Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs
Thursday, June 04, 2009

President Barack Obama called for a "new beginning between the United States and Muslims" and said together, they could confront violent extremism across the globe. "This cycle of suspicion and discord must end," Obama said in a widely anticipated speech in one of the world's largest Muslim countries. "Just as Muslims do not fit a crude stereotype, America is not the crude stereotype of a self-interested empire."

Full text of Obama's Cairo speech: www.huffingtonpost.com

#1 - It is a good speech
#2 - It has driven Rex into a frothing-at-the-mouth frenzy.

I see it as a win-win.

"And I consider it part of my responsibility as president of the United States to fight against negative stereotypes of Islam wherever they appear," said the president, who recalled hearing prayer calls of "azaan" at dawn and dusk while living in Indonesia as a boy

Gee, I recall all the libtards on this site swearing that he only attended a christian school in Hawaii. I'm looking at you Americanunity. Obama has proven you a fool.

Nobody, including AU, ever said that. We all know he went to school in Indonesia... where he attended public school for a while, then a private Catholic school.

The History of Punahou

Founded in 1841, Punahou School was designed originally to provide a quality education to the children of Congregational missionaries, allowing them to stay in Hawai`i with their families, instead of being sent away to school. The first class had 15 students.

Today, this coeducational college preparatory day school enrolls over 3,750 students. We are nonsectarian but retain our Christian heritage.

The only poster proven a fool here this morning is you, Shirts. Obama's attendance at school in Indonesia was discussed ad infinitum, ad nauseum during the campaign. As an "issue" it ranked right up there with questions about his citizenship and the "Whitey Tape."

I'm just waiting for some rightie tightie to jump on Obama's use of the phrase "the holy Koran." That's when it'll really get to be fun.

As for me, I thought it was a powerful, eloquent, and potentially groundbreaking address. Long road ahead. But it's a speech his predecessor could never have given (even if he'd wanted to). So, major improvement.

"who recalled hearing prayer calls of "azaan" at dawn and dusk while living in Indonesia as a boy"

He said he was a Christian not that he was deaf you fool.

You can stroll down Brompton Road in London and hear the same thing. So what? Jeezus, Shirts, get an f*in' clue.

Who cares what his fucking education is? I'm looking for a president who can effectively do positive things for this country. I'm still waiting.

Before that last sentence sends the left into a tizzy, I realize he's only been in office a few months. OK?

Wouldn't national health care be a positive thing for America??
Wouldn't an economic recovery be a positive thing??
How about a plan for energy independence??

Wouldn't national health care be a positive thing for America??

I'm not sure. But at any rate we don't have it.

Wouldn't an economic recovery be a positive thing??

Yes, and I'm still waiting

How about a plan for energy independence??

It's a start. I'd rather see action rather than a plan. Texas is way ahead of the rest of the country on that. Maybe the states should take some ititiative, too.

itiative = iniative

itiative = iniative = initiative

fuck

LOL

Goatman--you're having my kind of day with the typing/spelling. : ) And thanks for this: "Before that last sentence sends the left into a tizzy, I realize he's only been in office a few months. OK?" We often disagree, but that statement and the preceding one were fair. I like disagreeing with people who can he fair.

"I have come here to seek a new beginning between the United States and Muslims around the world; one based upon mutual interest and mutual respect."

Mutual interest? Could anything be less interesting than their constant babbling about their idiotic fucking religion and how everything we do in some way offends it? Other than mutually beneficial business and trade arrangements, our engagement with that part of the wolrd should be minimal. Leave us alone and we'll leave you alone. And yes, that means we leave Iraq and Afghanistan and stop giving Israel billions to build settlements even as they tell us to go screw ourselves.

Obama's attendance at school in Indonesia was discussed ad infinitum, ad nauseum during the campaign.

By who?

Great speech

Its a start

Of course the negative loud voices are going to try to stop mutual progress. Haters from both sides, muslim and non muslim.

Its a shrinking world and diversity, respect and equality for all is a worthy and necessary cause.

With my both muslim AND american background, I was heavily moved.

The idea of spreading progress with a goal of building centers of learning was the best part of the speech.

If this is actually done, We will be in a better world. As I've said many times that extremism has grown due to a large uneducated population and without curing that the battle against militancy will be lost.

Those who think we can go back to isolation have learned nothing from the credit crisis.

We live in an increasing shrinking and mutually dependant world.

If you disagree with that you have already been left behind.

"Your old road is rapidly fading. Please get out of the new one if you can't lend a hand for the times, they are a changing." - Bob Dylan.

Goatman--you're having my kind of day with the typing/spelling. : )

I'm excited. I'll be back onshore tomorrow. I'm darting between handover notes, ordering last minute parts, and the DR. I'll probably have a lot of typos today!

Thanks for the post.

"Could anything be less interesting than their constant babbling about their idiotic fucking religion and how everything we do in some way offends it?"

Sorry sully but you are just as at fault as these babblers. The minority of haters standing in the way of progress.

You ARE joking, right?

Tomorrow is Friday. I think you are out of sync with your calendar. Hope you didn't have a dental appointment yesterday! *grin*

And to think I got a laugh out of your frustration trying to spell the word "initiative" when I can't even figure out what day of the week it is today!

Mmmm, is that coffee aroma I smell here in my kitchen?

Maybe a cup (or two) of caffeine will help my "mental calendar" get in sync with reality.

I can't even figure out what day of the week it is today!

Well, if it makes you feel any better, I do that a lot out here. But you freaked me out because I thought I had done it again and I had an extra day on the rig. I immediately checked the calendar on the PC and *WHEW!* I was glad to see that it really was Thursday.

how long before Obamafool realizes that Muslim hate is what it is.... his propping himself up as some kind oif messiah will end up in him fallings flat on his face and he and his worshippers will realize he is not the "great healer" and nobody but nobaody is going to stop the bloodlust of the muslim fanatics.
A nice smile and clever speech goes over well with the dannis and Dethspuds ....but this guy is imperiling all of us with this pants-down , please use lube if you will, muslims" approach
I pity all of you the way you embarass yoursleves by buying into this nightmare of an infomercial turned reality.

#10 | POSTED BY DANNI

Let me go a step further than Goatman here.

#1 - Depending on the kind of national healthcare we get... yes It COULD be positive. The kind we're going to get from this administration, no it WON'T be.

#2 - Only if it's a sustainable recovery. Re-inflating the same bubbles that burst last time doesn't count as a positive, and that's all BHO is doing at this point.

#3 - It surely would be. It would require drilling our own oil, shale, and developing something more efficient and less fiscally irresponsible than corn ethanol. Is Obama really going to dump his eco freak and farm subsidy votes in order to do what it takes to become energy independent? My bet is no.

"Depending on the kind of national healthcare we get... yes It COULD be positive. The kind we're going to get from this administration, no it WON'T be."

Tell me...how many letters to your Congressmen and Senators have you written??? Phone calls???

Max Bacchus was opposed to any government plan but changed his position after being inundated with calls and letters. We will only get what we need if we actively participate. All members of Congress should have their phones ring off the hook and letters should be piling up to fast to open. Don't let them pretend that we are getting the health care system we want when they won't even put single payer on the table.
Medicare going broke, best way to fix it is to increase the risk pool with younger, healthier people in the mix. We have the stupidest system possible, old and infirm in one system while young and healthy are stuck in the for-profit system allowing insurance companies to only insure the less risky among us.

"Sorry sully but you are just as at fault as these babblers. The minority of haters standing in the way of progress."

How so? I don't hate anyone. I've never had a personal problem with a Muslim - well maybe here but that's not real life. In fact, in most cases when I've met a Muslim I probably didn't even know it because I really don't care...... I have no problem gettting along with anyone.

I just don't think we there is much mutual interest between the US and the Muslim world. They find us offensive with our self indulgence and lack of interest in their religion and we find them extremely boring and backward with their overly demanding religion that they never shut up about and their inability to understand that its not for everyone.

That's not prejudice. That's an honest assessment of our relationshiop. All the PC Kumbaya nonsense Obama was spewing that you ate up so eagerly isn't real.

#16 - Sully, there's no hope of them leaving us alone if we're constantly in war mode. Obama is attempting to tone down the rhetoric so wars aren't necessary. Find common ground, take the high road, reach out to people.

Obama knows as well as you and I do that no matter how much we make nice there's no guarantee of peace. Terrorists are not rational. But it's pretty clear that military intervention doesn't always work either. War tends to push fence-straddlers away from compromise.

Even if this doesn't work, the U.S. comes out looking like the good guy rather than the bully always itching for a fight. Perceptions count in international relations.

#10 | Posted by danni at 2009-06-04 08:47 AM

Wouldn't national health care be a positive thing for America??

No. It would redistribute "health care" rather than expand it, so that it would be rationed, removed from people now receiving it and redistributed. The elderly, the disabled, those with orphan diseases would lose the dedication of resources they now received, and inhumanely consigned to the scrap heap. The dynamics that enable progress in medical fields to be made will be removed. And as with care under government auspices, innovation will be removed and the lowest quality of care given as the priority becomes budgetary considerations. Look at the curtailments that will be made in California for a vision of things to come.
Wouldn't an economic recovery be a positive thing??

Well yes. Unfortunately, the Obama initiatives are destroying industry and commerce, subjecting it to constraints so that there is a declining tax base, income, sales, property, while people lose their sources of livelihood. People no longer have access to subsistence farming as they are urban now, and so will of necessity rely on the government for sustenance. The government, having taken ownership of productive assets which it does not have the knowledge to use (analogous to the Zimbabwe seizure of farms which became unproductive) will result in scarcity. There will be a decreasing spiral in production of goods and services. And the government will be hard-pressed to secure revenue to avoid starvation.

And just wait until the impact of the inevitable inflation due to Obama's creation of printing press wealth, hits, and we replicate the economic and social instability that characterized the Weimar Republic antecedent to Hitler's acquisition of power, and the counterpart in Mugabe's Zimbabwe.

How about a plan for energy independence??

Obama's "plan" is comprehensive and many aspects of it are counterprductive. One facet will merely transfer rights to pollute without reducing pollution, and enable other countries to use more efficient fossil fuels while our competitive ability is further curtailed by the burdens Obama's misconceived "plans" put upon is.

Obama has been and is a disaster, no longer looming but here and with constantly increasing dimension.

Oh well, danni, what if? The screw-up-in-chief is a posturing prancing preening narcissist and sociopath further compromised by his being a self-medicating ambulatory schizophrenic and also with neurological problems. His affinity for totalitarian Islam conditioned as he was as a youth registered and self-identifying as a Muslim, and his inculcation with communist values and beliefs by his communist apparatchek surrogate father, Davis, and his continuing indoctrination as a black grievance collector by America-hating, white-hating, Jew-hating Rev. Wright for some two decades doesn't make Obama an advocate for America, but rather an antagonistic person seeking to advance parochial interests of favored groups. There is no epiphany for this associate of racial hate-monger bigot "God damn America," Rev. Wright, and America-hater domestic terrorist Weatherman Bill Ayers, that distances him from their heartfelt beliefs. Obama, the equivalent of the Manchurian Candidate as an Islamic in mufti is destroying America with his power as his hatred manifests itself.

Obama doesn't recognize that there is no moral equivalency between the West and between its Christianity and Judaic roots, and the primitive totalitarian brutal Islam that curtails freedom of thought and expression, and engages in vicious persecution and suppression of non-Islamics.

This isn't just PC kumbaya nonsense. Not being at war, and holding onto allies, are in our nation's best interest.

The screw-up-in-chief is a posturing prancing preening narcissist and sociopath further compromised by his being a self-medicating ambulatory schizophrenic and also with neurological problems.

Congratulations, Johnson. You've outdone yourself.

Here's the whole speech

www.c-span.org

Standing ovation well deserved. Anyone who still asks, 'what change?", just isn't paying attention.

It was worth the time for him to be able to explain E Pluribus Unum and the American Way.

Despite the naysayers and fearmongerers, Obama is at least trying to give peace a chance. If it doesn't work, the war-lovers will have their chance.

No. It would redistribute "health care" rather than expand it, so that it would be rationed, removed from people now receiving it and redistributed.

Posted by Johnson aka Horace

You have only theories to prove this. The Europeans I have met are satisfied with their socialized medicine. They get the treatment they need and continue to be healthier than Americans on average. All the stars favor socialized medicine. It falls back on to the fact you know your taxes will go up.

Johnson's vile masturbatory rhetoric aside, of course.

"It falls back on to the fact you know your taxes will go up."

The real motive behind almost all right wing opinion.

#36 | Posted by cbob at 2009-06-04 10:42 AM

... military intervention doesn't always work either. War tends to push fence-straddlers away from compromise.

Au contraire. War waged without restraint as in WWII works in compelling adherence to the victor's requirements. This half-hearted restrained "human rights considerations" accepting imposed restraints as if to sterilize the destructive thing war is, is what compromises war as a settlement device for disputes. We don't need compromise, we need victory and to prevail.
Even if this doesn't work, the U.S. comes out looking like the good guy rather than the bully always itching for a fight. Perceptions count in international relations.

Perceptions count. If we indicate we are willing to fight and that opposition to our interests will result in your destruction, that perception by "the international community" will facilitate compliance with our requirements.

Despite the naysayers and fearmongerers, Obama is at least trying to give peace a chance. If it doesn't work, the war-lovers will have their chance.

You're funny the way you can take a whole segment of the population that might call themsellves "realists" and attribute the LOVE of war an death and destruction to them.

You're kinda funny that way.

Does history teach you nothing, corkster?

appeasment of a society bent on the destrucion of "infidels" and spread of Islam thru the world are not impressed with your false messiah.

and furthermore,

I think Johnson is perhaps the most clear thinking poster on the DR. I cannot remember the last time anyone INCLUDING YOU took johnson on ( I mean the DR poster) and factually refuted him on his assertions - you all just usually dismiss him with insults b/c you cannot handle it.

They were very impressed with him and what he said, actually,

And, unfortunately for you and your ilk, al-Qaeda is less popular in the ME than ever, moderate Muslims having tired of suicide bombers.

Besides, you haven't even seen the speech.

"appeasment of a society bent on the destrucion of "infidels" and spread of Islam thru the world are not impressed with your false messiah."

The Muslims could say exactly the same thing about Christians and they have wars to use as examples.
Lumping all Muslims together is as nonsensical as lumping all Christians together without regard to sect, nationality, etc.

And Johnson only writes to hear himself talk. He is technically adequate, but substantively challenged and boringly racist.

"Sully, there's no hope of them leaving us alone if we're constantly in war mode"

I guess you missed the part where I said we need to end the occupations and stop funding Israel's settlements.

Saying we don't have much in common with them due to our fundamentally different belief systems isn't saying we need to start self destructive wars with them.

Sometimes the best way to avoid conflict is to ackowledge your differences and leave each other alone. Trying to constantly force ourselves on these people only annoys them more and I don't blame them as I get annoyed when they assume we should give a crap about their religion.

This is just plain smart.

They were very impressed with him and what he said, actually,

And, unfortunately for you and your ilk, al-Qaeda is less popular in the ME than ever, moderate Muslims having tired of suicide bombers.

I see what you did there.

you ( and Danni) now take the position that this speech was aimed at reconciling with the "friendlier" segment of the Muslim population and restoring a better relationship with the regulkar , moderate muslim population....

but your earlier post said that if Obamas approach doesn't work, the WARLOVERS will have their chance -
implying that his speech was aimed at deflating the hatred of the radical terrorist wing of the population

so which is it ?

please don't shift your position on Obamas aims just to protect him.

#34 | POSTED BY DANNI

Mostly just emails. Probably a few dozen. But that's a pipe dream to assume it will do any good. The health care industry is dug into Washington like an inoperable brainstem tumor. Any hope of getting what's best for "the people" went out the window long ago. When you've got both parties in your pocket, a few hundred letters from the rubes in flyover country aren't going to stop you from having policy made your way. Watch this play out and when they pass some garbage without even considering single payer, I think you'll agree that it's not just healthcare thats broken in this country. Our government is acting solely on behalf of their corporate interests. No matter what side is in power.

By the way, good to see you admitting that Medicare is broke. I thought you were of the mind that Medicare and SS were above scrutiny.

Also, do you ever catch Bill Moyers? I just listen to the podcast, but it was on healthcare on the 22nd and if you didn't hear it, check it out. Good stuff.

Nope, I dont need to watch it.

Those two things are not mutually exclusive, unless one can only think in black and white.

Influencing moderate Muslims, the vast majority of Muslims, is the key to, "deflating the hatred of the radical terrorist wing of the population."

-Nope, I dont need to watch it.

Ignorance is indeed bliss.

"The great masses of the people will more easily fall victims to a big lie than to a small one,"

NOPE. Goebbels. That's sort of like confusing Rove with Bush... (And now I'm wondering which big lie you're commenting on.)

The big lie of "Change we can believe in"

These people will never stop killing each other until they are all dead, Didn't the Isrealis basically force there people out of GAZA kicking and screaming and there reward was more missles coming from a better spot to luanch from?

Obama giving a lesson in American history and values to the Muslim world, and reminding them numerous times of what the Koran actually says about murderous extremists was alone worth the effort.

Point taken on your #58.

I still say that this is all pie in the sky, been there done that. Let's see Pakistan, Egypt, Indonesia start killing their terrorist citizens because of Obama.
WRONG
My point still is:
the Muslim fanatics FEEL THEY EXIST for the purpose of all out jihad and the realization of a Muslim state.
No amount of nationalistic pressure from the moderates in their country of origin is going to dissuade them from their religious beliefs.

IMO The bombing should commence in 20 minutes

.....But it was the tap dance followed up with a blistering hambone that brought the house down.

"Our government is acting solely on behalf of their corporate interests."

Can't deny it but I still have some hope that Obama and some of the Dems can be pressured into representing the interests of their consituents. Perhaps naive but hopelessness does not seem like a good option either.
Medicare could easily be fixed if we included younger and healthier people into the system and took a part of what is now spent on health care insurance as taxes to pay for it. It would still be cheaper for most people than private health care insurance.

-IMO The bombing should commence in 20 minutes

Typical ignorant redneck philosophy.

LOL !

Too bad you rightwingers can't even give the speech a chance to let the Muslim world cool down a little. Step outside your partisan box for a minute and try to see the big picture.

When you're having an argument with a co-worker, your spouse, a neighbor, and so on - do you think it's productive to keep that fight going permanently, or at some point do you try to figure out how to work it out? Maybe it can't be worked out in every case, but is it really wise not to try?

Johnson, I said "military intervention doesn't always work." In other words, sometimes it does. Sometimes it doesn't. When attacked, we're certainly within our rights to respond with force. But where does it end? What is victory? The annihilation of a quarter of the world's people? Yeah, THAT will work.

Victory is easier to measure when you're at war with a nation, rather than an amorphous ideology spread across a vast geographic area. Sully, I don't give a crap about Islam either. Religion in general carries way too much baggage, in my opinion. I'm just trying to be pragmatic. I'd like to keep from radicalizing the moderate Muslims, so at some point the wars stop.

"I'm looking for a president who can effectively do positive things for this country. I'm still waiting."

I got an Uncle Tom and we make fun of him too, but for different reasons.

"He should have spoken about Israeli violence and occupation but nevertheless I feel encouraged."

Actually he did, he discussed his opposition to the settlements, lack of opportunity and the need for a two state solution. I was actually a little surprised that his comments were so direct concerning Israel who, through AIPAC, is trying to force him to only criticize Israel in private and certainly not in front of a Muslim audience. I think he is sort of hinting that AIPAC no longer drives American policy.

Sounds like the Oreo calling the cookie black.

What? You think groping pipes and swabbing decks is better than flipping burgers? Think again!
Nothing more pathetic than an aged man having to physically labor for a living!

Oil Work, like digging ditches ---- is for the habitually immature and the mentally insufficient!
Shit, even in Third World Countries they hire illiterate illegal's to do the work you do!

Have you ever stopped to wonder exactly WHY you are so stupid? To many, it is one of the great mysteries of the universe.

you know I did do that the other day but about 2 mins into it..I forgot what I was thinking about...

carry out a plot to kill 3000 + people by hijacking airlines

3000 people?

That all?

Well, how about America killing one million Iraqis? LOL

Twit.

even give the speech a chance to let the Muslim world cool down a little.

I dont care to scroll back and see who wrote that.

BUt it is incredibly stupid and arrogant and perfectly epitomizes the stupidity and arrogance that surrounds this whole Barack Obama thing we have going on here.

LOL! as if "the great obama has spoken, now all of the stupid little angry muslims will straigthen their shit out and "cool down"..... cuz 'bama said so.

HOLY Christ!

Bwah hah!

People who think everything is about them.

The post was obviously a retort to the Uncle Tom comment.

I'm finishing up watching the speech on the cspan link.

Both the Iranian Prez and bin Laden, who put out their own speeches the last two days, were just handed their asses in typical Obama fashion, and I think it will be seen that way by most Muslim viewers.

Well, how about America killing one million Iraqis? LOL

EXACTLY!

THIS I agree with totally.

It's like the fucker is trying to sell snake-oil to us idiots. LOL

UN says 1,000,000 died in Iraq not that Americans killed them. There is a difference. A fairly large number of those killed were killed by....Muslim extremists.

OK as you can tell, you were just enjoying your Bi-monthly 3 minutes of recognition by me here on the DR. but you had to go and mention the UN as a credible source to back your argument so I am afraid we are ending this session early, after only 2 minutes.

Just as well- you haven't spiced and mashed the chickpeas yet and it's almost lunch rush.

#96 - No, don't try. Because words mean nothing. Which is why you're here every day.

I'm changing my login from Klifferd to Cat_Stevens after this speech. -Kliff

Well, I'm the only Muslim viewer here and I clicked away after a few minutes.

I found it simply disgusting.

In the coming days, you will see the reaction yourself.

It will be of overwhelming indifference.

Jesus Christ on a Pogo Stick there's a fucking tear in the space time continuim, Danni just partially backed "Fredo" on a point.

he also made several comments about islam that are opposite of what I have read..

for instance...islam was spread by the sword and if you paid attention to him you would have thought that they had muslim mother teresa's dispatched from one country to the other when it fact they used those BIG moon like swords to cut off heads instead...

and CNN..this morning starting at 4AM...YES I WAS UP THAT EARLY>..they had a clock at the bottom for the SPEECH COUNTDOWN>...what a bunch of "SHEEPLE" I believe is the way PRAVDA PUT it..

did you notice the silence in the room when he talked about israel's right to exist.

HOWEVER FOR MUCH BIGGER NEWS

BRAD AND ANGIE MAY BE SPLITTING...

OH NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I was obviously retorting the "tap dancing" and "hambone" comment.

Synopsis of Hussein's speech:
America = bad
I'm sorry I am an American.

"if you actually took the number of Muslim Americans, we'd be one of the largest Muslim countries in the world" - Barack HUSSEIN Obama

Change is coming for sure.

"The part of Obama's speech regarding the Palestinian issue is an important step under new beginnings. ... This is the beginning of a new American policy and this policy is creating a new atmosphere to build the Palestinian state." Nabil Abu Rdeneh, a spokesman for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas

"Obama's speech was full of vision, a courageous speech that requires hard work by all parties involved in advancing the Middle East peace process." Shimon Peres, Israel's figurehead president and Nobel peace laureate

"This is the first president we see in the United States that is talking about the Palestinian issue, resolving the Palestinian issue in the first six months of his presidency. Usually, it's in the last two months of the presidency." _ Saad Hariri, leader of Lebanon's parliamentary majority.

"I grew up as a Muslim, and some religious leaders told us to hate other people. So he was speaking directly at me, telling us to stop hating Israelis and Jews. He is the most powerful man in the world and millions of people around the Middle East will see hope in what he said." Hani Ameer, an Iraqi immigrant in London.

but NO...that cant intrude on the ASS KISSING TOUR

there were some good parts

WOMENS RIGHTS AND EDUCATIOn for instance...

it seems a little wierd though when he talked about women wearing the scar things and then talking about thier equal rights...dont equal rights mean they can wear what they want?

He said if they CHOOSE to cover their hair it doesn't make them unequal, but if they are denied an education that makes them unequal.

"if you actually took the number of Muslim Americans, we'd be one of the largest Muslim countries in the world" - Barack HUSSEIN Obama

Damar-Bacha... a fool and a liar.

"Basically he can take his "speech" and roll it up tight and make a suppository of it."

See. Tosser knows what I'm talking about.

What does the Muslim world want from us? To leave them the fuck alone. Unless they can sucker us out of some money, but in general they just want us to mind our own business. Stop trying to "spread demcoracy" by bombing people. Stop pretending to be a peacemaker while paying for Israel's settlements. Stop telling them how to follow their annoying religion. Just stop. We need oil for now and they need to sell it but other than that we should leave on another to our own devices.

The Good and Bad in Obama's Cairo Address [Marc Thiessen]

Let's give President Obama credit for the good things he said in Cairo. He declared he would "relentlessly confront violent extremists who pose a grave threat to our security . . . . And it is my first duty as president to protect the American people." He took on the conspiracy theories about 9/11, declaring "these are not opinions to be debated; these are facts to be dealt with." And he pointed out that al-Qaeda has "killed people of different faiths more than any other, they have killed Muslims." All these are important points.

But much of the rest of what the president said was damaging, wrong, and at times simply shameful.

His speech was rife with moral equivalence. The Iranian Revolution was bad, but so was the U.S. overthrow of Mossadeq in 1953. The Holocaust was bad, but "on the other hand" so is the Israeli occupation of Palestine. The events are not comparable.

Also little noticed was the fact that Obama announced a major shift in U.S. policy in the Holy Land. In 2002, President Bush declared in his Rose Garden address that America would only engage "Palestinian leaders not compromised by terror." In Cairo today, Obama reversed this policy, declaring that Hamas has "to play a role in fulfilling Palestinian aspirations, and to unify the Palestinian people." This is nave and dangerous.

Obama's talk about democracy was all platitudes, and no specifics as if he had to check a box so they he would not be criticized for ignoring the subject. But he made no mention of freedom or democracy in Egypt. President Bush repeatedly called for release of Ayman Nour, the opposition presidential candidate who was jailed for four years. In February, Nour was finally released but is now banned from appearing on TV or running for office. Obama made call for such restrictions to be lifted, no call for greater openness in the country where he was speaking.

He made no mention of democracy in discussing Afghanistan. He made no mention of democracy in discussing Iraq. He made no mention of the advance of freedom in the Middle East that has taken place in recent years, or any commitment to continue it.

Indeed, he said Iraq was a "war of choice" but then said a moment later that Iraq is better off without Saddam Hussein. Well, was it a good choice then? He even invoked Thomas Jefferson to make his point that diplomacy is preferable to war I didn't know Jefferson opposed the war in Iraq.

He said he is committed to helping Iraqis stand on their own. But he failed to mention that they have that opportunity because of the blood spilled by American troops who sacrificed to give them their freedom. He failed to mention that from Iraq and Afghanistan, to Bosnia, Kosovo, and Kuwait, over the past two decades our military has done more to free Muslims from oppression than any power in history. In fact, there was not one word of praise for our troops and what they have done for the people of the Middle East in the entire address.

To the contrary, he threw the men and women of our military and our intelligence community under the bus when he declared, in front of a Muslim audience, that the attacks of 9/11 "led us to act contrary to our ideals." On foreign soil, he accused our intelligence professionals who stopped the next 9/11 of committing torture validating years of al-Qaeda propaganda. He talked about closing GTMO without any defense of the good men and women who run it even though his own attorney general, Eric Holder, has admitted it was a model prison. If he was going to discuss these topics in the Middle East, he at least owed it to our troops and intelligence professionals to say what dozens of investigations have proven: that there was no systematic abuse of detainees at GTMO or anywhere else. Instead, Obama echoed al-Qaeda's calumnies against them and did so in a foreign land. This is unprecedented. It is shameful. And they deserve better.

Nothing more pathetic than an aged man having to physically labor for a living!

I do physically (sic) labor for a living? I'm at work right now. But you are right. My fingers do get pretty tired.

Nothing more pathetic than an aged man having to physically labor for a living!

Actually there is something more pathetic than that. That is someone who goes on a blog and fantasizes that someone else's life is different than what it really is. Now that's pathetic. Get a life, redneckshill

What arguably mattered most about the speech was the president using that credibility and goodwill to challenge Muslims and the Middle East to do more.

A rejection of anti-American attitudes:

"Just as Muslims do not fit a crude stereotype, America is not the crude stereotype of a self-interested empire. The United States has been one of the greatest sources of progress that the world has ever known."

A rejection of 9/11 conspiracy theories:

"I am aware that some question or justify the events of 9/11. But let us be clear: al Qaeda killed nearly 3,000 people on that day. The victims were innocent men, women and children from America and many other nations who had done nothing to harm anybody. And yet Al Qaeda chose to ruthlessly murder these people, claimed credit for the attack, and even now states their determination to kill on a massive scale. They have affiliates in many countries and are trying to expand their reach. These are not opinions to be debated; these are facts to be dealt with."

Support for Israel:

"Around the world, the Jewish people were persecuted for centuries, and anti-Semitism in Europe culminated in an unprecedented Holocaust. Tomorrow, I will visit Buchenwald, which was part of a network of camps where Jews were enslaved, tortured, shot and gassed to death by the Third Reich. Six million Jews were killed -- more than the entire Jewish population of Israel today. Denying that fact is baseless, ignorant, and hateful. Threatening Israel with destruction -- or repeating vile stereotypes about Jews -- is deeply wrong, and only serves to evoke in the minds of Israelis this most painful of memories while preventing the peace that the people of this region deserve.... The Arab-Israeli conflict should no longer be used to distract the people of Arab nations from other problems. Instead, it must be a cause for action to help the Palestinian people develop the institutions that will sustain their state; to recognize Israel's legitimacy; and to choose progress over a self-defeating focus on the past."

Rejection of violence:

"Resistance through violence and killing is wrong and does not succeed. For centuries, black people in America suffered the lash of the whip as slaves and the humiliation of segregation. But it was not violence that won full and equal rights. It was a peaceful and determined insistence upon the ideals at the center of America's founding. This same story can be told by people from South Africa to South Asia; from Eastern Europe to Indonesia. It's a story with a simple truth: that violence is a dead end. It is a sign of neither courage nor power to shoot rockets at sleeping children, or to blow up old women on a bus. That is not how moral authority is claimed; that is how it is surrendered."

Promoting democracy:

"[T]here are some who advocate for democracy only when they are out of power; once in power, they are ruthless in suppressing the rights of others. No matter where it takes hold, government of the people and by the people sets a single standard for all who hold power: you must maintain your power through consent, not coercion; you must respect the rights of minorities, and participate with a spirit of tolerance and compromise; you must place the interests of your people and the legitimate workings of the political process above your party. Without these ingredients, elections alone do not make true democracy."

Religious liberty:

"Among some Muslims, there is a disturbing tendency to measure one's own faith by the rejection of another's. The richness of religious diversity must be upheld " whether it is for Maronites in Lebanon or the Copts in Egypt. And fault lines must be closed among Muslims as well, as the divisions between Sunni and Shia have led to tragic violence, particularly in Iraq. Freedom of religion is central to the ability of peoples to live together. We must always examine the ways in which we protect it."

The rights of women:

"Our daughters can contribute just as much to society as our sons, and our common prosperity will be advanced by allowing all humanity " men and women " to reach their full potential. I do not believe that women must make the same choices as men in order to be equal, and I respect those women who choose to live their lives in traditional roles. But it should be their choice."

These weren't rebukes or condemnations, they were a president issuing a challenge, and forging a new basis for an international relationship. It was also a reminder that Obama, no matter where he is, doesn't talk down to his audiences, or shy away from nuance or complex ideas.---Steve Benen

www.washingtonmonthly.com

"dont equal rights mean they can wear what they want?"

He specifically said it should be their choice.
You obviously listened through a right wing pundit filter who told you what he said.

.islam was spread by the sword

Really...yes really.

Founded by a camel driver in the Arabian desert after he married the woman
who hired him. She was 15 years his senior. After marriage he gave up his
work and studied religion. In 622AD he had to flee from Mecca to the city of
Yathrib in the Arabian Peninsula because of his teachings, of which he had
denounced all other forms of religion. This is known as the official year of
the founding of Islam. In Islam their calendar year begins here with 0
(zero)AH.

He became magistrate of the city and renamed it Medina, meaning "City of the
Prophet". He acquired 12 wives while there. He took in many followers and
combined the religion into the politics. When the Jews rejected his calls to
convert, he turned against the Jews in Medina and elsewhere.

He plundered and looted all caravans passing anywhere within his reach. With
this loot, he and his followers built a large treasury for the city, which
was used to increase his army of followers. Of which he was able too ever
increasingly gain more and more territory. Eventually leading to war with
the city of Mecca, which he defeated, and then he easily took the rest of
the Arabian Peninsula. He was in constant warfare from the time he became
magistrate of Yathrib(Medina), in 622AD, until his death in 632AD. In that
time period of 12 years, Mohammed had conquered the whole of the Arabian
Peninsula.

In the next 12 years, under the next two caliph's or leaders of Islam, the
religion would go on to take Jerusalem, Syria, Egypt, Persia, and
Mesopotamia! ALL BY FORCE AND WARFARE! Let's see that's 24 years of Islam
and 24 years of warfare! This would put the year at 644AD or 24AH.

"On foreign soil, he accused our intelligence professionals who stopped the next 9/11 of committing torture validating years of al-Qaeda propaganda."

Quoting Cheney won't make it true.

He specifically said it should be their choice.

I am hopin he is gonna play N Korea silent , and suddenly issue an ass whippin' - b/c Obama is all about his public image , and I think he will use N Korea situation to try and silence righties like me that want to see some asshole get their ass kicked.
I am not saying obama will bomb N Korea, but I think this one he's gona play it like ( here's his thinking:) - "ok they are gonna do something stupid with the next missle launch, no matter WHAT. So why should I give warnings now only to look weak when jong il doesn't listen to me anyways?
I will just let jong il pull whatever bullshit is inevitable, and then slap him down after"

who knows? maybe Obama will intercept a missle? lob a bomb or two at some ,military installations?

Im HOPING! sincerely HOPING!

"does not succeed"

Certainly if you're the less violent one.

"It was magical inside the great hall of Cairo University, said Emad el-Din Adib, one of the Middle East's famous media personalities.

He was one of the 3,000 people invited to listen to President Obama's speech in person. Adib told an Egyptian TV show, "President Obama's charisma is unquestionable, but it's the substance and depth of his speech that made the hall roar."

Away from the hall, on social networking web sites the reaction was more diverse.

Mina al-Oraibi, a columnist with the London-based Asharq Al-Awsat, said: "Obama mentioned the word peace 29 times and never mentioned terrorism."

She called his choices "smart" and concludes that peace is clearly "his priority." This makes him "the radicals' worst nightmare" she said.

A very excited anchorwoman on Egypt TV told her guests and viewers that she counted 30 applause breaks during Obama's discourse.

She boasted as soon as the speech was over: "They were genuine cheers to a very good speech."

Her guests agreed that the speech was well crafted, clear and "honest" especially on the relationship between the U.S. and Israel.

At one point, a man in audience shouted, "We love you" to Obama. The search is on to confirm the man's identity and to see which point got the hardest applause during the speech.

Dubai-based Al-Arabiya channel showed people gathered to watch on location from major Arab capitals gauging reaction from Beirut, Baghdad and Riyadh.

But perhaps the best reaction came from ordinary Arabs and Muslims plugged to their social media and expressing in real time how they feel about the message and its messenger."

Amazing how many posters here apparently seem to think that NK is a Muslim country.

Yeah, missionaries "converted" the native Americans....then enslaved them, murdered them, took thier lands, took their gold.

Christianity's hands have just as much blood on them as do Islam's.

At least you post that Obama is the snake oil salesman--this country has come to see.

More Muslims heard about American values, and gave what they heard credence, than at any other time in our history.

How many of you commenting have heard the whole speech?

Thought as much.

Between two gulf wars--weren't those UN sanctions bubblehead?

Only technically Smurphy.

The UN has to be pushed and resolutions have to be sponsored.

Guess who.

It's an American habit to use the UN and "coalitions of the willing" to hide behind.

Again Danni--get with the present.

There were very wrong things done in the name of the Christian religion.

But there are not done any more.

Islam radical extremists are continuing Muhammed to convert by the sword.

And the rest of Islam just sits back and watches and finances and applauds.

Not to say there are not moderate voices--just not enough yet.

Islam is the one that needs reforming--to purge themselves of these radicals.

What is truly remarkable, however, is how many posters, supposedly American, prefer war or isolation over peace.

Oh that he is, no doubt at all.

More Muslims heard about American values

American values? "Me see oil! Me grab oil! Me kill folk who can't fight back!"

These values?

How many of you commenting have heard the whole speech?

I clicked away in a few minutes. Heard all I wanted to hear.

"Islam is the one that needs reforming--to purge themselves of these radicals."

Today yes, but it was only fifty years ago that Germany produced Hitler. I don't think religion, per se, is the problem, it is the radicals who use religion to increase and solidify their power.

There are no "moderate voices" because Islam is not war with you.

That is where the lie starts.

Why should anyone like me go and stop two people fighting when it has nothing to do with me?

As your President Bush said, America is not a war with Islam. So there is no point in asking for "moderate muslims" to jelp out, now is there?

I have no idea. I've never lived or worked in a third world country. But I would think that my job would be very difficult for an illiterate.

What is your degree in?

I don't have one.

I would wager that you don't even have a High School Diploma!

I'll take that bet. Everyone reading this, you are a witness. $1,000, redneckshill. You are on.

What's that I see? A tail between the legs running away from me? Well, if you decide you are man enough to keep the wager, I'll be here. But I doubt if you'll grow a set of testicles anytime soon so your money is safe.

Most old ditch diggers, just like rig workers and construction laborers, aren't there because they "love the work", they are there because they lack the education and skill needed to escape the dead end, no advancement job that is the Oil Rig workers future.

All the rig workers I know are here for three reasons: They love the work. They love the pay. They love 26 weeks off a year. I love it when someone who has never been on a rig tries to tell me about it.

"Don't try to describe the ocean if you've never seen it.
Don't ever forget that you just might end up being wrong.

Jimmy Buffet

I said it once and I will say it again ------ any oil platform worker who is above the age of 30 is a LOOSER who can't get better work!

In what manner are we looser? Our waist bands?

I don't know of better work myself. Can you name a better job? I get 26 weeks off a year. I make 6 digits. I have a great dental, health, 401k, and pension plan.

But I'm always looking for better work. Where can I get it, redneckshill?

BTW, outside of the seaman and roustabouts, I'd say 75% of the rig is over the age of thirty.

(see above Jimmy Buffet quote)

You're so strange, redneckshill

If Islam does not reform itself and purge the radical ideology--it will destroy itself.

It's not about religion at all. It is about the fact that over 60% of the world's natural resources fall in Muslim lands.

Where you have oil, you got yourself a fight.

No, Tosser. American values, particularly Liberal ones, such as allowing anti-American pissants like yourself to post on what could easily be a site closed to all but it's own echo.

But since you prefer ignorance and assumption about what was said to actually knowing what was said, well, that only only strikes me as par for the course for your ilk.

You mean like this?

"America is not the crude stereotype of a self-interested empire. The United States has been one of the greatest sources of progress that the world has ever known."

YESTERDAY as he and the king were standing there did anyone else catch the national antems.

GOOD GOD>>...the saudis are the richest people in the world ..

I HAD 6th grade beginners who sounded better than that on BOTH of them.

HEY I could go there and teach them....OOPS>..wait a min...108 yesterday...

Islam is not fighting the US.

If Islam had been fighting... if this has been a true religious war... You would have not believed the damage 2 billion people can do even with their bare hands. LOL

Islam needs no reform and it is not under threat. It is constantly changing as it's environment changes.

when will MUSLIMS MAKE THE SAME STATEMENT???

#163 | Posted by afkabl2

SOME Christians said "enough" but only after a couple of hundred years. Others took a little longer.

Oh, and PS - Make no mistake about it - moderate Muslims need to get off the fence and say "enough" to violence too.

"Are you saying that Christians and the religion is responsible for African slavery?"

No, I'm saying that the Christian religion was spread around the world by conquest not by simple, peaceful conversion.

I have come here to seek a new beginning between the United States and Muslims around the world; one based upon mutual interest and mutual respect
Why didn't he ask them to not teach their youth to fly planes into US buildings and to not blow up US embassay's?

Anything less is rhetoric.

"He really is a despicable piece of shit, Murph..

I've never seen anything like it in my lifetime, and hopefully never will again."

I don't like him. Didn't vote for him. But never seen anyting like him?

Have some perspective. The last guy used an attack on our country to start a war that didn't serve any American objectives at all (Saddam was no threat to us and none of our business and he wasn't the reason we were given for going to war so he's not relevant). He couldn't be bothered to plan the war properly and marginalized anyone who had a problem with that. As an added bonus, he completely undermined the war against our real enemies and turned what should have been a simple punitive expedition in Afghanistan into a hopeless nation building exercise for who-knows-what reason. These massive failures have cost us on many levels and he could give a shit.

To me, failing to have a plan for Iraq best shows what a total piece of shit we had in office. You couldn't be more wasteful with the lives of our military personnel unless you just lined them up against a wall and shot them. Obama can come out and say our military sucks balls every day and he still wouldn't come anywhere near betraying them on the level Bush did. Bush treated our soldiers like garbage. They weren't worth the effort it would take for him to do his job properly.

So to say you've never seen worse than Obama betrays an extreme ignorance. Obama is just a double talking bullshit artist. That makes him typical as far as our national politicians go. The last guy was uniquely selfish and immoral.

Wahabis don't believe in mixing music with national anthems.

SOME Christians said "enough" and some still don't.

Unfortunately Tosser's point isn't completely without a basis in fact.

And, it was at minimum tolerated, if not condoned by Christians for generations.

I figured this would happen when I started the converstation on this...

cant go long at all without blaming us for most of the worlds ills....

damn we must be some rotten mothers........

They don't have an Exam for a simple laborer, the only requirements are that you have two arms, two leg and no ambitions!

That's true, but I'm not sure what this has to do with working in an oil rig. Once again:

Don't try to describe the ocean if you've never seen it.
Don't ever forget that you just might end up being wrong.

Jimmy Buffet

It is a three day testing, interview, and physical process to get hired. I took an Electronic aptitude test of course. There are personality profile tests, personality "color" tests, three levels of interviews, full physical with the doctor and tests to determine physical capablities. Then a three level interview process. For me it was HR, ET superintendent for the company, and a VP of something or another. I don't remember.

I think I know why you talk about things you know nothing about, redneckshill. It's because you don't know anything about anything, but you are too stupid to keep your mouth shut. Thankfully your "insights" are hilarious, so there is some value in your posts.

Now im not including engineers and geologists, but then again, successful people as such don't reside on a rig ...

???

You actually think they take a helicopter home every night and fly back out every day? LOL You're funny

We know what Tosser and his rightwinger pals think (LOL). Others are not so negative. I'm sure Tosser will dismiss all of the following for one reason or another, but here goes -- some English-language media in the region:

hearing those anthems could be called torture of anyone with any musical horizon at all.

BUT ISNT IT NIce that obama took time away to denounce and talk about sargt william long who was MURDERED by a muslim in Arkansas the other day

OOPS>>>>>>WRONG AGAIN...he apparently doesnt give a fuck or he doesnt want that to get in the way of his muslim asskissing

But as illustrated already, you don't have the resources necessary (hence why you are where you are)!

Oh, and Jimmy Buffet Sucks! His garbage sucked 20 years ago and he hasn't done a thing different since!
And here I thought that a grown adult male oil worker was bad enough --- you had to add the pathetic washed up oil rigger who still shags element to it all!

No, I'm saying that the Christian religion was spread around the world by conquest not by simple, peaceful conversion

Please. Pick up a history book. Most of Central and South America was conquered by the Spanish in the name of Their Catholic Majesties, and the indigenous population forced to convert to Christianity.

Tosser--notice I said purge itself of 'radical ideology'.

Ideologies are never "purged" unless you got one powerful guy like Stalin who sends everyone to the Gulag.

Ideologies are rather "countered" with other ideologies.

There 83 different countering ideologies in Islam right now.

The terrorists are only using one... Salafi-ism.

It will die out on it's own when the oil runs out. No need to risk killing oneself over this nonsense.

Danni, can you name countries that were 'conquered' by christians and whose ihabitants were forced to convert to christianity?

Tosser--It is not just the jihad that needs to be purged but the ideologies that are anti-human rights.

There are ideologies that stone women to death, treat them as property, kill gays and behead anyone they disagree with.

Not just the peoples--but their gov't do these things and allow them to occur without any justice to them. And then blame America.

Redneck - WTF do you care what Goat does for a living? You sound like a jackass with this snobby bullshit. If he mops the floors at peepshows for a living that isn't as pitiful to me as being a pretentious douche whose self worth is derived from the prestige of his profession. He seems to like what he does and you just sound like an ignorant ass for insisting otherwise.

And its getting annoying to scroll past your two idiots going on and on about it.

Hey Tosser!

In Obama's speach he said the following:

"It was innovation in Muslim communities that developed the order of algebra; our magnetic compass and tools of navigation; our mastery of pens and printing;"

However, my history book says that algebra was first developed in Egypt and Babylonia in about 1500BC. The magnetic compass in China in about 200 BC and the printing press in Korea even before Guttenburg.

Is there anything muslims actually invented that you know of?

"Danni, can you name countries that were 'conquered' by christians and whose ihabitants were forced to convert to christianity?"

Start with all of S. America, Mexico, western parts of the United States, Ireland, Britain, most of Europe.
Wherever there was Roman Empire the populations were converted.
Wherever Spain or Portugal colonized were converted.

There are ideologies that stone women to death, treat them as property, kill gays and behead anyone they disagree with.

Not just the peoples--but their gov't do these things and allow them to occur without any justice to them.

I think you are over dramatizing.

If you are talking of places like Iran or Saudi, they don't just stone women.. they stone men too. And I don't think they do that anymore anyway.

Most Muslims nations aren't democracies and their legal systems need revamping.

As for the beheadings, the only recent ones I know of were done by the taliban of the TTP in Swat and they are either dead or on the run. So THAT has been taken care of, at least from our end.

I do admit guys should be locked up. They aren't.. not for being gay. But two lesbians were locked up for getting "married" to each other. I fully agree with that.

"I do admit guys should be locked up. They aren't.. not for being gay. But two lesbians were locked up for getting "married" to each other. I fully agree with that."

How is the sixteenth century these days???

Is there anything muslims actually invented that you know of?

Surgery.

The three course meal.

etc etc.

The Muslims were great keepers and translators of knowledge. They collected stuff from as far away as China and improved on it and invented more of it.

If it weren't for Muslims holding on to all them books and stuff, Europe's Renaissance would have been much delayed.

How is the sixteenth century these days???

It's great and free of gay people.

"Is there anything muslims actually invented that you know of?"

You got him on a technicality.

Damnit Danni, I had a rivetting dream last nite that I was a bloody participant in the Charlemagne wars as one of his soldier subjects from that lifetime...

(Charlemagne) also campaigned against the peoples to his east, especially the Saxons, and after a protracted war subjected them to his rule. By forcibly converting them to Christianity, he integrated them into his realm and thus paved the way for the later Ottonian dynasty.

en.wikipedia.org

en.wikipedia.org

Later, Arab and Muslim mathematicians developed algebraic methods to a much higher degree of sophistication. Although Diophantus and the Babylonians used mostly special ad hoc methods to solve equations, Al-Khowarazmi was the first to solve equations using general methods. He solved the linear indeterminate equations, quadratic equations, second order indeterminate equations and equations with multiple variable.

The word "algebra" is named after the Arabic word "al-jabr , الجبر" from the title of the book al-Kitāb al-muḫtaṣar fī ḥisāb al-ğabr wa-l-muqābala , الكتاب المختصر في حساب الجبر والمقابلة, meaning The book of Summary Concerning Calculating by Transposition and Reduction, a book written by the Islamic Persian mathematician, Muhammad ibn Mūsā al-Khwārizmī (considered the "father of algebra"), in 820. The word Al-Jabr means "reunion". The Hellenistic mathematician Diophantus has traditionally been known as the "father of algebra" but in more recent times there is much debate over whether al-Khwarizmi, who founded the discipline of al-jabr, deserves that title instead.

When we say "inventions"... inventions have many fathers. History usually looks at who had the most influence.

And now we'll await the howls from the "damned if he does, damned if he doesn't" crowd...

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. President Barack Obama has issued a statement saying he's "deeply saddened" by a shooting that left one Army private dead and another wounded at a Little Rock recruiting center.

Obama described Army Pvts. William Andrew Long and Quinton I. Ezeagwula as "two brave young soldiers who were doing their part to strengthen our armed forces and keep our country safe."

Long, 23, died in the shooting Monday. Ezeagwula, 18, was wounded.

Obama said he wished Ezeagwula a speedy recovery and offered his condolences and prayers to Long's family

You got him on a technicality.

I think I gave him an adequate answer in post 218.

I said "Surgery" and the "3 course meal".

I will also say the numbers... 1,2, 3, you use everyday.

" the numbers."

That was long before Islam.
What have you losers done since the supreme loser, Mohammad, showed up?

"BUT ISNT IT NIce that obama took time away to denounce and talk about sargt william long who was MURDERED by a muslim in Arkansas the other day"

Yes he also forgot to mention the fourteen year old girl raped and murdered by an American soldier along with the rest of her family.

"Internet rules" as you put it, are moderated blogs, not open forums like this one.

And they are for sissies who like to hear the sound of their won voices.

I am happy being here, CorkyDorky. And it has nothing at all to do with American values.

There are many Pakistani blogs just like this one... better in fact. People aren't kicked out of there either.

Ancient Nuclear War?
by Manuel Sancho
Ancient Nuclear War? There is evidence that the Rama empire (now India) was devastated by nuclear war. The Indus valley is now the Thar desert, and the site of the radioactive ash found west of Jodhpur is around there. Consider these verses from the ancient (6500 BC at the latest) Mahabharata: ...a single projectile Charged with all the power of the Universe. An incandescent column of smoke and flame As bright as the thousand suns Rose in all its splendour... a perpendicular explosion with its billowing smoke clouds... ...the cloud of smoke rising after its first explosion formed into expanding round circles like the opening of giant parasols... ..it was an unknown weapon, An iron thunderbolt, A gigantic messenger of death, Which reduced to ashes The entire race of the Vrishnis and the Andhakas. ...The corpses were so burned As to be unrecognisable. The hair and nails fell out; Pottery broke without apparent cause, And the birds turned white. After a few hours All foodstuffs were infected... ...to escape from this fire The soldiers threw themselves in streams To wash themselves and their equipment. Until the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, modern mankind could not imagine any weapon as horrible and devastating as those described in the ancient Indian texts.

Take it up with Wikipedia, Goatie. The link has been posted. First known reference to a zero was Mesopotamia. Mayans also came up with it independently. You may be thinking of zero as used as a decimal digit. "Positional notation without the use of zero (using an empty space in tabular arrangements, or the word kha "emptiness") is known to have been in use in India from the 6th century."

Lets see your incredible statement again, just for fun though:

"Without the zero, we'd have no math."

LOL. Awesome. The letter to Dr. Math is f'ing adorable though.

The sheeple are really out in force for this guy, this points to the poor education system the US currently has. The 20 and 30 year olds are certainly lacking in any historical or financial perspective as to what chaos such an individual can do to the country and world. I give it 2 years and people (except the Media) will see how inflation devalues their money. Attempting to raid the government coffers will get a return of zero - since there will be no money left at that time. Thirty years maybe, unless we fall into a Marxist Regime. The majority populace (and media) gets what it asked for, and the price can be heavy.

The people of the Indian sub-continent were the first to use it as a place-holder (re-read your own wiki link you spoke of in your 278)

I haven't seen where Johnson said "I would hope that a wise white man with the richness of his experiences would, more often than not, reach a better conclusion" than a black, asian, or hispanic man, have you?

Lonnie

In almost every post, yes.

Ok Corky,

Let's be totally honest here. If Johnson did say that, he was wrong. Just as wrong as if Judge Sotomayor used it. There is absolutely no difference between the tastelessness of the line used and just because a Latino used it doesn't make it any more right or just.

Lonnie

Brad Steiger has been writing about nuclear bombs being set off for over 40 years in ancient Atlantis

I guess we don't have to wonder about what happened to Atlantis anymore.

More importantly, I just got the last of my parts ordered, last emails answered, and handover notes penned. 3 more hours and this two week hitch is over! But I still have to wait until the helicopter gets here in the morning until I can leave the rig.

Congrats Goat. Now time to be launched into space to drill that comet before it hits.

OK, Lonnie, let's be totally honest here. Tiny Johnson posts racist rhetoric like it might disappear someday if he doesn't get it all in type.

Ms Sotmayor, on the other hand, could have once chosen a better word in a sentence that has been pulled out of context.

There is an absolute difference.

"I guess we don't have to wonder about what happened to Atlantis anymore."

other than realise their technology was probably far more advanced than ours?:>)

Bullshit Corky, there is no difference. Sotomayor said almost the exact statement back in '94. She could have chosen better words only works if she said it one time. She damn well knew what she was saying was racist. She'd have to since she's a judge. If anything, Johnson may not know his words may have been racist because we don't know his education level. I'm more willing to give Johnson a pass because I don't know.

As for the context issue, what's the context then. I can't think of a context that would make that statement less infuriating. It's funny that you mention context, you guys do it all of the time. You blow things out of context on a daily basis and have the audacity to yell foul when someone else does it back to you.

I watched last night and thought it was an excellent speech and was well delivered.
I agreed with most of what he said.
I was conscious of how and when the crowd responded positively and when they remained silent.

I only hope the points he made and the goals he stated were not rhetoric or hyperbole.

"The great masses of the people will more easily fall victims to a big lie than to a small one,"

That sounds like the Bush/Cheney/Rove/Rice/Rumsfeld mantra they adopted after 9-11.

Well, it's official. Don't visiting foreign dignitaries receive gifts. What did Obama receive in Cairo. Rumor has it that he received a rag for his head that he could wear in public to enjoy his sense of identity with his Islamic "brothers."

Come to think of it, blacks in the U.S., have through usage introduced the word "brother" to demonstrate racial identity and affinity, and Islamics are largely not blacks. In fact, some Islamics were slave traders and still keep slaves, and are vicious to blacks as in Darfur, so another term is needed to describe those united under Islam.

Hm.

One of the five pillars is Shahadataan or Kalima. This is the declaration or testimony of faith. The declaration itself is very simple and it goes as follows: "I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His [Prophet] ......

How about "Shahadah?"

Way to go, Barack. Er, Barack Hussein. We're finally hearing about your antecedents, your identity, your loyalties, matters that were suppressed during the campaign.

Well, Shahadah, "Insh'allah."

The is no place for white liberals in Obama's vision of America.

Well pac, it's always a find to learn that there is a scholar such as you, searching for what he believes are historical analogies.

That distraction aside, and dealing with current affairs rather than history, do you think that the original allusion was applicable?

#349 | Posted by aclusux at 2009-06-05 09:34 AM

The is no place for white liberals in Obama's vision of America.

This is the type of expostulation we would expect from a bigoted white racist, who doesn't know "his place," nor the place of others in this society.

It's time for you to atone for your sins by doing penance and not by being uppity. You uppity whites are a bane on this country.

It is your discriminatory rejection of all things Muslim that causes you to be ignorant of Muslim values, and Islam, honky, means "submission."

For all of those years, Rosa Parks and other noble domestics, who worked (and slaved of course doing manual labor) in white homes, were sent to the back of the bus. Now whitey, it's your turn. Yeah whitey, we've got grievances, and we're going to exact revenge for the many indignities people of black ancestry suffered in the United States, indignities that continue to this day.

The low regard, whitey, in which you hold blacks and attempt to lord it over them, is still evidenced in affirmative action programs. It's inherent in your attitudes. What do you do? You add points to black scores as if blacks need them. Instead you should deduct enough points from white scores to deprive them of the advantage of being born white, reduce advantage rather than implying that blacks just can't qualify because they are somehow inferior.

And just as we used to have a hierarchy within black culture, where those with the most white traits, light colored skin, "good" hair, were considered better, now it is reversed. It is decreed that the lighter a white's skin, the uglier he is, the less kinky or curly his hair, the uglier he is, the bluer his eyes, the uglier he is. Black is what is beautiful now, honky.

Now you, you ashy complexioned, blue-eyed honky, who probably don't got no rhythm, and ain't hep, don't know sharp street talk, it's you turn to recognize you superiors. So you right but you wrong, whitey. There be a place for white liberals. It be to serve others, do all that complicated work that unnatural folks do, while natural folks lead the life. So honky, there be a place for whitey. It just not be a place at the leadership table. It be whitey's turn to serve. Payback is great.

And we ain't as dumb as whitey, so you ain't never gettin' back in the saddle and controlling things. You be stupid enough to surrender leadership, got no fire you your belly, and no sense of self-worth, need to explain and justify yourselves all the time, well now honky, you got your place. There always be a place for lefty whiteys. It just might not be the place that lefty whiteys want. But they gave it up, we didn't even need to take it.

And don't forget racist bigot white honky, different strokes for different folks. There be people who enjoy and are exhilarated by all sorts of different things. There are people who like to be bound up and beaten, and there be those who like to bind them up and beat them. So what be unpleasant for you, you hating bigot, might just be ecstatic for white honky leftist liberals. Their needs are met.

Look at white honky liberal Chris Matthews. He look at Obama, and look at Obama and his wife together, and he feels pleasant tingling on his legs. Maybe even gets off but is ashamed to say he has an actual orgasm.

Different strokes for different folks white racist hate-spewing honky bigoted Nazi fascist. You no-good descendant of slave holders;. Oops. That's Obama. Er. Ah.

Lightn up Johnson

Yea... Lets all go live the 13th century lifestyle.....

Mark my words....

We will never have peace as long as there are people on this planet who worship islam....

islam will always be distorted and used as an excuse to kill people....

Are all the killers going to put down their AK47's now?

I think not.

#36 | Posted by cbob

Are you really that naive? The ONLY way the terrorists begin to stop killing innocent westerners is if we pull all of our bases out of the Middle East. This is why Obama's speech is so meaningless. They attacked us for years because of our presence there and they won't stop until either we're gone or they're dead.

Now, if you want to take the position that we should pull all of our bases, despite those countries wanting us there and our strategic advantages from being there, then go right ahead. But, you must have some kind of faith in the perceptions that the speech left, because it isn't going to change one goddam thing. Except America will look weaker because of it.

I think Johnson is perhaps the most clear thinking poster on the DR. I cannot remember the last time anyone INCLUDING YOU took johnson on ( I mean the DR poster) and factually refuted him on his assertions - you all just usually dismiss him with insults b/c you cannot handle it.

Oh, like Christians who murder doctors.

Like Christians who blow up federal buildings.

#67 | Posted by danni

Danni, your analogies suck ass. You are comparing a very select few of the population to an entire army of devoted killers. And just for the heck of it, TV was not any Christian. You just want to add him into that group to fit your ill-suited analogy. None of it worked.

Well, how about America killing one million Iraqis? LOL

Twit.

#95 | Posted by Tosser

If you can tell us when that happened maybe you could get an honest answer. But, since your question was dishonest you don't deserve a response. It has been proven over and over again that nowhere near 1,000,000 Iraqis have died due to US forces. Yet, hacks like yourself continue to print it like it's true.

The UN sez it did.

Bullshit. And if they did they have been proven wrong by people who actually are on the ground and who know. It certainly would not be the first time that the UN blew something way out of proportion. i.e. global warming. Get over it, Tosser, a million Iraqis have not lost their lives.

#360 | Posted by everlong

What they said

Christianity's hands have just as much blood on them as do Islam's.

#153 | Posted by danni

Okay, Danni, let's say that is true. But it just so happens that Islam is murdering people today in a civilized world, where most people have evolved from the atrocities incurred in the past. The Christian Crusades were over a thousand years ago and we don't do that stuff anymore. While the crusades were happening, Muslims were spilling just as much blood in the name of Allah. The difference is we stopped. They have never stopped. There is no comparison to Christian's spilling blood to Muslims doing the same. If they would just venture out a little bit into the real world they may find that they can live among it without having to behead people for not converting.

P.S. Don't compare Christianity to Islam anymore. There is no comparison.

No, I'm saying that the Christian religion was spread around the world by conquest not by simple, peaceful conversion.

#184 | Posted by dann

And you're still wrong. Yes we had the crusades, but those were largely battles to protect or recapture the Holy Land. Crusaders did not travel the countryside converting people on threat of death. They went out where either their holdings were in danger or they were looking for new lands to conquer. Most of their time was spent battling Muslims over certain land. If a crusader was captured by a Muslim he was offered to convert to Islam with a sword to his throat.

How many times did they attack us during the Bush years? three, four thousand? How many American soldiers died under Clinton? Three? Four? How many soldiers died under Bush? Five, Six thousand?

Try these. Clinton still leads.

Reagan: 17,201 8 years
2150/year

Bush 41: 6,749 4 years.
1,687/year

Clinton: 7,500 8 years.
938/year

Bush 43: 8989 6 years.
1,498/year

Sorry, you're incorrect.
Those are the numbers from your link.
Ignoring 2007 for Bush 43.
Ignoring the size of the military and the actual PERCENTAGE which works even better for Clinton than the raw numbers.

President: SOY-EOY:
Reagan 1981-1988
Bush 41 1989-1992
Clinton 1993-2000
Bush 44 2001-2006

* January's been added to the successive President in each case because of the statement of deaths/year not lining up with the terms of the Presidency.

Evershort got brain short-circuit....

Don't compare Christianity to Islam anymore. There is no comparison.

You are right Evershort. When Muslims kill enough people as the Christians have (for example, 6 million jews plus 2 a-bombs plus Dresden firebombed, plus one million Iraqis), THEN we should compare.

Right now the Muslims have killed a thousand time less people than various Christians have.

No comparison at all.

Crusades, Crusades.... you lost the Crusades, you Christian Fundo loser.

Don't you know "history is written by the victors"? LOL

So as a Muslim and since Muslims won the Crusades, we say Christianity was spread by the sword. And that is that.

Now go make your Iranian master a pina-colada, you domestic servant. LOL

I know why you hate Muslims... because you and your family work for Iranians as domestic help as you said so long ago.

Suck it up.

I heard this from someone:

the turks got rid of the crusaders.
the british got rid of the turks.
the israelis got rid of the british.

history?

history?

More or less.

Thanks man,
now I have to make a pina colada,LOL

now I have to make a pina colada

No no... that's Evershort's job.

He works as a domestic servant for a rich Iranian family. Dusting, mopping floors, that kinda thing.

Yes, really.
