Continually being redeployed over and over again into combat zones in Iraq has taken a terrible toll on our military.

The soldier who shot and killed four other soldiers and then took his own life on May 11, 2009 at Camp Liberty outside of Baghdad was on his THIRD tour of duty in a combat zone.

Bring these soldiers and Marines back home now!

It's a disgrace we put these men under such intense physical and mental stress yet we have a such an inadequate system available for them to seek help for their mental problems.

The military brass also needs to change the stigma currently in place of any veterans who openly seek psychological help for mental stress and stop having it be a death knell when it comes to any further advancement to a career in the military.

Iraq is a failure. Bush was a failure.

So we as Americans should just ADMIT IT and bring these guys home.

It's been said thousands of our Iraq military veterans will have psycological problems when they return home. We need to make sure our veterans are encouraged to seek mental help, that they know it will not be a detriment to their military career if they do, and to get in place a solid, wide-spread network of available support groups to treat them once they are back home on U.S. soil.

It's the least we can do for these men.

Quite a story, Herm, about fleeing Hitler in WW II. What other choice could your father have made with 5 and 8 year old boys to protect. Was this in Germany or another German-occupied country in Europe? History has told us what happened to those who stayed and were rounded up by the SS.

In the ETO first land combat wasnt until Nov. 42 with most US soldiers not seeing action until D-Day 44, though a significant number did see action in the MTO in 43 and early 44.

Well, the troops have been deployed A LOT longer than the time it took to fight WWII, there is no real enemy to fight (they're playing the role of cop), and booze and pussy are in short supply.

And how many of these brave young men had been deployed to Iraq, or Afganistan? Seems to me not many had EVER been deployed.

Remember one thing over everthing else, The military has to take a recruit who has been signed up for service. They then give them a battery of tests and examinations to show who/what they are and their capabilities for various needed specialties.

When the results of these tests are known they are either sent for additional training, OR, sent to a special unit for release/discharge from that branch of service. This entire process could take from six months to a year or more, depending upon how much 'FLUFF' was in the original enlistment form (kind of like you OR your boss improving their job resume).

Some manage to slip through the cracks and aren't identified until much later in the game. Psychiatric problems are sometimes quite dificult to identify, people have developed ways to disguise/compensate to cover their situation and actions, much like the civilian world!

Plus, the suicide rate is STILL far below the national rate! Is this really a story worth printing, or commenting on? I think only in passing.

The pilot doused all the plane's lights, went into a steep dive, and flew safely on to Tokyo, but one person was killed and twenty injured from the falling antiaircraft shells.

Same here. I was a small child during the Cuban Missile Crisis and we lived under the constant threat of a nuke falling. I've been to the Grand Canyon many times, but last time I went I took the extra three hour drive to get to the out of the way North Rim. Have you ever been there? It's like seeing the Grand Canyon for the first time. It is about 1,000-1,500 feet higher than the South Rim giving you a more elevated view. It is magnificient. I will probably never go to the S Rim again. If I ever take anyone there, I will take the extra time to go to the N Rim.

Actually, the story TWINPAC told me behind her name was quite funny. She was trying to think of a username for herself and a box containing two tubes of toothpaste caught her eye. On the box was the word "TWINPAC" (the contents being two toothpaste tubes) so she thought it was as good a name as any to use!

Sometimes I've had mixed emotions about announcing I was female (think it was back around May 2008).

Being "a guy" on DR can subject you to some brutal hits with no mercy shown! But on the otherhand, while being female you don't get punched as hard, the remarks go in a decidely different direction!

But I'm glad I can now just be myself (female) and if I think something is "pretty" (or mistakenly mention about liking to take "bubble baths"!) I can just say so without "you fag" and "Cornholio Chris" along with other DR "terms of endearment" being slung my way. LOL

If nothing else, it's been a real experience. Now there are many more women on here, it seems, than when you, me, Lisa, and GalTuesday seemed to be the only females blogging in this "all boys" clownhouse!

Other than yourself and AmericanUnity, I never considered the DR a place to form friendships. With a seniority level of 29-30, I've seen people come and go like clockwork so I kept it casual and mentally (I suppose) used the circle file under my desk to my advantage . . . if you get my drift.

To try and pin anything about Iraq or the current state of the military on a President who came into office less than 6 mos ago and had to deal with an economy that had been in free fall since September, not to mention all the other crap that needed attention RIGHT NOW, is ludicrous at best and ignorant at least.

That's 101's juvenile fallacy. I'm not here looking for friends. Goatman, for example, happens to have family and mutual friends here where I live so we all hooked up when he came to town and had a great time.

I've been a friendly people person my entire life who's blessed to have a lot of close friends who've been in my life for many years. I've also traveled a lot in my life. It's always interesting meeting new people. 101st wouldn't be one I'd ever want to even be in the same room with. I do my best to avoid vile sociopaths under any circumstances LOL

I gotta agree with AU's post #312 -- at least as far as not "coming to DR looking to form friendships." The last thing I had time for these last few years was emailing (or meeting) people on the internet as I more than had my hands full taking care of my Mom and everything else here at home. I only came to DR to blog and debate and enjoy conversations.

When I first came on DR and gave you my email address (so you could send me info on Civil War submarine, the Hunley) I think you and I have since then only exchanged about 4 short emails in 5 years time. And I had given you my real email address at that time because I was such a novice when I first got my computer and got online I never even knew anything like "disposable" email addresses even existed. But, fortunately for me, you were a decent person and I have very much appreciated you having respected my email privacy all this time.

I also exchanged about 5-6 emails last year with AU around the time my Mom and his Mom both passed away within 3 months of each other. And even then I had used a disposable email address which no longer exists.

I've always made sure to keep my email address private on here and as of right now, I can say with all honesty, I am not emailing anyone here on DR. Besides, I don't get into email cliques which a few on here seem to like doing. Don't care for the gossip, etc. Also, being a female, putting out your email address online is not always the wisest thing to do!

In my years of travels all over I've met thousands of great people. It's fun to know people in cities all over the place. Friends and casual acquaintances are two entirely different things.

Having lived for decades in vacation destination cities that offer a lot of interesting things to do and see, I've offered an invitation to many folks to show them around if they come my way if they're nice people. As far as DR goes I have a good sense of who I'd feel like meeting if they came through town (or vice versa) and who I wouldn't.

I don't spend that much time online. It might seem like it, but most of the time when I'm posting here I'm mixing or recording something and need to break frequently to freshen up my ears because I work a lot of long hours day and night when deadlines loom (they all want it 'yesterday'? LOL).
