Quinnipiac just released new polling data showing that Americans firmly reject affirmative action policies based on race. According to the poll released today

American voters say 55 - 36 percent that affirmative action should be abolished, and disagree 71 - 19 percent with Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayer's ruling in the New Haven firefighters' case, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.
More than 70 percent of voters say diversity is not a good enough reason to give minorities preferential treatment in competition for government or private sector jobs, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University survey of more than 3,000 voters finds.

Among the specific questions comes this interesting breakdown. It seems that only a plurality of black voters support the practice in government while the majority of Hispanics polled firmly oppose it.

Oppose 70 - 25 percent giving some racial groups preference for government jobs to increase diversity. Black voters support it 49 - 45 percent while Hispanic voters are opposed 58 - 38 percent;

Update: Rasmussen has just released its polling numbers today. They report an erosion of support for Sotomayor with far less than a majority in support of her confirmation.
Forty-one percent (41%) now favor confirmation of Sotomayor while 36% are opposed. A week ago, those figures were 45% and 29% respectively.
Unchanged from last week is the fact that most Democrats favor confirmation while most Republicans are opposed. Those not affiliated with either major party are now evenly divided. Last week, unaffiliateds leaned modestly in favor of confirmation.

Rasmussen finds some other seemingly conflicting trends.

Forty-eight percent (48%) hold their views less firmly. Among this group, Democrats are more likely to say they Somewhat Approve while Republicans Somewhat Disapprove.

Sixty-nine percent (69%) of Republicans now view Sotomayor as politically liberal, a view shared by 50% of unaffiliateds. However, 53% of Democrats view the Supreme Court nominee as politically moderate. The partisan divide on this question has increased significantly.

I watched that talk as well and found it very interesting. I believe that talk was given years ago; prior to the use of the touch screen that some of the political commentators popularized in the last election.

I've found many of the talks to be very interesting; some even compelling. But the most compelling aspect of TED.com is its existence. It is a way of sharing the ideas, accomplishments and personalities of some of our leading scientists, engineers, entertainers, business people, inventors, etc. with the general public; at no cost!

If Sotomayor, reputedly a devout Catholic, would vote to reverse Roe v. Wade, I'd weigh the equities, and support her appointment as accomplishing a great good despite her being personally obnoxious, lacking judicial temperament, and being a devoted racist member of La Raza, a Mexican and not Puerto Rico connected racist group that is acting to secure "The Reconquista," the transfer of sovereignty of the American Southwest to Mexico. With the demographics of Southern California being what they are, this would result in the repatriation of many Mexican nationals..

Such villains as Tiller the Killer and his aspiring replacement, who would be "Next," is his buddy LeRoy (the heartless) Carhart, M.D., a Nebraskan, who has previously worked with Tiller the Killer, and aspires to continue Killer Tiller's work. The M.D. license is not only a license to heal nowadays, but also a license to kill. Maybe Sotomayor could put a stop to that horror.

According to members who attended, Emanuel acknowledged that even moderate Republicans might not support Obama's health care plan in the end, but he said that the White House wanted to maintain an open dialogue throughout the process and that some of their ideas might be included.

The president stopped by for about 15 minutes. He listened to the Republicans' ideas for overhauling the health care system and agreed to review an energy bill authored, in part, by Rep. Tim Murphy (R-Pa.).

Didn't [Keith] stop by the other day and mention something about getting ready to have some new surgery or something?

Yes, it was about 2 weeks ago he mentioned it and it was suppose to be quite a serious operation but, if successul, would allow him to walk once again. I asked him to keep us posted as to the date was he was scheduled for surgery. If Keith has just gone through the surgery he may not have wanted to say anything on DR until it was all over with and he knew the outcome. Plus, if now post-op, he may be in ICU recuperating. Does anyone here keep in touch with him?

I know quite a few on here don't believe in God and/or prayer, but whatever "good karma" to you can send Keith's way, I think he'll need all he can get and would appreciate it too. Let's all keep our fingers crossed for him. He hasn't had it easy.

I was glad to see UW beat Florida last night to take the national championship. It was a good game. I felt bad for my sweeties Megan Bush and Stacey Nelson though. But my other girl Salling pulled thru as she did the whole tournament. And Chartres was just a spark plug. She just kept getting on base when it was needed to jump start her team. Pew Research estimates Muslims in the U.S. at about 2.3 million, less than half of your highly regarded Newsweek quote. That would be in the neighborhood of less than 1%. There aren't and have never been 'pictures' on Private Pilot's licenses (offically "certificates", not licenses). The only thing that's ever renewed is a Class 3 Medical Certificate. I love to play holdem no limit poker. Bush's 'shuffle' might be like me calling an all in bet with 2 4 offsuit and AAK on the board, hoping they will magically turn into a pair of Aces. AFTER I've let my stack dwindle down to almost nothing by playing bad starting hands all tourney and chasing hand after hand and losing everyone of them.

By the way, I've won several large tourneys with 500+ players online in the last year, and one 300+ player live event. Earned my bragging rights LOL

I"ve lost more online tournaments than I can count to rag hands that hit 2% shots.

I've given up playing for money online. Seen too many things that give me pause, and too many drunk idiots who get lucky. I'll take my few grand in winnings over the last couple of years and call it a day. No more real money for me.

Been playing at FullTilt for a couple of years. Even there I have my doubts. I never played the stakes these cheats did, but still, something's fishy.

Knocked out Woods and got an additional $25 bounty for that. LOL
