The argument for me about ratings is this: Popularity does not equal quality. It's a pretty simple reality to comprehend. Sex sells. Sensationalism sells. Pulitzer-prize-winning investigative journalism might sell, if it's got sex and sensationalism.

So suggesting that Fox gets better ratings than CNN shows that... Fox gets better ratings than CNN. It doesn't mean it's brilliant or right (though it is Right) or smart. It _might_ be those things, but there's no obvious link from popularity to quality. (Ditto for Rush Limbaugh. When Stern was popular in his first wave, people were asked why. In some huge poll, it was determined that most listeners tuned in to hear what outrageous thing he would say next, not because they were waiting for something brilliant or amazing.) Maybe Fox News is more _entertaining_ than CNN. (Read Neil Postman's Amusing Ourselves to Death--not about Fox vs. CNN, but about the idea that we go wrong when we expect our information sources to entertain us. Brilliant book.)

LOL First used email about that time too. At first it was just internal to MCI, but later public. (anyone remember when email first came out and there was a charge for it!?!)

Graduated from BBSs to GEnie (A general electric product like a national BBS). Flirted with Prodigy and CompuServe, but didn't like either one. All the while I used the internet at work (still pre-WWW days)
