There is an enormous battle going on in the GOP right now. One one side seems to be the pundits and non or former elected officials like Liddy, Limbaugh, Gingrich, Malkin, etc. who have decided to take the lowest road possible with their howls of racism, sexism, calling the nominee "dumb", and so on.

On the other side are the more responsible conservatives fighting for the survival of their party and to keep it from sliding further into the hands of the aforementioned loons.

People like Steele, Cornyn, Hutchinson, Hatch, and others who recognize that the country is sick and tired of that kind of ugly rhetoric. And they understand full well that unless they prevail, the GOP could very become a permanent 20-25% political minority.

This is why I can't tell people now that I am really a true conservative (apparently my idea of what true conservative means seems to differ from what the GOP's idea is.) So I just say I am an independent. In the real world a true conservative is 75% true independent anyway.

This is why the voting shifts and vexations always come from the so-called independents. There are 25% who will vote repub no matter what and there are 25% that will vote dem no matter what. The other 50% (who are the true americans IMHO), vote based on issues and persons.

I never thought I would see the day that the party of Lincoln and William F Buckley (god rest his blessed soul) would stoop to such knuckle-dragging incompetence.

Don't feel your position on the political spectrum has changed simply because the party normally associated with it has fucked up badly. I.E., it is possible to be a conservative and not a Republican.

Maybe that's a good thing. Nature hates a vacuum. Look for the rise of more powerful third parties. The dems and repubs are too complacent in power. They no longer respect of fear the people.

One key reason the Democrats won big last year is that, whatever else you think of Obama, he delivered a more positive message, and called the country to a higher purpose.

Ronald Reagan used to do that for Republicans. But there hasn't really been anyone step up to fill that role for them since.

Right now the loudest voices seem to be the extreme ones, appealing to the lowest common denominator. Until the GOP can recapture that Reagan spirit again, they have very real problems. I don't see anyone yet on the horizon that can do it, but IMO they need to take a long, hard look at themselves and find someone.

The original conservatives,the right wing of the eagle, believed in the conservation of the Rights Of the People and the conservation of the nations resources, natural or otherwise. The left wing of the eagle were the problem solvers. The left genuinely wanted to solve all the nations problems. Sometimes, in the course of solving problems the rights of the people are infringed upon. This is why we need a balance of power. Acts like the patriot act were designed to solve problems. They also infringed on the peoples rights. We have tons of bad legislation. Anyone notice we have repealed the Patriot act yet.

The right's yelps convince me Sonia Sotomayor would make a great justice. Surely her role in La Raza militates no more against her than would the unlikely case of Clarence Thomas belonging to the NAACP.

But she'd be the sixth Catholic on that bench. That's a minyan. One question for her confirmation hearing: If your friendly confessor says rule the Vatican way in a reproductive rights matter or we withhold your wine and wafer, what do you do?
