Is California too big to fail? That's the question President Obama and Congress will soon face. While many states have severe fiscal problems, the depth and unusual persistence of California's budget problems -- the state has run deficits for most of the decade -- has emptied Sacramento's till. On its current path, California will run short of the cash it needs to pay its bills in late July. It's highly unlikely that the state's political leaders will be able to fix the problem themselves. Typically, states build up a cushion of tax revenues in the spring to pay expenses through the fall, when little cash comes in. But enormous drops in tax revenue have left California without the savings to meet even one month's worth of expenses.

On a perverse level I like the idea of all those whiny red states having to bail us out here in California with their hard earned tax dollars. As one poster likes to say, - "suckers".

On a perverse level I like the idea of all those whiny red states having to bail us out here in California with their hard earned tax dollars.

duh. Most of he lazy left does enjoy being carried by the capable hard working members of society. Got anything new, m8?

As one poster likes to say, - "suckers".

But when referring to those who prefer charity instead of work, they say, "losers"

I work hard. And my salary will have even more esoteric value to me knowing that on some small, minute level, Goatman money will be helping to pay it. I thank you for your efforts. LOL.

Mod-since the Red states, especially Palinaska, are the biggest welfare whores in the Union, it won't be their money bailing CA out.

Of course, all the fiscally responsible conservative Republican Governors can refuse to take the evil commie-facist-socialist-muslim money from DC, which will free more up for CA.

I'm sure we'll be seeing them line up to do just that soon.

Any day now.

Certainly before Independence day.

Labor Day?

Thanksgiving?

Christmas?

Goatman money will be helping to pay it. I thank you for your efforts. LOL.

You are quite welcome. As I often admit, I am a charitable person and never mind helping those less fortunate than I.

If Californians want their state to survive, they can all write a big check and send it off to Sacramento. They elected the tools who brought California to where it is today. They can clean up the mess.

To be fair, m8, I should also thank you for being willing to pay far more for gasoline than it's worth. If you didn't, I wouldn't make half of what do.

So, Thank you, sir, for you insatiable thirst for oil and your lack of desire to ween yourself from its teat.

I'm afraid that the national economy is California writ large..

IN any case.. I hope we do not bail out CA.. irresponsible fiscal leadership has to fail.. and the voters that elected them should think twice about it next time.

If the state goes down, payments to those on medical programs will cease. Translation-I am screwed.

Was that you that just raised gas here in Santa Monica, CA .20 cents in two weeks. Don't you know I drive a jeep? You're sticking it to me man.

Damn, go have a drink on me...

Don't you know I drive a jeep?

I have a '91 4.0 L Wrangler that is my toy. I drove it from San Antonio to S. Padre Island last week. I feel your pain, brother. Damn things are hard to keep filled with gas.

Well, the red states just zipped off a couple of trillion to lower Manhattan, the Hamptons, Connecticut, and now Detroit. Why not California? Libbies can't run investment banks, can't run auto companies, and can't run a state that is famously the 6th largest economy in the world.

But it's all okay. We'll just get the Chinese to sign over a few trillion more. After all, California went big for Barack, so none of that stuff matters these days. Bailouts are a comin'!

Simpleton.

Simpleton.

That would be Mr. Simpleton and yes.

"As one poster likes to say, - "suckers"."

We are going to be meting some economic justice.

Pardon me. I did not mean to offend.

California's Running Out of Money

Who cares. I'm running out of California -- along with thousands of others who are beating a path out of here.

It appears the Fed ran out before Cali did...

Obama: 'We're out of money'

Didn't the citizens of CA just vote against all the cost cutting measures that would have saved them from failure? They had a whopping 23% turn out at the poles too. Let's all just wave bye bye as they flush themselves down the pipes.

Isn't it odd how all the states that are failing also have the highest tax rates? The logical left thinking conclusion is that they should raise their taxes some more.

This problem should be easy for the lib politicians in California to solve. Look at all the problems they have solved in the past:

1. When they saw that they were running out of water, they learned to drink their own urine.
2. When they noticed a air pollution problem, they made charcoal bar-b-que pits illegal. Air is now perfectly clean.
3. When they saw a gang problem, they allowed ms-13 to immigrate and help out. Problem solved!

4. Whem they noticed that they had too many hospitals, they allowed massive illegal immigration which successfully closed some hospitals.

5. Following Obama's lead, they realized that their financial problems could be solved by a clever combination of tax increases, borrowing and spending money they didn;t have. Brilliant, problem solved.

Texas has high taxes in the form of sales taxes and road tolls.

This is what comes of electing a musclebound lunkhead as governor. Strangely, the job does require some intelligence. There's an easy answer. Legalize casino gambling and get back all the dough Californians donate to the empty state of Nevada. While you are at it release the drug offenders from prison and save beaucoup bucks.

Texas has toll roads? I remember having to use the Garden State Parkway when I lived in NJ. It was a pain in the butt having to stop at toll boths every so many miles and toss in money just to drive somewhere. I wonder what other states have lots of toll roads?

State and federal tax dollars are used to build our nation's highways and roads. I don't feel it's right to charge the residents of any state toll fees just to be able to drive on highways already paid for with their tax dollars. Guess I've become spoiled over the years being able to drive on California's freeways.

Quick! More tax cuts!

CA has a spending problem.

And the feds won't do anything to help out.

And the recent vote was a resounding trounce to tax increases.

"Rainy Day Fund"--yeah right.

Texas has high sales tax?? I wouldn't call 7.25% high when I pay NO state income tax. I can always order online or go to smaller towns to avoid the higher tax. I have no problems paying 8+ % in Dallas proper. At least this tax system lets me choose what I am willing to pay (like the tax on the new car I just purchased). We do pay high property tax but that pays for schools.. I do not object to this at all.. Once again, I have the choice to live in an area with low property taxes.

Sure we have toll roads.. My only complaint on them is that they are owned by foreign companies and the money is lost on local revenue. Otherwise, I do not mind them if there are also alternative roads (which there are) for each toll road.

I cannot complain about being able to cross dallas in half the time it used to take if I am willing to pay 3 or 4 tolls.

"Texas has high taxes in the form of sales taxes and road tolls."

New York and D.C. have the highest overall tax revenue per capita. Texas is one of the lowest. You are stupid. End of discussion.

"New York and D.C. have the highest overall tax revenue per capita. Texas is one of the lowest"

No wonder Texas is such a shithole.

California has an immigration problem which should be the responsibility of the federal government. For too long illegal immigrants have flowed in because of the policies of George "they are only doing jobs Americans won't do" Bush. Now it doesn't appear that President Obama understands that it simply cannot continue or this entire nation will be bankrupt. I sure hope he gets it soon. I voted for him, I still believe in him, but he better get to work on closing the border and punishing the employers who lure illegals here soon.
Money returning to Mexico from workers in America is now Mexico's second largest income source. It is draining our economy.

Glad you think so.
Please stay away.

Let the libs think we have higher taxes here in Texas so the MFers don't move here.

California, New York, Michigan. Dems in control. That is what is in store for the US.

For the love of Christ, WHY WHY WHY didn't Lincoln allow the South to secede?

The Rothchilds were in favor of it, too:>)

Texas you pay 8.25 sales Tax. And Dallas has tolls all over the place. FWTHOM by the way I am moving to Texas in June. Lets go out for beers. We can take my boat out on one of the lakes ok?

You are stupid. End of discussion.

You are a bitch and a coward. We should meet for beers also.

The tolls are an annoyance designed to fine people. Some of the toll roads don't even allow you to pay cash anymore. Unless you get a tolltag they get you with a 25 dollar fine. I'd rather just pay taxes and not deal with tolls all over dallas.

RASTA,

Why bother us in Texas. Why not move to a blue state? Why not move to a wonderful inner city which the dems have turned into paradise?

Fwthom because I love Mexican Prostitutes. The oppurtunity to live right on the border was too great an opportunity to pass up. Nuevo Laredo is just mere minutes away.

California has an immigration problem which should be the responsibility of the federal government. For too long illegal immigrants have flowed in because of the policies of George "they are only doing jobs Americans won't do" Bush.

Is this a wake up call, homegirl. Some of us have been opposed to illegal immigration from the get-go. It isn't only Bush and the C of C that are responsible for this debacle. It is a combination of businesses which have had their illegal alien workers subsidized for decades now, and the bleeding heart lefties joined in a coalition. After all, who declared "sanctuary cities" and prohibited police from enforcing federal law and turning in criminals (which is the status of all illegal aliens)? Who so vehemently opposed deportation on "humanitarian" grounds?

The lefty attitude is that the only reason there is not more wealth is meanness of the righties, that some miraculous process fills the cornucopia.

And don't forget the lefties see the Hispanics as a group that will overwhelmingly vote for them so any cost is worthwhile to them if it enables them to retain political power.

There is a cost of what, some $10,000 per year for school for each student, so and illegal alien with four children will cost $520,000 from K-12? And free health care overwhelming emergency and other facilities. And criminal justice system (victim's losses, capture, processing through courts, incarceration) costs add another heavy levy. And the courts have held that it is compulsory that the state provide all sorts of benefits, schooling, health care, welfare, food stamps, rental subsidies, and the like without regard to legal status. In fact, some states provide illegal aliens with resident reduced college costs that are denied residents of other states.

The litany of expenditures for illegal aliens is bankrupting California. What is it, some $10,000 per child per year, so from K-12, four illegal alien children will cost $520,000. Free health care. Criminal justice system (victims' losses, apprehension, legal costs, and imprisonment) expenses increased by need to police gangs centers of drug dealing, and minority group killings to secure territory, welfare, food stamps, subsidized housing. The courts had declared that illegal aliens are entitled to all of the benefits of citizens.

Now it doesn't appear that President Obama understands that it simply cannot continue ...

Remember that whatever the cost, the Holy Grail for a politician is remaining in power, and the illegal aliens are considered a source of votes for Democrats.
... punishing the employers who lure illegals here soon.

Money returning to Mexico from workers in America is now Mexico's second largest income source. It is draining our economy.

Jail the employers. What about deporting the illegal aliens, and their families. The previous legal decisions can be interpreted to deny citizenship to children born to people who are subjects of a foreign sovereign, and we have agreements with Mexico providing access to their consulates here for assistance and for documentation.

If we need workers, they can come as "braceros," work during the harvest season and return home with a poke full of money. If they are not available, workers are available from other countries not in close proximity to us, and so we cannot be as readily inundated with hordes of illegals. And if our welfare system were tightened, we might have Americans, the portion of our population with skill sets that formerly have them working at such jobs, doing so rather than collecting benefits.

If you keep your house open, soon you will run out of room, facilities, and food. This is a problem in which the Californians were full participants in creating.

There is no free lunch. And with thousands of retailers closing, and malls failing, the worst is yet to come. There is a reciprocating effect, fewer jobs, less income, less taxes, and just not enough to sustain the standard of living we previously enjoyed.

Appealing to Obama, the leveler a la Rev. Wright, who wants to "take from the so-called "rich" and distribute to the poor, and who in the process will compromise our ability to produce goods and services. Get real Danni. You (and others) have projected attributes and aims upon Obama that are your fantasy and not part of his psyche.

Continuity.

I predict that Reefer will be legalized in Cali by years end out of desperation and BHO will squash this as one of those exceptions to State's rights.
Either that or Cali will continue to execute the Federal solution of increasing taxes on those who are fleeing the state and attempt to spend their way out of debt.

Actually, the more I think about it, I predict all three will occur.

...California....pffft.

I am going to enjoy watching our legislators squirm and blame everyone other than themselves for this mess.

Burn baby burn.

California has been dominated by Dems for many years now. It spent everything it made in taxes, and failed to save when Silicon Valley was a "bulletproof" economy that brought in billions to state coffers.

Now, you have a huge government that regulates business to death, companies leaving and shutting down in droves, and no more tax base to cover. Also, state employees get FAT pensions when they retire (i.e. sometimes 90% of salary + medical). With the aging of the population, this is going to crash big, and I don't think any right minded person thinks otherwise.

If they try to tax their way out of it, business will leave in numbers even greater than they currently are. To get a new business, especially something dealing with manufacturing or processing, the regulations are absolutely suffocating.

The CEQA process is expensive, and everytime there's any proposed project of any size, the Company trying the new venture has to add millions just to get through the red tape.

CA is bankrupt, and there will necessarily have to be a crash. The bankruptcy was due, however, to the huge giveaway to public employees (Cali is the biggest employer in Cali), and massive regulation on business. Even with Prop. 13, the tax burden is plenty big with 8.25% sales, state income tax, and all the nickel and dime taxes that are imposed by way of special assessment districts, school fees, etc.

The farmers in the central valley have ghosttowns where there were once flourishing farms because enviros turned off the pumps from the delta - causing a huge water shortage. That, over the smelt (i.e. bait fish), that somehow made it to the endangered species act. Unless there's radical action, those towns will turn into dustbowls, and nobody in SF of LA gives a shit. They will when the water stops coming, and they have to pay $5 for a head of lettuce.

It's time to wake up folks, but it may already be too late to avoid a total collapse of Cali.

We're still spending $550,000,000,000 for the OIL we import from unfriendly nations! I wonder just how far that money would go right now toward getting us ut of this mess?

California's representatives, a few years ago, spent a $10 Billion dollar one-time windfall to fund ON-GOING programs. Not to bright, I would think!

Now the voters have deided enough with them paying the entire bill! 'Let's let everyone ELSE pay it for us.' Not a bad idea and it spreads the pain around quite a bit! Next comes New York/Jersey, then Mass., and then twenty or so other States!

Just who ends up paying for all this? Look in the mirror, its far to much for the rich to pay!

And look at the proposal to tax beer, wine, liqour and sweet soft drinks! Next will be condoms, the knife, fork, and spoon you use to eat in the restaurants!

Then think of the surcharge on GAS and OIL products added to the cost of fuel, home heating, electricity and just about everything else! We will be fortunate to get out of this with our hides intact, much less with any money left! Good luck in the finger pointing!!
