In an upset, state Sen. R. Creigh Deeds claimed his party's nomination for Virginia governor, defeating former Democratic National Committee Chairman Terry McAuliffe and former state Del. Brian Moran. "Wow," Deeds said in a statement.

Southern Half of the Comeback Trail
A GOP opportunity in Virginia.

By Jim Geraghty

How does the GOP candidate for governor in Virginia, Bob McDonnell, stack up against last night's Democratic primary winner, Creigh Deeds?

At first glance, terrific. McDonnell has led every poll taken in 2009 that puts him in a head-to-head matchup with Deeds. McDonnell's favorable rating has been called "Obama-esque." He begins the general election way ahead in fundraising, and has a nearly 10-to-1 advantage in cash on hand. Deeds has a net unfavorable rating among independents (30 percent favorable, 36 percent unfavorable), voters between ages 45 and 59 (35 percent favorable, 37 percent unfavorable), voters above age 60 (28 percent favorable, 42 percent unfavorable), and . . . oh yes, Virginians as a whole (35 percent favorable, 36 percent unfavorable).

I think I saw somewhere that McDonnell beat Deeds in the AG race by like 323 votes.

I am not sure this was a Clinton problem as a problem for McAuliffe not being from around these parts.

He did spend a whole lot of money.

Couldn't have happened to a bigger asshole than McAuliffe.

Virginia doesn't "cotton" to carpetbaggers.

That's pretty much how its being played here and I tend to agree.

Even most of the Virginia dems can not stomach this weasel.

Good for them.

BUT DONT too many of you donate to the thing at the top with the credit cards and all that. you wouldnt want to get in trouble when obama bails all of them out with your money too.....

DAMMIT KERRIN BE FAIR. TerryMac may be a weasel but he is also a snake.

Bob McDonnell is going the next governor of Virginia.

The lefty lost? How come?

The lefty lost? How come?

It was a Dem Primary. I think they were all Lefty's.

When McAuliffe led the DNC and was on TV all the time, I don't think there was a Democrat I believed less. He just has a way of saying things that makes you think he's bullshitting. That couldn't have helped him in Virginia.

He comes accross as the quintessential used-car salesman.

The DNC is better off without him IMO.

Quit insulting the quintessential used-car salesmen of our Country!!

(snicker)

I wasn't surprised Deeds won. Deeds nearly won attorney General 4 years ago. Deeds is also a Blue Dog/moderate, and since Bob McDonnell was unopposed, most of the conservatives that voted, went and voted for Deeds.

Incidentally, Bob McDonnell is the current Attorney General, not the former one.

Yeay!

Bill Mims is the current AG of VA.

Most Poeple Know a carpet-bagger when they see one, I was so surprised when Hillary won in New York, But she was only going to win in the Northeast or California anyway, So she had to.

I love this part "GOP Opportunity"

LOL....Ummm...OK. When Governors start to matter, then I'll worry, but until then.....

In an upset, state Sen. R. Creigh Deeds claimed his party's nomination for Virginia governor,

I didn't think it was an upset. I wasn't alone on that thought either. It was only one for the old dems that think they have a mandate to rule.

McAuliffe just pledged his unwavering support for Deeds. "I'll do whatever he wants me to do!" Too bad for Deeds. Who wants a parasite attached to their coat? Ick.

Upset? No, it simply means that many people in Virginia and I hope elsewhere are sick of McAuliffe and his hopeless addiction to attention.

He is an old Clinton hack - time to go away please and get a job!

Virginia doesn't "cotton" to carpetbaggers.

True dat.

Only New Yorkers will fall for that crap.
