Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

In the days leading up to the Iraq War, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld prepared classified intelligence briefings for President Bush. Each one juxtoposed images of war with Bible quotations and was delivered by Rumsfeld himself to the president. "Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him," read one from Psalms, "To deliver their soul from death."

I actually hope someone can establish that these intel. briefing cover pages are a joke, or some kind of prank.

Seriously. Take a look at this. I want to be (convincingly) told that this is not true.

Surely these were not the cover sheets for Bush's Pentagon world intel. briefs. It must be some kind of joke.

I just Googled GQ Magazine, and it's on their site.

Nehemiah Scudder come to life.

Somehow I don't think Heinlein would be all that proud.

Ted-
No one would believe it. Too fanciful, and too reliant on exaggerated stereotypes of what intel briefings would look like under a stupid, yet fundamentalist apocalyptic and optimistic lunatic with a Secretary of Defense eagerly playing the game.

I'd throw it right out of a first draft as lazy writing.

'night

YAV-
This is on the back page. Someone else can do it better, as always, but I can't seem to find the joke.

Anyways, I'm gone for the night.

Rock on.

One would like to believe it's a joke, but knowing Bushco, I fear that it's likely accurate.

On March 31, a U.S. tank roared through the desert beneath a quote from Ephesians: "Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand." On April 7, Saddam Hussein struck a dictatorial pose, under this passage from the First Epistle of Peter: "It is God's will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish men."

Of course the apoligists won't mention this. Nor will they admit that Bush, Rummy, et al were no better than the religous extremists they were claiming to be protecting us from.

Religion: Root of all Evil.

www.thenation.com

It's official: the 2004 campaign is a referendum on whether the United States should wage a crusade to bring liberty to the repressed of the world--particularly in the Middle East--in order to heed the call of God and to protect the United States from terrorists who target America because they despise freedom. Or, at least, that is how George W. Bush would like the contest to be framed.

In his acceptance speech, Bush pushed the message of the week--it's the war, stupid--to lofty heights. Like the speakers of previous nights, he fully embraced the war in Iraq. But while John McCain, Rudy Giuliani, Zell Miller, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Laura Bush depicted the war as an action necessary for safeguarding America, Bush also placed it within the context of an even grander mission. "America," he proclaimed from that altar-like podium, "is called to lead the cause of freedom in the new century....Freedom is not America's gift to the world. It is the Almighty God's gift." (Minutes earlier, New York Governor George Pataki described Bush as the Supreme Being's gift to the United States: "He is one of those men God and fate somehow lead to the fore in times of challenge.")

“It is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish men.”

Surely these were not the cover sheets for Bush's Pentagon world intel. briefs. It must be some kind of joke.

I dearly hope so.

The sad thing is, if it were true, I wouldn't be surprised. Just nauseated.

Takitez is a woman? Or is that just your way of being insulting?

Although I am reluctant to talk for God, I am Tiny Elvis and that means that I'm a little bit of the King of the Kings of Rock and Roll and that's damned near a God in a whole lotta places and trailer parks. So here we go and this is the Gospel according to the Tiny One. These little boy men born of silver spoons and intellectual deceit possess the technology to come halfway around the world to invade countries. Is that a sin? Well, it ain't too nice, but it's a bit like kicking someone's door down. As the Tiny One, I'd look at kicking down a door in the trailer park as a necessity now and then. It's what you do when you kick the door down that counts. So McBush and these girlyboys torture a couple or maybe a whole lotta folks and get them a good reason to go and invade Iraq. Saddam was giving $10,000 or something like that to suicide bombers in the Mideast, so maybe that's enough reason right there. McBush Inc. was able to invade Iraq because of a vastly superior use of technology and after invading McBush Inc. did nothing to improve the lives of the Iraqi people with that vastly superior technology. I hear that everyone in the country has health care for free, so maybe we are paying for something good. But as the Tiny One, I'm offended that McBush Inc. didn't dedicate the use of this vastly superior technology to benefit the people of Iraq. Instead, the McCorporations got contracts for all kinds of goofy stuff, like killing and torturing folk. As the Tiny One, that greatly offends me and I'd expect that the real God might be offended Herself. As the Tiny One, I'm also offended at the use of religion to support the McBush Inc. reasoning machine in greasing the gears of torture and deceit. So there it is, straight from the mouth of the Tiny Elvis. It might be better to hear it from me than God if she gets good and pissed off.

Donald Rumsfeld is going to hell.

Rumsfeld is an American hero Alexa, you need to check your fictions with St. Pete......

Rumsfeld dummed down intel to fool Bush. Put bible verses and dopey 6th grade graphics on official pentagon stuff...
So he could soothe W and make him do what he wanted.(have you seen the pics? It's ridiculous and embarrassing.)

I repeat: Donald Rumsfeld is going to hell.

I'm sure Saddam is directing you from beyond the grave Alexa, there is no way you could be so stupid on your own.

Evil exists, it exercises influence on the living from beyond the grave.....

You are in the grip of evil and lack the capacity to help yourself.

Saddam is never coming back to reclaim the souls filling his mass graves, he is never coming back to continue his death march...

He is gone now, dead and dessicated....Never to return, despite the wishes of his human drones.

Thank you Donald Rumsfeld.

Rumsfeld shaking Hands with Saddam Hussein - Press Release

Address:www.gwu.edu

You're nuts, rex.

You mean the mass graves a one Ronald Reagan helped Saddam to fill Rex??? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm bwhahahahaha

Larry

Saddam was evil incarnate, a mad gibbering lunatic, bent on bringing death to everyone and thing around him....

He lived only to kill, a serial mass murderer with only one reason to live....And that was to destroy life.

The human drones that take up his cause are infested with his madness from beyond the grave, they are sickened with the very evil that consumed Saddam and his sick brood of demons.

Evil infects your mind and soul.

Yes Rex He was Evil but He had the full blessings from Ronald Reagan. Why don't You want to hear that?? Hmmmmmmmmmmmm. Hell Reagan supported Him all the way.

Larry

"My financial and personal well being are totally in the hands of Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, Tim Geithner, Rahm Emmanual, Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, and Al Gore"

If that doesn't scare the crap out of you, then you are probably destined to be backed up for the rest of your life.

There is no need to thank me for this advice, I'm just doing a public service.

Saddam was evil incarnate, a mad gibbering lunatic, bent on bringing death to everyone and thing around him....

Speaking of gibbering lunatics...

He lived only to kill, a serial mass murderer with only one reason to live....And that was to destroy life.

K, here's the thing about that.

First off, America supported Saddam Hussein and even made him a most favored nation trading partner at one point.

Donald Rumsfeld helped Saddam develop those WMDs that he later acted so afraid of, despite knowing full well they has already been largely destroyed.

/A relative of Saddam had escaped earkier to the west with paperwork detailing the "secret destruction" of those WMD that were never found.
//Both Britain and America's top spooks knew this before the invasion.

America sold arms to both Iraq and Iran in the Iraq Iran war. American AWACs provided Saddam's air force with targets for bombing including Halabja.

Where was your outrage then?

Throughout the bulk of his atrocities America had Saddam's back.

Own that.

Secondly, Casualties amongst Iraqi civilians due to bombing, starvation, civil unrest, little to no health facilities etc range from hundreds of thousands to over a million.

Far more than than the number of deaths caused by Saddam in his entire career.

That makes America worse than Saddam in terms of sheer victims.

Worse than "Evil incarnate".

So can the hyperbole.

You sound like a badly written comic book.

The human drones that take up his cause are infested with his madness from beyond the grave

K, here's the other thing. Being morally ouraged at the waste of life, limbs, time and resources in Iraq is not quite the same thing as "taking up" Saddam's cause.

Wanting legal repercussions for the torture scandals, corporate cronyism, deliberate lies, DoJ firing scandals, the Plame scandal, Domestic spying scandfals, financial scandals, deregulation scandals, and other Constitutional oversteps does not equate to being fans of Saddam Hussein.

"Saddam bad! We good!", which essentially seems to be yer argument here, is a gross oversimplification.

Be Well.

On Topic?

Intelligence briefings replete with Bible verses?

Are we supposed to be surprised bt this point?

Donny and Dickless sold this war.

Sold it to the media.

Sold it to the masses.

Sold it to Congress.

Sold it to the world.

With lies.

It only stands to reason that Donny and Dickless also sold this war to Dumbya albeit in a language his wee booze-wrecked, coked-out, born again mentality could understand.

Bible bumpersticker sound bytes and lies.

Using carefully parsed snippets of bible talk, specially crafted propaganda and cherry picked intel they justified the unjustifiable.

They spray painted a turd gold, presented it to Dumbya and then told him it was solid gold and then implied that God thought he was doing a heckuva holy job.

And he bought it.

Be Well.

Anyone who said that the US went into Iraq for oil and money missed the entire point. The reason was Bush and Co. asinine religious beliefs. My God, what madness.

You people will believe anything as long as it's about Bush/Cheney and is negative.

Amazing.

However, it is his view on the motive for the 2003 Iraq invasion that is likely to provoke the most controversy. "I am saddened that it is politically inconvenient to acknowledge what everyone knows: the Iraq war is largely about oil," he says.

Not too amazing.

Cheney is still writing the script. Are you saying he's a liar?

Are you saying that we shouldn't believe the words that are coming out of Cheney's very own mouth?

All of it negative, BTW.

(Note the curlish affectation . . . the infamous snarl . . . the thinly veiled innuendo.)

Oh yeah . . . it's negative all right.

Instead of blasting us, why don't you give Cheney a jingle and tell him to STFU.

Bingo, TwinPac. Well said.

Check out the slideshow of Bush's classified intelligence briefs. They are in full-color and adorned with biblical quotes:

(And it's not a prank as far as I can tell, though I wish it were.)

This is one of my favorites:

"Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and your plans will succeed"

I feel so relieved now that I know that Bush was on a mission from God, when at the time I thought he was maybe just incompetent. Whew!

This is how the talibaptists evade responsibility.

You mean the mass graves a one Ronald Reagan helped Saddam to fill Rex???

Don't forget that Iraq was buying cultures of all sorts of pathogens and mass-producing chemical weapons during the Regan administration... but we didn't care because he was using the nerve gas on his own people and the Iranians.

It was only after people realized Saddam was trying to make a offensive BW program and was threatening our oil supply that he became a "madman".

You are in the grip of evil and lack the capacity to help yourself.

How do you know that you are not in the grip of a most sinister evil that deludes you into believing you are being righteous.

Fucking fundie morons... the holes in their worldview are big enough to drive a truck through.

This story just shows that the Bush administration was not just evil but really creepy. These lunatics thought they were conducting a Crusade though they denied it, they still were. It underscores the need for a real investigation of everything they did.

It underscores the need for a real investigation of everything they did.

I agree 100%, but I don't think now is the time. I have often said here "when the house is burning down, you put out the fire first and look to see who started it second." We still have fires burning and I think the country is too partisan for any hint of truth to be found. There is an old Jewish saying: there are three sides to every story: yours, mine, and what really happened. With things the way they are now, we will only get the first two and not the very important third.

"...It only stands to reason that Donny and Dickless also sold this war to Dumbya albeit in a language his wee booze-wrecked, coked-out, born again mentality could understand..."

DethSpud;

Once again I bow to your humble taterness.

"With things the way they are now, we will only get the first two and not the very important third."

Yeah that's what we said after Watergate, after Iran Contra, etc. and that's why we continue to have administrations ignore the rule of law. We need a thorough investigation and we need to let the chips fall where they may, regardless of who gets burned and how badly they get burned. We have just had our country led into war under false pretenses and then had torture used to force confessions to justify it. Sorry, it can't be swept under the rug, the world is watching and waiting for America to demonstrate that we believe in the rule of law. Otherwise we will just continue to be seen as an imperialistic power that uses military might whenever and wherever it suits us which will encourage a challenge to our military superiority sooner than people think.

Yeah that's what we said after Watergate, after Iran Contra

And technically, nothing came from those investigations either. We are still having to deal with an increasingly stronger Iran as proof of that and directly due to Reagan's little games. Same with Chavez in South Americanland and the crack problem today...

This slideshow doesn't make any sense--not for a Pentagon Intelligence Briefing.

Sorry--it doesn't.

And since Obama has picked up the mantle to run with it--the surge, the help to Paki, the continued help to Iraq--it's all the same.

Obama just drops the words democracy. He is just doing it to do it.

And he is doing more in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

He is going after terrorism--I mean the Taliban and AQ the same as Bush.

To his credit imho.

Well to Rumsfeld's credit, when you see a gullible Christian, you just have to take advantage of them.

Everyone else is doing it!!

Today, the 733,319th day since Jesus said a God Damn thing to anyone.

Danni--Bush took it to the terrorists in Iraq. Remember all the critics when he said we are going to fight them in Iraq so we don't have to fight them here?

You can argue whether they were there on day one or the day Saddam was captured or even today.

But AQ et al was fighting our troops in Iraq.

Now they moved their fighters to Afghanistan and Pakistan-Swat area.

Our troops killed them or chased them out of Iraq.

Now Obama is going to kill them in Afghanistan or Pakistan.

Same Bush policy.

Rumsfeld is an American hero

To about three people, I'm guessing. Rex, Cheney and Rummy. To the people he refused to protect on 9-11 and the troops he sent to die under the Bush Doctrine-"too little, too late but pay the mercenaries whatever they want", not so much. Maybe bin laden-he owes him something for Tora Bora.

Even Dubya was smart enough to fire his incompetent ass, thankfully hanging on to him until after the November 2006 elections.

"Danni--Bush took it to the terrorists in Iraq. Remember all the critics when he said we are going to fight them in Iraq so we don't have to fight them here?"

The one country in the ME where there were not terrorists was Iraq. Any person who minimally reads about the era realizes the "Al Quaeda in Iraq" was not the same group we fought in Afghanistan. THese are old arguments long sinced debunked Murphy.
Had Bush not diverted troops and resources to Iraq and instead had put his efforts into fighting Al Quaeda and the Taliban in Afghanistan we would have destroyed both.

You see now that the Bush admin religious zealots are no better than the Muslim religious zealots. They are both willing to shed blood in the name of "god" how stupid. A fanatic is a fanatic, period. There is no room for these types of tunnel vision pseudo-religious people. Separate church and State once and for all. The last thing I want is a politician quoting some over edited and re-rewritten "bible," to serve his right wing agenda! You know the two major social rules, not to talk about Religion or Politics...? They have even less relevance when bundled together.

You use the lower case naming God and place the Bible in ellipses. You have your agenda, they had theirs.

Nothing like a Crusade to roil and muddy the waters.

#61 | Posted by Doc_Sarvis

Do you remember what started the crusades? They went down there to protect the christians from the Muslims. Damn, now that you mention it, it is crystal clear what is happening today.

I am, however, a fan of separation of church and state. I am not a fan, therefore, of people making public policy without being informed by faith in God. My position is pretty much the standard for the many generations.

People don't come out of the chute good. Someone has to socialize all of us out of innate barbarism. It's not important a Christian does this. It is important that someone with recognizeably Christian ideals does this.

Just got through reading the leading atheist of his generation argue it should be illegal for parents to teach their children religion. That would be child abuse, in fact. Something punishable under law.

Like I said, I'm a fan of separation of church and state. Between "rational" and "supersitious" bastards, no differnce at all.

"You use the lower case naming God and place the Bible in ellipses."

You have an incredible grasp of the obvious. But - Yes I did that, and yes, very much on purpose. George Bush's god is not my God and his bible, is not my Bible. The queen of England is not running my Church. The born-again agenda has nothing to do with my beliefs and those repub-right-wing-zealots kill in the name of "god" just like AQ. You see, God would never sanction that...ever. So I give no respect to their false god or books. Call it literary freedom - but at least my coloring book is right-side up

So what! The Bible is considered one of the world's greatest literary works whether you believe in the Bible or not. Its words affects billions of people worldwide and shapes personal lives, politics, laws and economic policies. If you quote any other great literary work, you are considered well-educated and intelligent. If you quote the Bible, the liberals consider you a religious zealot and an idiot to boot.

Just another article by God hating immoral liberals.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Right up there with The Pet Goat.

Sorry, is the bible up for a Pulitzer or something?

Let me guess; are you a Haggard or Baker?

And are you referring to the Old or the New Testament?

The Bible is considered one of the world's greatest literary works whether you believe in the Bible or not.

Perhaps it was in its original language... but the centuries of mistranslation and redaction by politically-minded organizations like the Catholic Church and European monarchies have bastardized the "Bible" that you read.

It is an interesting story. But is there any reason an intelligence report needs to be full of literary filagree and mythological allusions? I personally enjoy the story of Ragnarok, but I would be quite disturbed if Obama was getting intelligence briefings that likened China to a dragon that circles the world to devour its own tail, awaiting the day it will meet Thor in an apocalyptic clash of good and evil...

Just another article by God hating immoral liberals.

You hate god too... you just call him by his arabic name when you want to profess your hatred.

If you quote the Bible, the liberals consider you a religious zealot and an idiot to boot.

When you use scripture out of context for justifying some hideous transgression that runs contrary to the very essence of what the Bible teaches (like every quote on these slides), you deserve to get called on it.

This is exactly what using the Lord's name in vain means. This is blasphemy. You do not USE God. When you do that, you dishonor your God. You take your God's name in vain to justify your actions.

Lincoln knew the difference:

"Our task should not be to invoke religion and the name of God by claiming God's blessing and endorsement for all our national policies and practicessaying, in effect, that God is on our side. Rather, we should pray and worry earnestly whether we are on God's side."

Of course, some people are never socialized out of barbarism. A number of people perceive, often correctly, that barbarism can be successful and profitable. Or amusing, at least. Which explains not a few human beings.

The Bible is often magnificent literature.

Until you compare it to the lord of the rings... then it becomes second rate fiction.

"Rationalizes own illiteracy...."

Yah. Much better than sanctifying one's lack of critical taste. Maybe you can find a library to burn later?

Bligh's management skills notwithstanding, his seamanship is a matter of record.

Sorry to rain on your parade folks, but the leaders of our country have been quoting the bible and praying for centuries. Rumsfeld is hardly the first and won't be the last.

I heard the senate prays. Any truth to that folks?

"The President of the United States represents 154,000,000 people. Most of them have no lobby and no special representation. The President must represent all the people. Therefore, the President must be a sort of super-public relations man. His powers are great, but he must know how to make people get along together... Some people think that public relations should be based on polls. That is nonsense. I wonder how far Moses would have gone if he had taken a poll in Egypt? What would Jesus Christ have preached if He had taken a poll in the land of Israel? Where would the Reformation have gone if Martin Luther had taken a poll? It isn't polls or public opinion alone of the moment that counts. It is right and wrong, and leadership -- men with fortitude, honesty and a belief in the right that make epochs in the history of the world."

Jeebus has still failed to show up and KISS MY ASS.

He's gonna let you come to him, but I don't think it's to kiss your ass.

Sorry to rain on your parade folks, but the leaders of our country have been quoting the bible and praying for centuries.

I doubt many of them have been littering their reports about terrorism with florid allusions from the "good book".

Hey dimwit, jeebus has five seconds to blow me or your pathetic existence is shit.

Time's up!

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
aaaaaa

Me thinks Zatoichi is scared of G-d that's why He acts the way He does towards G-d. I think something very bad happened in His childhood that caused Him to flip out on G-d. That's My take on it.

Do a google search, I'm not going to do it for you.

Does the Senate still pray?

Does the Senate still pray?

Irrelevant.

Ceremony and substance are not equivalent.

Yes, but I'm reasonably certain they don't attach a scripture verse to every piece of legislation that passes.

What's this revisionism about Truman. He was more ignorant then Bush. He called the A Bomb a gadget.
Rummy is right up there on the IQ scale.

rumsfield was right about one thing we needed to slim down the military to fight the wars of the 21st century -it needed to by lighter and faster-of course the generals who had wet dreams of big tank battles in central europe were oposed to this
but had they listened we would not have all those tanks and heavy equipment that are so useless now

After all this time, I can't figure out if the fetish involved is oral sex or stopwatches.

That's exactly like saying that every single gun seller in America is responsible for every death that the gun they sold caused. You are still an idiot, Larry.

Yes Rex He was Evil but He had the full blessings from Ronald Reagan. Why don't You want to hear that?? Hmmmmmmmmmmmm. Hell Reagan supported Him all the way.

Larry, you are incredibly over-simplifying the Reagan Iraq situation. Reagan was aiding Saddam to fend off Iran. Geopolitics are always much more complex than how you describe them, Larry. If people bought into your version they'd all think that Reagan fed Saddam for the sole purpose of killing as many people as possible and he enjoyed doing it. You are still an idiot, Larry.

Onward Christian Soldiers!

"The Bible is considered one of the world's greatest literary works ..."

The first thing that needs to be indentified is what "the Bible" actually is. Jews have a different opinion from Christians, Catholics and Lutherans a different one from the "fundamental" Protestants. Etc.

Having said this, anything which has been around as long as the "Bible" and been read by as many people definitely deserves a very high rating among works of literature.

However, it _is_ a literary work. It is _not_ a history book, nor a scientific one. It is _not_ the last word on things, nor is it the inerrant and literal word of God. People may believe it is one or all of those things. If it helps them, fine. But their belief does _not_ make it so.

What about all that stuff in the bible about forgiving people, feeding the hungry and helping the sick and helpless, etc.? Guess that stuff never found its way into a secret Pentagon report. It's only like 99% of the bible...so based on their track record, maybe they just legitimately missed it.

"The Bible is not a history book..."

But of course it is. Most interestingly, it has been a guide to the uncovering of history, transforming "myth" into what the snide likes to think is reality.

Your belief otherwise does not make it so.

All this hostility towards religion. Makes me think of Dawkins once again, who justifies his own nastiness with the clever argument he's not as nasty as he could be.

The man's got an IQ of 200 but the social intelligence of a gnat. I'm still trying to figure out why such nouvelle-snotiness represents some great leap forward for mankind.

All this hostility towards religion. Makes me think of Dawkins once again, who justifies his own nastiness with the clever argument he's not as nasty as he could be.

The "hostility" comes from knowing our own Government was using your "Religion" to justify and rationalize The Iraqi War. And all that came with that War.

Like Torture.

And it is not just any religion. It is that End of Times crap.

"Armageddon is not exactly a foreign policy."

So....we waged a religious 'crusade' did we?

I wonder what any of the 4000 Dead American Soldiers that weren't Christians would say if they knew this was some 'Christian Crusade' that they were sent to die for.

And in the end many will say.... "Lord ! Lord ! ...did we not prophesy in your name"...and he will say to them...."I never knew you"

"Hostility towards religion" is not the point.

The point is that Rumsfeld, experienced politician, used his knowledge of George W Bush's naivety and stupidity to further his ends.

It's both clever, and totally corrupt. But what do you expect from a man like Rumsfeld?

Now in "disgrace" but sitting on about $50 million. Nice work if you can get it.

When you're a "War Monger" who's "Cherry Picking" the Bible for quotations it must take quite a bit of talent to null & void the phrase "Thou Shalt Not Kill!"
