Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

Sen. Roland Burris was recorded on an FBI wiretap suggesting that he could write a check to former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich's campaign before the ousted governor appointed Burris to the Senate. The details of the conversation emerged after a federal judge said Tuesday he would allow the U.S. Senate Ethics Committee to hear a federal wiretap of the former governor's brother, Rob, having a fund-raising conversation with Burris.

How long before he resigns?

How long before DR leftnuts admit this appoinment was bullshit?

Just another crooked democrat politician doing business as usual.

SUCKERS

Since Obama had absolutely NOTHING to do with this how is it His fault??

Larry

RIGHT........................

These are Obama's buddies.

Change you can believe in.

Pathetic.

If they were to climb this tree to the top we could impeach Obama before the new year.

Birds of a feather flock together.

Bitter Neo-cons in this thread

:)

Bitter neocons? I wasn't aware that they came in any other flavors... maybe salty...

"How long before DR leftnuts admit this appoinment was bullshit?"

You mean besides the many people on the left who opposed the appointment from the start?

How long until the rightards who argued that Reid and the Senate Dems did not have the power to reject his appointment start apologizing for defending a crook?

You sure that wasn't Plexico Burris? He needs a job I heard.

Man, that's some serious egg.

Politicians exchanging money for favors?
NOOOOO!!!
:P
The colors of their stripes matters not.

I wonder if Olbermann will squeeze a few minutes out of his torture show to mention this?
Personally, I don't think he will be distracted by this.
There is far too much old news about out-of-power, retired politicians to bother with new news about in-power, current ones.

You mean besides the many people on the left who opposed the appointment from the start?
How long until the rightards who argued that Reid and the Senate Dems did not have the power to reject his appointment start apologizing for defending a crook?

Could you provide a link on this site where some of the usual lefty suspects were against this nomination? Is this your own revised history of the Burris Nomination?

Republicans on this site said "Dems don't have the balls to not seat Burris" not that they didn't have the power. Don't you remember all the threads concerning the appointments?

What are the chances IL holds an election to allow the people to decide who should represent them rather than this corrupt system?

100% by November 2010

'What are the chances IL holds an election to allow the people to decide who should represent them rather than this corrupt system?'

The Democrats control Illinois, this is the way they have run it for a long time and this is the way it's going to stay.

RIGHT........................

Translation: I was just pulling that knee jerk out of my ass and now I cannot substantiate it.

It is going to be a long 8 years with brilliant comments like that one.

What are the chances IL holds an election to allow the people to decide who should represent them rather than this corrupt system?

----

That's what they should have done in the beginning but the Dems were afraid they might lose a Senate seat.

wow...more corruption from Chicago politics...I...AM....SHOCKED..
....

wonder how many other people that came from Chicago politics are corrupt and where will this corruption end?

That's what they should have done in the beginning but the Dems were afraid they might lose a Senate seat.

Maybe also had something to do with the 17th Amendment to the Constitution which gives the power to select senators to fill vacancies to the Governor unless the state legislature passes a law changing that authority. Currently 46 out of 50 states still give the governor that power.

And as crappy a deal as the whole Burris fiasco was, I don't believe changing the law in a knee-jerk reaction to one specific situation is a particularly prudent way to govern.

That's what they should have done in the beginning but the Dems were afraid they might lose a Senate seat.

#25 | Posted by Pirate

Ya, sure Illinois would have elected a Republican to replace Obama in a special election if the state constitution were changed. That might happen one day after Rush Limbaugh dies of a stroke. Don't hold your breath.

wonder how many other people that came from Chicago politics are corrupt and where will this corruption end?

#26 | Posted by mikemcdon321 at 2009-05-27 08:28 AM

If you think it is solely limited to Chicago and that it will end I have a bridge in Brooklyn for sale.

Maybe also had something to do with the 17th Amendment to the Constitution which gives the power to select senators to fill vacancies to the Governor unless the state legislature passes a law changing that authority. Currently 46 out of 50 states still give the governor that power.

----

The Illinois House had opportunities to strip Blago of his power to appoint but they didn't do it.

Despite initial calls by some prominent Democrats, including Sen. Dick Durbin and Quinn, for holding a special election, divisions among House Democrats left intact the current law that allows the governor to fill a U.S. Senate vacancy. That means Blagojevich still has the power to name Obama's successor, but Democrats said U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada has assured that the nation's senators would not seat such an appointment.

www.chicagotribune.com

"The Illinois House had opportunities to strip Blago of his power to appoint but they didn't do it."

Yes. I just as I said they had that power. But they couldn't have done it just for Blago - it would then have become the permanent law of Illinois. Maybe a good thing, maybe not. But I still contend that legislating based on a knee jerk reaction is not necessarily a good thing long-term.

No, Axiom and I cannot and I'm pretty sure you know that. Comments are not archived from that far back.

What I can do is point you back to the King Rethug himself talking out of his fat ass.

"you got a guy that's legit, he's qualified, and according to the Chicago Tribune today, he's authentically black. And a bunch of white people would not let him in the door, would not let him use the restroom or the drinking fountain. Now, what are we to make of this?"

Right there you have Rush Limbaugh calling Burris a qualified candidate and a legitimate appointment attacking Harry Reid and Senate Dem's for delaying the seating of Burris. This is after he was going on about how the law was all on the side of Burris.

www.rushlimbaugh.com

But I still contend that legislating based on a knee jerk reaction is not necessarily a good thing long-term.

----

Personally, I don't think preventing a governor accused of selling a senate seat (with audio tapes) from appointing somebody to said senate seat is a knee jerk reaction.

Sure it is - when you hastily pass legislation that will become the law of the land based on 1 specific incident.

when you hastily pass legislation that will become the law of the land based on 1 specific incident

----

That's why you craft it for the specific incident. Or you could just let the governor sell the seat.

As a resident of Illinois, I'll take the former over the latter.

Hmmm

So, you'd propose Illinios craft legislation just who (Blago) was supposed to sign into law in opposition to his desire to appoint a Senator?

Oh, and spend a few million dollars in the process to hold the election. You'd be against that kind of cash, wouldn't you?

Is Blago signing laws now?

"That's why you craft it for the specific incident."

Which would probably never have held up in a court of law since at the time Blago was only accused of something, but hadn't been charged with, or convicted of anything at that point.

Look, I'm not defending the Burris pick - it was and is an unmitigated disaster. But his term will be over next year and I'm sure you folks will not return him to the Senate.

If Illinois wants to change the method by which vacant Senate seats are filled, it should be done with due consideration for the long term.

Is Blago signing laws now?

#38 | Posted by Pirate

No, but he was through most of the Senate replacement discussion period. I thought you lived in Illinois? How come I know that and you don't seem to?

You'd have been bitching about Illinois spending millions to hold a special Senatorial election if they had.

There's no satisfying the right. Jesus turned them into whine.

Oh, and spend a few million dollars in the process to hold the election. You'd be against that kind of cash, wouldn't you?

----

Spending money to have a special election was and is the right thing to do.

You don't have a Governor who is under investigation for selling a Senate seat (and arrested for Federal corruption) appoint somebody to the seat.

Read the article for the alternative.

Which would probably never have held up in a court of law since at the time Blago was only accused of something, but hadn't been charged with, or convicted of anything at that point.

----

He was arrested in early December if you remember.

@ #32

Right there you have Rush Limbaugh calling Burris a qualified candidate and a legitimate appointment attacking Harry Reid and Senate Dem's for delaying the seating of Burris. This is after he was going on about how the law was all on the side of Burris.

So now Rush Limbaugh is has a legitimate opinion? Is this because his rhetoric suits your purposes?

Give me a break, please. Anyone capable of rational thinking can see that Limbaugh is stirring the pot with his statement. Limbaugh may be a drug addled hack, but he's perceptive. Do you think that he really supported Burris, or alternatively, he had a hunch that a moment like this would come up and it would shine a poor light on democrats in government?

I can almost see it now. Today, Limbaugh will profess to have "seen this coming". He'll claim that Burris was a terrible pick, and the liberals who hate him so much that they can't stop listening to him will step all over each other to report it first.

---

Of course you can search that far back. It was only a few months ago. Use google site search. I'll wait.

I suggest you start reforming the process in your home state first.

Wrong again Sanman Check the record for the liberal wingnuts that put party above intelligence. There is plenty on both sides of the isle. If you have been paying attention you can identify several on your side. Or you can become one of them and stick your head in your ass.

"Check the record for the liberal wingnuts that put party above intelligence."

www.reuters.com

Jan 6
"Roland Burris proclaimed himself the new junior senator from Illinois -- but it appeared only one fellow Democrat in the U.S. Senate chamber publicly agreed with him."

Only one liberal wingnut in the Senate, one of 57.

Jan 8
"Senate Republicans have signaled they will not oppose Burris's appointment."

That's 40 Republican wingnuts that made no effort to block Burris. I guess I can no longer say they have been the 100% party of no. They sure were quick to embrace Burris. Of course they never did mind corruption much from Delay and Abramhoff either so it's really not surprising.

Johnny,

The dems are in the majority they are the ones that swore him in!! The repubs made no effort to block him. Repubs needed to pick their battles and Burris was not one of them.

My you are a poor deflector and a real partison hack.

But actually I was referring to you and other liberal hacks on this site that at first showed outrage and then quickly fell in line when you heard reid do the same.

By the way what crime was Delay convicted of again?

Another johnny boy moment?
