Ford, the only major U.S. automaker not in bankruptcy, is increasing production this quarter and next as it seeks to take away sales while domestic competitors are under court protection.

ouch - - - Obama may well get his FIRST taste of the free market on MY dime???

yikes - -
how the hell do they expect the Harvard elites to RULE us commoners if they don't understand econ 101???

gee . . is it fair to hit your competition while they're down??

Gov buys thousands of vehicles every year.

Will they buy Ford if the bid is lower...or will they patronize Government Motors ?

This could also be a strategic mistake on behalf of Ford. Making cars is different than selling cars.

gee . . is it fair to hit your competition while they're down??

I hope you were being sarcastic.

I hear more and more people saying that they will not buy a GM car.. and the consumer seems to be left out of the mix by the Obama auto team..

Ford is unquestionably going to benefit from this.. I can't foresee any other outcome.

And we haven't finished bailing out GM yet.. their sales will not rise to match Fords.. they'll be building the modern equivalent of circus clown cars, and the governments answer will of course be to pour more money into them. GM is now the Amtrak of the automotive industry.

And wait until congress swaggers into (and they will) the decisions on what plants will stay open and which will close.. which suppliers get preference.. it will be a circus.

Obama needs to tie the hands of Ford - just to make competition fair.

Be Well.

I love my Ford pickup.

The day of politically motivated car buying has arrived.

Buy a fleet of GM cars and get a cabinet position anyone?

How about an ambassadorship?

Or, support my campaign, wink, wink, and I will make sure you get a great deal on your next fleet purchase!

Ah, the beauties of socialism!

"This could also be a strategic mistake on behalf of Ford. Making cars is different than selling cars."

Prolix:

In case you haven't seen any TV lately, Ford is advertising that it has in-house financing available, which the other automakers haven't been doing. That's a big difference. What remains to be seen is how wisely Ford uses its financing funds; if they make good loans to responsible buyers, that'll be a real strength. I would hope that they've keyed their production forecasts to the amount of orders they can realistically expect from the loan capital they have on hand, or to which they have access. If that's the case, they're way ahead of the other two domestic players.

I still get sick every time I hear the words "President Obama"...fuck him and his policies...and thanks to all who supported him we will all sink together.Ford will kick ass just like any other smart company who hasn't licked the ass of this wanna-be.A 31 year old with no experience in anything related to the car industry is going to run/fix it? That should make everyone feel confident. After his four years it will be apparent he had no business being in the office and will go down as the worst ever. Its clear to me now that the left's hated for Bush and Republicans so was blinding, they would have voted for Mickey Mouse if he was the choice.I wish I had that choice,I would have went with Mickey
Suckers

Any promiscuous teenager could give advise to any industry looking for a bailout. Ford already knew what GM and Chrysler are finding out. The government has clamidia and once you get in bed with them it is very difficult to get rid of the end result, despite all the good times.

I've always been a Ford man and I say, "GOOD FOR FORD."

Ford sucks, and its NFL team sucks too.

Buying Ford stock at $1.50 was the best move I ever made. I still prefer Japanese and Korean cars though.

I say, "GOOD FOR FORD."

Let me know when you want to buy a classic F150. An enthusiastic buyer is always a delight.

It does does run very well.

and yet, they are working overtime to build Camaros...

Exactly--GM is now Government Motors--and if they can pass laws to promote their stake in GM they will.

And to the detriment of Ford.

As for financing--GMAC has financing and owned by the gov't too.

As for the people who are going to run GM--they will be politicians--not auto people.

Afterall--it is Government Motors--gotta employ the politicians and crony sidekicks and contributors to Democrats.

Anyone competing with Amtrak? No.

That's what happened under Nixon after the gov't took over the railroads--turned it into Penn Central and then took it as Amtrak. They were supposed to be self sustaining within three years.

That was 40 years ago.

All gone and running a 1.6 billion dollar deficit.

The CEO in charge of Amtrak makes more than the POTUS.

This is the end game for GM--taken over by the gov't and then killed by the gov't--forever paid for by the taxpayer.

And they will destroy Ford and Chrystler so they can promote Government Motors.

bastards...

OZARK - I have a '49 Ford one ton with a bed lift and the flathead V8. Kick ass truck. Double clutch and the old manual brakes. Its only primed but straight. I have to say the '56 Crown is my favorite car. Mopar put out the best of muscle cars. The 'cuda is awesome as is the roadrunner. I'll give GM the 442 and they did make some damn nice outfits in their time.

I will say I wish Tucker was alive to see this shit go down.

Yeah I can see all kinds of people and clubs buying up Toyotas for "classic" cars.

How about them Kia's? Oh--let's honor VW's--that's the one.

Oh let's save Chinese cars for classic car shows--they'll really sell.

If you have an old classic--you will see that go up in value.

I raced cudas, small block. Tuned for my buddies with the 383-440. Wanted a hemi so bad.

My dad ran the service department at C-P dealer. I'd pick up some hours just hanging out. Drive the new ones coming in down the block for $2 of gas.

Jim Keehn had two sons older than I, and a Hemi GTX came in and they grabbed the keys and didn't come back. Their dad was so kind. And so rich. The dealership was 4 miles from the Chrysler Plant in Fenton.

Mine's an 85 with FI 302 bored 60, and AOD. 355 gears and I get 16.5 on the highway coming due north up US63 (200 miles) and there's no shortage of hills.

If you have an old classic...

Yeah...

I have watched the auctions, and $100,000 for a car is amazing but then so are some of the cars.

What I have is a Half Ton Lap Dance.

Every time I think she loves me I have to shell out some more cash.

I have an '88 Bronco with a FI 302 stock. I love that rig. My next F-150 will be a '70s model, (preferable early '70s with the circular headlights.) FI is nice but a carburetor is better in my mind. With the old ones checking something like a thermostat is just simple. As I'm sure you know this should be a very easy procedure and it only gets worse from there.

Let me know when you want to buy a classic F150. An enthusiastic buyer is always a delight.

It does does run very well.

Mine is a 93 F150 XLT extra cab 302, 150k miles. Rear antisway, o/drive rear end, very nice ride.

F-150 with a 300ci straight six and four speed on the floor. 20 mpg, pull anything, smooth ride, in 17 years it only needed 4 batteries, 1 alternator, 1 starter motor ($17 & ten minutes, 1 fuel pump & 1 water pump. Best truck ever made.

My favorite truck is the 57 GMC. Good looking, 283, granny gear on a 4 speed. Sold before I got there.

I used to fix up Chevys early 70 models. Wanted a 68 4 wheeler but that was another elusive venture.

Lots of Fords down in the Ozarks.

"Any promiscuous teenager could give advise to any industry looking for a bailout. Ford already knew what GM and Chrysler are finding out. The government has clamidia and once you get in bed with them it is very difficult to get rid of the end result, despite all the good times."

To avoid VD, learn how to spell the disease. That way the health pamphlet makes sense.

chlamydia...sorry but didn't see you try to spell it.

As I am not as well informed in the ways of STDs as such an educated person as yourself.

My favorite truck is the 57 GMC

My favorite truck:

The one that pulls out at night on the freeway 10' from my front end with no cars behind me for 2 miles to
pass another truck on the 17th steep uphill grade in a row (after pulling out in front of me barely missing my front bumper)
slows down to 40 yet again
refuses to get over while we all go 40 mph on the freeway
rides down the other side of the long hill 5'from my back bumper only to try to scratch my front bumper with no cars behind me and
passes the next truck going on the next uphill stretch
slows down to 40 ... again only to
ride my bumper all the way downhill 'cause I can't get over 'cause the slow trucks are bunched up on the right who I then see
nearly hitting my back bumper this time as he pulls out and turns on his signal at the same time
theen gets pulled over by the big state trooper who 'shotgunned' him with radar just as he passed me when I could finally get over
lit him up like a Christmas tree
gives the trucker a huge ticket for doing 85 in a 70 mph zone
costing said trucker far more than the 32.4 seconds he might have saved
but now will be having a jovial conversation with a trooper who's had the same thing done to him
while he drove the family car over hilly freeways at night

Yea. Like fine wine

Ok then what happens? What are you going to do about it?

they are working overtime to build Camaros...

#16 | Posted by northguy3

Read the comparo (Camaro vs Challenger vs Mustang) in the latest edition of Car and Driver. Both the Camaro and the Challenger came up sorely lacking against the Mustang.

Question to ask, what is really the need for these retro-styled muscle cars? They are nothing more than bling, eye-candy, look-at-me LOOK-AT-ME, kewl factor. The car defining the person. "I got this kewl car: you don't so you are the one that is lacking."

Been there, done that. I have grown up.

Let me see GM and Chrysler owe the Fed a boatload of money, if Ford ends up hurting the profits of the other two, the Feds may not get their money back.

I see Congress getting involved to make sure that this scenario is not likely to happen.

Fords future maybe in jeopardy.

Amtrak is /was not penn Central Murph....PC turned into CONrail, along with several other rust belt bankrupt RR companies...The PC was the biggest banruptcy at the time....Conrail turned it around eventually and sold to private companies ten years ago for billions....

What did not help the RRs was the fact that the gov would not let them abandon the unprofitable lines....

where was the bailout money for the typewriter manufacturers??

Look at the Post Office, did they welcome competition? No, they did everything in their power to get Congress to stop outsiders from getting into the mail and package delivery service. As it is no company can do mail deliver, they can only do package delivery.

Now that GM and Chrysler has a direct connection to Congress will they do the same, my guess is probably.

some economists have been saying ford will go down later this year - time will tell, i suppose. i love my little ford escort wagon - may be time to get it back on the road - runs fine - 300,000+ miles.

Ford sucks...I'll never buy a Ford.

Rail Passenger Service Act
In the late 1960s, the end of passenger rail in the United States seemed near. First had come the requests for termination of services; now came the bankruptcy filings. The legendary Pullman Company became insolvent in 1969, followed by the dominant railroad in the Northeastern United States, the Penn Central, in 1970. It now seemed that passenger rail's financial problems might bring down the railroad industry as a whole. Few in government wanted to be held responsible for the extinction of the passenger train, but another solution was necessary.

In 1970, Congress passed and President Richard Nixon signed into law, the Rail Passenger Service Act. Proponents of the bill, led by the National Association of Railroad Passengers (NARP), sought government funding to assure the continuation of passenger trains. They conceived the National Railroad Passenger Corporation (NRPC), a hybrid public-private entity that would receive taxpayer funding and assume operation of intercity passenger trains. The original working brand name for NRPC was Railpax, but shortly before the company started operating it was changed to Amtrak.

And Conrail did make a train load of money--but they still have shared assests--

Interesting stuff on RR's.

The only thing that will do right by Ford is that all of their dealerships will still be open.

When you want to market something you have to have a place to do it from.

GM and CH are closing 3200 dealerships between them.

But watch Obama and car czar run by cronies and some 31 yo infant who have never run a car business or any other busniess for that matter.

Watch for the car czar to implement some laws thru congress to smother and kill Ford and their markets.

That is what I've been saying all along.

Just look at the dealerships being closed, the ones that have the least pull with Washington and the same will go with the Manufacturing Plants.

I love my old ladies GM. A Pontiac Soltice GXP with 325 HP and 315 ft/lb. torque via a GM Performance upgrade..

Chevy V8 engine....who'd a thought?

Yup, that great American, Zora Arkus Duntov.
Father of the Corvette and the small block Chevy V8.

Zora was born Zachary Arkus in Belgium on Christmas Day, 1909. His father was a Russian-born Jewish mining engineer, and his mother, also Russian Jewish, was a medical student in Brussels. [1]

After the family returned to their hometown of Leningrad, Zora's parents divorced. His mother's new partner, Josef Duntov, another mining engineer, had moved into the household. Even after the divorce, Zora's father continued to live with the family, and out of respect for both men, Zora and brother Yura took on the last name of Arkus-Duntov.[1]

General Motors

Zora joined General Motors in 1953 after seeing the Motorama Corvette on display in New York. Perhaps it was just fate that Zora happened to be among the thousands of people who attended the GM event. Zora found the car to be visually superb, but was disappointed with what was underneath.

yes the NARP -Amtrash Murphy...I forgot to mention the other half of my thoughts on this somewhat related auto-highway discussion...Which could lead to another diversive discussion - socialist highways built by your taxes for the use of private citizens and corporations (think subsidized trucking ROWs built with our $)But then I digress ...Amtrak was born due to the fact the the mail contracts that e the US post office stopped on the private RR's passenger trains , of which such basically subisized them throughout the 60's. The private RR companies werre not allowed to abaondon the money losing routes of their passenger trains due to such nonsense and thus were really hemmoraging money...which GM now calls "cash burn"...Of course the creation of the interstate highways did not help in that most people stopped taking trains intercity...then in 1970 the NARP came along....

I forgot to mention that our gov made the private RR carry the mail on thier passenger routes...up to the late sixties...68? if I remember - too lazy to look it up now.

Hey, Zat, I'm gonna be in Austin for a few days...where's the best bar-b-que in those parts?....And any other valuable info you may want to impart.

I had a 1968 Corvette: 350 HP when it wasn't throwing all the fan belts on the ground or catching fire.

The American voter turned away from hard choices in the 30's. WWII's decades-long unfairness bred sloth and complacency. The last straw was rejecting reality in the 70's.

I'm glad I'm old and my two kids are well-educated and debt-free. They shoot well, too.

I was telling my daughter today while we had lunch after she bought a new VW TDI Diesel (EPA 41 MPG highway). I was going for sufficient seed money to avoid what Tom Clancy calls "The middle class trap" but I really didn't want "idle rich" kids, either.

Besides, what is life without struggle?
It isn't.
