The first detainee from the U.S. military-run prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to arrive in the United States has been moved to New York City to face criminal charges. Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani, a Tanzanian national held at Guantanamo since September 2006, is being charged in connection with the bombings of U.S. embassies in Tanzania and Kenya, according to the Justice Department.

From THERE ARE ALREADY 355 TERRORISTS IN AMERICAN PRISONS: The preposterous arguments against allowing Gitmo detainees into the US by Fred Kaplan (Slate):

President Obama's remark that some Guantanamo detainees might be transferred to American prisons has prompted an extraordinary, and intellectually feeble, storm of protest.
. . .
Sitting lawmakersespecially those from states such as Kansas and Colorado where federal prisons are basedraised the same specter and shouted the ancient cry of principled rebellion: "Not In My Back Yard!"

It makes one wonder: Do any of these legislators know who's in their backyards already, with no apparent detriment to their constituents' daily lives, much less the nation's security?

According to data provided by Traci L. Billingsley, spokeswoman for the U.S. Bureau of Prisons, federal facilities on American soil currently house 216 international terrorists and 139 domestic terrorists. Some of these miscreants have been locked up here since the early 1990s. None of them has escaped. At the most secure prisons, nobody has ever escaped, period....

the panicy american people will come around.

Manuel Noriega

Let's see.
Bushco lied, and Iraq wasn't responsible for 911.
Al Quada is a CIA invention, and an asset of the US and Britain.
The Muslim terror is a big lie, and complete fabrication.
All of the people that were rounded up were goat herders, cab drivers, rival tribal villagers. In Afghanistan the CIA was offering bounties to warlords for basically anyone the warlords brought to them.
It is now common knowledge that they have been torturing prisoners, at all the military prisons.

The people involved with this whole fiasco from the beginning to end are all war criminals, and are the ones that need to be on trial. They have killed millions of innocent civilians, killed and wounded thousands of Americans. They have bankrupted the US economy, and they are creating a police state around you to protect themselves when you finally wake up America.

Invest in Depends, it's a growth industry.

All this expense to detain and prosecute a Tanzanian? They should just send him back there, a worse punishment than Roy Bean would impose.

Bad Idea.

Are we all dead yet?

I'm double wrapping my house in duct tape and plastic.

I just bought me another gun.

Can't be too safe nowadays.

First Gitmo inmate in US court pleads not guilty
news.yahoo.com

They're coming! Oooga Boooga!

Poor red States are pissing their pants.

If we had an indictment on this POS since 2001 and he was captured in 2006 and brought to Gitmo--why wasn't he just brought over then to face trial on the indictment?

I can understand getting ducks in a row--but we tried Rashid whoever and the blind shiek and they are serving life for the first bombing on the Trade Center.

There is no back story on this....

And Americans--75% of them don't want these Gitmo assholes here--We paid 200 million dollars for a state of the art prison in Cuba--just try them and keep them there.

Bush was in the process of doing all this with the help of the court and the congress to do the military tribunals.

If they are found innocent--send them back to their own country.

And Americans--75% of them don't want these Gitmo assholes here ...

Then send them back to their countries. Don't make our military operate a Soviet gulag where the Constitution doesn't apply.

"Don't make our military operate a Soviet gulag where the Constitution doesn't apply."

What? You don't believe Gitmo is a legal Brigadoon, like Scalia? That there exists a magical place where we can have all of the authority, but none of the responsibility? What kind of good 'Murican are you?

First...Bwahahaha. This is going to take awhile, huh Barry?

"This is going to take awhile, huh Barry?"

Impossible. They've been rotting in Cuba for years. No representation. Submitted to harsh interrogation tactics. No Miranda rights.

What charges could they be legitimately convicted of under our system of laws? This, and those to follow, will be show trials meant simply to back up talking points. If they were Americans treated this way for this long they could never be convicted. I just don't see the point of this.

"Then send them back to their countries. Don't make our military operate a Soviet gulag where the Constitution doesn't apply.

And what happens when they escape or are set free? Without question there are innocent people at Guantanamo who never should have been sent there. But can you say with confidence that they won't want to do something bad to us or other innocent people now?

Are the rights of these prisoners worth more than the lives they may very well take in the time after their release/escape?

" can you say with confidence that they won't want to do something bad to us or other innocent people now? "

We can say the same thing about current US prisoners. So using that "logic", we should end all parole, and all jail terms should be life.

"Unless you're a member of the U.A.W."

Yeah, in that case, if you make an agreement, fulfill your side, and work for a generation, you too can be fucked over by a judge that says the company didn't really mean it when it signed your contract.

you too can be fucked over by a judge

The Teamsters got fucked by Jackie Presser who endorsed Ronald Reagan. Deregulation ended the National Contract for most companies because of outfits like Countrywide. It was run by a couple of New Jersey mob guys. They went to Continental Can and subcontracted all their trucking and promised to handle the union.

CC fired its drivers and Countrywide "negotiated" a contract for union drivers at lower wages and benefits. Same job but try to enforce a drivers prerogative to insist on a mechanic when Benny b'Bat is the shop steward.

Trucks got damaged and the FBI shut them down. But the mold was set and then came the lease/haul deals. Guy goes to truck driving school, works for an IC until he gets enough credit to lease a rig, and naturally the insurance, fuel tickets, and his soul all at the company store.

Yet companies like UPS kept their union drivers who drive safely and in coordination.

Lots of good men carried a union card. It's no shame to belong.

If the jihadist is being tried in federal court, could he also face civil claims? Could the families of those who died in the embassy bombings file their suits against him? If so, will this jihadist continue to waste taxpayer money even after he is found guilty of terrorism?

Have we all died yet?

Some people have a seriously hard time admitting they were wrong, so they make shit up.

Lots of good men carried a union card. It's no shame to belong.

#29 | Posted by OzarkAggie

Because their fathers carried the card and were proud WHEN IT MEANT SOMETHING. The idea of a union today is stupid! The parasite is killing the host.

I've never seen anyone voice concern that a detainee who is in custody is in the US. I've seen people voice concern about freeing Gitmo detainees in the US if our courts can't convict them. Since "not guilty" and "innocent" are not the same thing, its a legitimate concern.

So how did this strawman "pants-pissing" circle jerk start?

You rubes have really chosen Axe as your leader? LMFAO

And what happens when they escape or are set free? Without question there are innocent people at Guantanamo who never should have been sent there. But can you say with confidence that they won't want to do something bad to us or other innocent people now?

So we can't free them, even if they are innocent, because they have a good reason to be mad at us now?

That's a monstrous rationalization for the continued detention of innocent people, don't you think? If they did nothing wrong, or we lack the evidence to prove they did something wrong, they cannot be held.

so how much welfare do we owe them?
