The first thing that needs to be indentified is what "the Bible" actually is. Jews have a different opinion from Christians, Catholics and Lutherans a different one from the "fundamental" Protestants. Etc.

Having said this, anything which has been around as long as the "Bible" and been read by as many people definitely deserves a very high rating among works of literature.

However, it _is_ a literary work. It is _not_ a history book, nor a scientific one. It is _not_ the last word on things, nor is it the inerrant and literal word of God. People may believe it is one or all of those things. If it helps them, fine. But their belief does _not_ make it so.

What about all that stuff in the bible about forgiving people, feeding the hungry and helping the sick and helpless, etc.? Guess that stuff never found its way into a secret Pentagon report. It's only like 99% of the bible...so based on their track record, maybe they just legitimately missed it.
