We love to see the person who pulls himself or herself up by the bootstraps.

By that measure, if you're looking for a human interest best-seller to put on the Supreme Court, Sonia Sotomayor is the ideal choice. She was born in the Bronx to immigrants from Puerto Rico and was raised by her mother after her father died when she was nine.

Judging from the accolades showered on Sotomayor over the past several weeks, you would think that coming from humble beginnings is the benchmark for the Supreme Court.

Well, if that's the case, recall how Clarence Thomas was treated in his confirmation process. I guarantee you'll not find more humble beginnings than his birthplace in Pin Point, Ga.

Man, does this article hit the nail on the head or what??!!??

More low Wattage from JC the semi supa star?

K, now wot is it?

The reason these three minority candidates got no credit for their individual journeys is due to the fact they lined up the wrong way on the Second Amendment -- the right to keep and bear arms.

They lined up the wrong way on when life begins -- at the time of conception.

They lined up wrong on how to make policy. They believe our nation creates policy through legislation -- not through the courts, as Judge Sotomayor and President Obama seem to believe.

Political parties use litmus tests?

Shocked, Spud is shocked to hear such scurrilous allegations.

Has Ric Romero been told?

Sorry, was JC trying to esplain that the reason the rethugs should fillibuster her in his opinion was NOT because of those same issues?

Cos that'd be funny.

Man, does this article hit the nail on the head or what??!!??

Hmmm... dunno if Spud would go so far as to say "hit the nail..." here.

Leseee... After reading the whinge-fest of butt-hurt Rep comments below the article Spud certainly sez it's worth scanning fer a cheap chuckle.

How's that?

Clarence Thomas is a certifiable loonie, btw.

Be Well.

Nice rant - you didn't actually say anything, but it sounded good nonetheless.

Basically, Spud sed that Watts was as predictable as he was hypocritical here.

Did you miss that part?

Or did you already know that one?

Be Well.

I understand what you are saying - I just happen to disagree.

Minorities towing a conservative line have been brutalized by the left - in a very viscious manner. Some of the criticisms are at worst debatable, at best legitimate. Some of the criticisms are flat-out baseless. However, the 'Uncle Tom' label and all that goes with it lends to a ferocious attack against any seriuosly right-leaning minority seeking public office.

This has happened far too often to be 'happenstance' and far too often to simply cast off ALL of these minorities as unqualified, dangerous hacks.

Did JC employ some hyperbole?

Of course - but he was also spot-on.

The article is way off base. The reason Clarence Thomas was (and still is) maligned is because he was a chauvinistic boss and a sexual harasser to boot. Not to mention his intelligence as reflected by the (lack of) quality of his written opinions is questionable.

Mod,

If Clarence Thomas was the only example cited, I'd be willing to entertain your point. However, he wasn't - and he's far from the only minority to be brutalized by the left for being a turncoat.

Regarding Thomas...

When I view ALL of the evidence regarding Anita Hill, it comes accross to me as a bunch of trumped-up bullshit. However, I do acknowledge that his qualifications for the position were weak. His resume was thin.

Yes, they've been called terrorist fist-bumpin', Secret Muslim American Haters and even been accused of not really being American citizens.

Oh wait, no, that was Barack "The Magic Negro" Obama Spud was thinking of there.

The reason many minorities do so poorly running as GOP has to do to a generational understanding of the GOP as being the more racist party of the two by far by many minorities.

Accusations of being "tokens" or "window dressing" aside the minorities the GOP champiions are usually the most overly zealous hard core type of righty available and thus it's their policies and mentalities are wot the left object to first and foremost.

Be Well.

I don't pretend that these are flawless candidates - no such entity exists. I also don't suggest that these candidates don't possess legitmate flaws - of course they do. However, the left goes after the minority conservatives with a spitefullness that goes well-beyond the usual political 'assassination'.

It has happened far too many times to be mere coincidence.

Gotta run.

Have a good night and Go Wings!

"the responsibility of the jurist is to define the law of the land, not to create it."

It's sad how so many judges won't subscribe to this ideal and twist (or allow shysters to) the Constitution to justify their rulings.

If someone sincerely believes that their particular agenda better fits the ideals of our society then it is their right and duty to put it forth for consideration by the people (or their legislators) not make an end-run around the status quo thru the courts.
