per hour medical assistant pushes a syringe into your arm to take your blood. Doctors are involved in your health care but they are only one aspect, there areplenty of other folks, much lower paid, who could kill you just as easily as the doctor so the argument about high pay keeping you safe is bull shit.

Danni,
Please tell me you're describing some possible scenario down the line, and not an actual situation you've encountered.

Nurses aides and the like do not draw blood at any hospital I know of, just nurses and phlebotomists (sp).

there was a doctor on the news recently who has four or five clinics where everything from soup to nuts is offered, with the exception of hospitalization. he's offered a low monthly health plan ($60-$70 per patient) to his patients and they can get care, prescriptions, lab work and the like all under his plan - when asked what made him so successful, he replied that ALL of his patient records are handled by few IN HIS OFFICE and he bypasses all the government bureacratic nonsense attached to medicare and the like.

some people are happy to pay for good care. approximately 7,500 of them if i'm not mistaken. the government TRIED to shut him down.

AMA BACKS OFF opposition to Health Care Plan

"Today's New York Times story creates a false impression about the AMA's position on a public plan option in health care reform legislation. The AMA opposes any public plan that forces physicians to participate, expands the fiscally-challenged Medicare program or pays Medicare rates, but the AMA is willing to consider other variations of the public plan that are currently under discussion in Congress. This includes a federally chartered co-op health plan or a level playing field option for all plans. The AMA is working to achieve meaningful health reform this year and is ready to stand behind legislation that includes coverage options that work for patients and physicians."

The Bully Pulpit at work. Good job, Obama.
