While I think that Judge Sotomayor may have made a racist comment, I don't believe a comparison to her and the step-father of this child is in any way valid. One possibly racist comment is a long way from thinking that Hitler was a good guy or that Pakistanians carry aids and should be sent back to their country.

But it does bring up an interesting question... what is a parent allowed to do, and what can the state step in for?

If the kid says racist things, do you take the kid? What if they drop the F-bomb all the time? What if they bring a Bible to school? What if they bring a Koran? Mein Kampf? Pot? Head lice? Don't wear a coat? Dirty socks?

The alleged racism is not the only reason child welfare workers seized the children. They also allege the children were often neglected and lived in filthy homes. The children are currently staying with extended family members.

Isn't that always the case? I was helping a friend of a friend move and her apartment was friggin disgusting. Her babies were crawling around on the filthy floor and she was smoking like a chimney.

A few years ago, I was living with Julia (a black lady in FL) who wanted to get some work done on her house. Talking with her black neighbor who said (and I'll try and quote her exactly) "Don't you hire you no nigger, they'll screw you every time. Hire you some nice jew or white guy".

As it turns out, my friend ignored her neighbor, hired a local black guy to build the new room on her house, and he did a good job.

The reason for this post is not to have an excuse to use bad language but to point out that racism is more widespread than people think, and often within the same race.

If Julia's neighbor sent a kid to school with such a thing written on her, yes, take the kid by all means. It is not the belief, but rather the risk someone will take offense and hurt the child that is at issue. The people in the news story above are real tools for doing that to the kid.
