Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

Yesterday, at a hearing on a law that would allow gay nationals to bring their foreign partners into the United States, Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) grew impatient during the testimony of Shirley Tan, she faces deportation back to the Philippines even though her partner of 23 years and her children are American citizens. The New Republic reported that Sessions mocked Tan's child for crying, telling an aide, "Enough with the histrionics."

The Court of public debate is now in session.

Resolved: That Jeff Sessions is a total douchebag.

Representing the pro side. ...A talking potato.

DS: Is true. The guy's a total douche! S'rsly!!

* sits down *

Anyone on the Con side want a turn?

Be Well.

Fucking wingnuts. They must be missing some fundamental part of the brain.

Had enough yet?

Actually, I get sick of the "emotional" testimony at these congressional hearings. These are usually ringers they bring in to emote. Decisions and deliberations should be more dispassionate because when laws are enacted they are interpreted by courts dispassionately.
I am not saying do not care about such things, just make the process of debate less of a circus.

I watched the video in the article and never heard anything like what was reported.

I'm not saying that he didn't say it, but if you put a video in an article, it usually supports the accusation being made.

"Decisions and deliberations should be more dispassionate because when laws are enacted they are interpreted by courts dispassionately.

#4 | Posted by Diablo"

That actually makes no sense at all, Diablo. It is a classic non sequitir.

dispassionate

Sounds like yer arguing fer Robo-Judges.

Milton Friedman, the economist guy, used to argue that the global economy ought to be run entirely by a giant computer.

He was quite, quite mad.

Be Well.

Montecore, ever hear the phrase "Tell it to the judge?" Courts must take laws as written and interpret them dispassionately. That is what I meant. When emotionalism comes into the process of making law, it gives good press but bad law. That is all I meant.
I think this person could have just testified without the "Oh, the poor baby seals" emotionalism. It hurts our side in elections, believe me.

Dethspud, I always like your posts because you are fair and never abusive. So please tell me what source you have for the giant computer Friedman idea. I read many of his writings (agree with his monetary theory but not much else) and never saw that proposal. In fact, Friedman was way too Ayn Rand for me and I doubt he would ever think that. If I am wrong, I'd appreciate the enlightening.

So please tell me what source you have for the giant computer Friedman idea.

Spud read it here.

Naomi Klein's "The Shock Doctrine".

Is good book.

Be Well.

Diablo:

The purpose of permitting civilian testimony at Congressional hearings is to give citizens an all-too-rare opportunity to communicate the effect of dispassion on ordinary people. It's one thing to pass a law; it's quite another to hear how the enactment of that law changed a human life. Among the many things lawmakers forget (often willfully), the chiefest is that laws are supposed to protect people, in large ways and small; they should never be enacted for the purpose of ruling people, much less to serve special interests.

I would personally like to see more such "emotional" testimony, not less. I would particularly like to see those lawmakers who changed all our trade laws confronted with the people whose jobs, homes and even entire towns have vanished because of wage undercutting by other countries. And when I say I'd like to see those guys confronted by the people whose lives they ruined, I mean I'd like to see them confronted by all their victims at once.

That link brings me to the cover of a book by someone other than Friedman. Do you have an online confirmation of this alleged belief? I am familiar with MF and very much doubt he would have written that himself, although I don't put it past anyone to put words in someone's mouth.

We will probably disagree on that, MaryTyler, but it is only a procedural debate. I am just too old to fall for emotionalism anymore but realize it it part of growing up to be snookered by such medicine shows. You will see that when global warming (already curiously absent from the media in favor of "carbon footprint") goes away without any explanation from its supporters, some new mythology will take its place as the new reason to abrogate our freedoms. Oh, the "wars" on drugs and terrorism rate up there as well.

Someone should slap that crybaby kid until he stops blubbering.

About whom do you post, Zeitgeist?

Diablo:

I hear you about the circus-y aspect of blubbering in front of a committee.

But if we're ever to have positive change in this country, pols have to see that what they do - or fail to do - affects people, and I know of no better way (short of revolution) than citizen testimony to put them in touch with the effects of their "dispassionate" decisions.

In fact, I'd iike to see those committee chambers' doors marked with the words "Department of Unintended Consequences."

"In fact, I'd iike to see those committee chambers' doors...

Oops. Typoid Mary strikes again.

Ah well, let it stand. I like iike.

I'm talking about the prop the dems used at the hearing. (pssssst, hey kid, cry like a baby when your mommys start talking)

Leave it to dems to find something pathetic to whine over.

"Leave it to dems to find something pathetic to whine over."

...And leave it to Rethugs to find something pathetic to run for office.

I'd like those committee doors posted with "Abandon all hope ye who seek honesty here" myself, Marytyler. Agree to disagree. Just please remember my advice as you move along in life. Romance (in media, not in your personal life), the sports pages, advertising, music, politics....it is ALL attempts at mass manipulation. The best "positive change" is to make sure no national "concensus" is imposed. Let the states and locals decide their ethic.
These people in both parties live day-to-day seeking issues that inflame us and shamelessly proceed to goad us with anger and sentimentality.

They should have had Bwaney Fwank babysit the kid.

Diablo:

Agreed to agree to disagree. Unless you disagree.

It's just that I think that while you have a point, too many of our laws are made in cold blood. It's one thing to favor caps on liability judgments, fr'instance; that's a rational decision that makes a great deal of logical sense. It's quite another to see a quadriplegic, heavily brain-damaged kid who used to be a running back for his high-school's team, but who was injured by a defective product and whose care has not only wiped his family out financially, but who's costing his community big taxpayer bucks for taking up the slack created by letting a corporation off the hook for negligence.

That's the kind of thing I mean - pols just need to see the practical effects of their decisions once in a while.

And-diablo(you devil you!)-the kid wasn't "crying on cue".
He'd "teared up" at hearing he may yet have to watch his birth Mother be deported.
He didn't break out crying in histrionics.

If you wingnuts are going to have an opinion-at least inform yourselves of the facts.

I know-I know-wingnuts and facts aren't the best of friends-but at least try!

Frank, I never said he cried on cue, did I? Be fair. So go slow with the "wing nuts" name calling.

Hahahahahaha, Is that Frank55 crying like a little girl over this sham drama scene?

Hilarious.....They should put you in the background when the next two mom testify.

did you see Faber vs Brown?

Brown is now 2-0 over Faber, I'd like to see him at 155 over at the UFC.

I know what you mean, Marytyler. They already know the practical effects of their decisions because they organize these shows to justify whatever they have already decided out of your view. It is all theater.
I know that sounds cynical. No need to tell me. I've seen it first hand and anyone with a heart should want to kick a politician's ass from Maine to Moscow regardless of what party the creep belongs to.

"I know that sounds cynical. No need to tell me. I've seen it first hand and anyone with a heart should want to kick a politician's ass from Maine to Moscow regardless of what party the creep belongs to."

Now we agree. Agreed?

Unless we disagree about agreeing.

I disagree about agreeing to disagree, but will defend to the death your right to agree about disagreeing unless I disagree, Marytyler. BTW, I hope the last part of your handle is only playful self-depreciation. One of the very best friends I ever had was in that business and the price those poor ladies pay is horrible in the long run.
Cheers!

Agreed Rex. Brown is a big fish in a small pond. A move to 155 would mean he has waded into deep waters. He has the size to do it. He was much bigger than Faber.

actually DS, not "quite:"

oops, nevermind. your whack. you're too young to be so whack Diablo. find your way back to sanity while there still is a semblance of civilization.

Ichiro, I have no audio on my puter (actually my ancient ears). What was the vid dialogue? I'd still like a source for the claim Friedman ever wanted a computer to monitor all....but the one who posted that is very honest and I doubt he would be lax about checking it all and reporting back here.-
And of course passion and objectivity are not mutually exclusive. But they have to be when the mayor appears for a traffic ticket before a municipal court, right?.

R_ZEITGEIST: Leave it to dems to find something pathetic to whine over.

PATHETIC is your boy [bigot] Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., doing the whining, RTFA.

short answer? no. (i was already in context, btw.)
for example, take "mandatory sentencing" (i.e., BIG alive and kicking controversy... yes, among judges).

Deport the senate: via catapult.

my vid is to Dr. Tater who referred to Uncle Milt (RIP) as "quite mad."

i responded with a reference to Friedman's anti-Drug Prohibition stance -- make it all legal for both, American, ethical (legal), economic, and most of all moral reasons. (sorry gots me no transcript). but here's one you may enjoy:

the last line is... good.

as far as Milt's computer? seems almost overly reported -- common knowledge: (google is our friend), click here:

here it is, tons of it, right in the abstracts:

WSJ: Do you still think it would be a good idea to have a computer run monetary policy?
Friedman: Yes.

www.opinionjournal.com

Come on now, this is very poor and misleading Reporting. I would expect to see this on MSNBC, not here. Tell the truth about what was said, how it was said and in what manner; off mike and that the kid did not hear it.

Lehey the liberal ass that he is probably scared this kid with his dumbass questions. Hell I am 45 and he scares the hell out of me! Then again all liberals do.

I have personal experience with good friends facing deportation. ICE is a heavy handed bureaucratic organization, that's notoriously capricious in its enforcement. I'm trying right now to help a talented and hard working engineer, that's married with children, to avoid deportation. This is a productive person, that is no drain on society. It can be a sad experience, no question about that.

HOWEVER, I too get tired of the staged histrionics that are now the soup du jour at congressional hearings.

These media matter releases, designed solely to savage Republicans, and printed word for word by a compliant and unethical media, never give the whole story. Sessions is a very smart and reasonable Senator.. to paint him otherwise is wrong.

Good for the Senator, nothing worse that whinning lezbos.

Sessions mocked Tan's child for crying, telling an aide, "Enough with the histrionics."

can't wait for him to say that to Glenn Beck. And Chicken"rancher", there is something worse. See comment above. Rightwing pussies crying about failing and losing is worse.

Thanks, Ichiro. My estimation of MF just went down.

This really makes Session look like Mean Old Mr. Potter from It's a Wonderful Life. How dumb could the guy be to be overheard mocking a crying child at a Senate hearing?

Could have been worse, he could have been savaging an infant with Downs Syndrome.....

What? Oh yea, that's just plain funny....

How could I forget?

They should have had Bwaney Fwank babysit the kid.

Well, you see, that's probably a good idea. Barney Frank is simply gay, NOT a pedophile.

I agree that Barney Frank would be a much better choice than Mark Foley.

Good for the Senator, nothing worse that whinning lezbos.

I think you have me confused with someone else Reagan55, it's very possible, because I don't even know who you are.

Oh well, time to get back to thumping my bible.

Hahahahaha

I think both Sessions and the Childs mother were wrong in this incident.

For Sessions it was a moment of honesty he may have regretted after the words left his mouth. It did make him seem old and out of touch.

For the Mother, this was going to be an emotional rollercoaster no matter what happens and the mother should not have had her child there to feel the emotions of the moment.

So two wrongs made a child very uncomfortable and left him crying. And that is not right...

I make declarative statements of fact, you can either accept them, refute them, or ignore them ...

In other words, you don't have a source for that claim.

I would love to do the research for you Rogers, but I'm busy reading the bible right now.

Pancho, Lyoto may be the pound for pound greatest fighter of all time. I would love to see him and Anderson Silva square off. Or him and Fedor for that matter.

I think Lyoto could beat them both.

G-D! This article is a complet waist of time.

FrankF55, what the hell are you thinking?

The article is a waist of bandwidth, but what's worse, is that you post it here!

By the way, folks -

What in the hell is a Repub doing criticizing anyone for "histrionics" after that damn wink of Palin's and McCain's weeping in that footage of him being interviewed in the Hanoi Hilton?

One was rehearsed, the other was real, but both incidents injected emotion into proceedings where such things are not usually demonstrated.

Next.

And don't ask me for sources - do you own research.

Why the fuck would they let a child into a Senate hearing?

To garner sympathy by subjecting the child to a place where that child shouldn't be? They should be ashamed to exploit the child that way. Ya, Sessions should be nicer - but they aren't exactly at a grocery store.
