North Korea sentenced American journalists Euna Lee and Laura Ling to 12 years of "reform through labor." The pair were detained by soldiers while on a story about refugees looking for food in China for Current TV, a San Francisco-based media company co-founded by Al Gore. The trial was closed to observers and the verdict cannot be appealed.

ABC News provides some important analysis that's not included in the article you linked:

Many analysts believe there is a good chance the two woman will be freed. They say the reporters are being used by Pyongyang as bargaining chips in its standoff with South Korea and the United States, which are pushing for U.N. sanctions to punish the North for its latest nuclear test and a barrage of missile tests.

By sentencing them to prison, North Korea has "paved the way for a political pardon and a diplomatic solution," said Yang Moo-jin, a professor at Seoul's University of North Korean Studies.

He noted that a pardon can only be issued after a conviction and that the regime's courts were not about to find the reporters innocent, which would imply they were wrongly arrested.

Kim Yong-hyun, a professor at Seoul's Dongguk University, said the sentence the maximum possible allowed by the North's laws could have been a reaction to strong statements from the U.S., including threats of sanctions and putting North Korea back on a list of state sponsors of terrorism.

"I think this is the North's response to recent hard-line moves by the U.S.," Kim said. "But the sentence doesn't mean much because the issue will be resolved diplomatically in the end."abcnews.go.com

this is kimmy's leverage - these women had to have had an idea what they were getting into - lisa, laura's sister, has snuck videos into and out of nk to warn the world about what is going on there - this may even be a little pay back.

Of course they knew. Pretty different from the crowd of journalists who don't do much more than transcribe statements at press conferences, eh?

The pair were detained by soldiers while on a story about refugees looking for food in China for Current TV, a San Francisco-based media company co-founded by Al Gore.

Al will take care of it.

so basically they are hostages then...

So Ronery ain't done yet... He wants a fight. Do you think Iran is egging him on behind the scenes?

Obama may get his first real test from this asshole. NKorea is not worth one American soldiers life. They have nothing to offer, we have nothing to gain. Unfortunate this asshole has nukes.

Today he threatened to use nukes against anyone who insulted the dignity or integrity of the PRK.

Time for this midget to go buhbye.

Time for this midget to go buhbye.

I agree-
but what, exactly, are you saying....

buh bye by some doing or involvement of the USA??

2nd question for you : What is this so-called Administration's latest position on this situation

I have not heard anything.

This is a typical North Korean kidnapping extortion plan emboldened by Obama perceived weakness.

That being said, libs are always whining about rehabilitation for prisoners who were never habilitated. We could outsource that job to NK. When those skinny fucks came back they would kiss the first American soil they saw.

This humanitarian has taken two journalists off our hands. No wonder they call him "Beloved Leader."

Can we send some trial attorneys over there, too? Maybe he can help us with those.

another way of sayin screw you barry-nk thinks obama is a punk
jasman

And of course the right nuts chime to pin it all on Obama. I guess serious discussion is still a few years out.

nk is building nukes for peaceful reasons.we must use the unclinched fist unless your israel.

I guess no one told thoes two "don't mess with the bull or you'll get the horn".

Do you think their boss algore will bail them out?

"And of course the right nuts chime to pin it all on Obama."

All Obama is guilty of is continuing the same idiotic pretense that Bush and all his predecessors operated under - that we can do anything about that little bastard without starting a war. Granted, Obama is a fool for making the same mistake everyone else made but he's hardly the first and won't be the last.

If we don't want to look weak, we should stop pretending that we can control the situation when the reality is that our only real recourse is to fight a war we aren't willing to fight.

Perhaps, if we stopped saying "we got this", China would step up and reign in the little weasel. He wouldn't last a month without them.

As for the journalists, I feel bad them. But I also felt bad for the guy on TV he stuck his head in an alligator's mouth and got chomped.

Sully, what have your mother and I told you about making sense on the retort? Now go to your room without dessert.

Why do they villanize Beloved Leader? This article proves his humanity and even honesty as he posed with the girls in front of his main constituency:

I guess China held our pilots after Bush was in office for just 4 months out of respect???

p.s. "habilitated"????

p.s.s. next you'll be telling us 'irregardless'.

As far as these women, I hope they are released. I would not give N. Korea anything. They knew what they were getting into when they went over there.

As I have said before, I do not know why we make N. Korea our problem. Make them China's problem. The way to do that is to open up the store to Japan. Let China know that since they will not do anything about N. Korea we will be forced to sell Japan anything they need to protect themselves. Missle Defense, Atomic Bombs, Jets, Ships, whatever they want. That will get China off the dime and they will deal with N. Korea.

...so basically they are hostages then... -- #5 | Posted by donnerboy

Assuming Kim Jong Il behaves as expected, yeah. Given how notoriously brutal N. Korean labor camps are (beatings, starvation... a substantial number of the prisoners die from abuse and/or malnutrition).

Curious: did you feel the same way about the Americans held hostage by Iran 1979-1981? Were you equally disdainful of Dan Ellsberg for publishing the Pentagon Papers?

Oops; lopped off the end of the sentence. s/b

Given how notoriously brutal N. Korean labor camps are, let's hope Kim Jong Il doesn't send them to one of the "real" ones.

Didn't Lisa Ling go there last year and video tape undercover then go on national TV reporting everything she saw. Now her sister goes over there and actually gets busted for attempting to do the same thing? Big Surprise.

I'm not going to get bent out of shape for these journalists. They knew the risks. They sought to advance their cause and eventually, to enrich themselves. Sometimes fame and fortune requires personal sacrifice. Every cause has it's martyrs.

Why have we not heard for big al????

I wish President Obama had the guts to order a US missile shot at the next missile North Korea shoots toward Alaska/US East Coast. It won't kill anyone, both missile go to pieces in all events as they fall into the Pacific and we get to practice our missile defense system as they test their offensive missile. What's to be scared of Barack? If we miss, it means we better well damn fix the system.
