Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs
Sunday, May 17, 2009

Nothing is simple if you're Harry Reid. This week the Senate was working on a consumer rights bill for credit card holders when Tom Coburn, an Oklahoma Republican, suddenly proposed an amendment to allow people to carry loaded guns in national parks.

This would seem relevant only if consumers are worried that they will not be able to use their American Express at a souvenir stand in Yellowstone, and will need to hold up the cashier in order to bring home a much-anticipated geyser refrigerator magnet.

Unfortunately this is the way the U.S. Congress works as shamelessly evidenced by the recent "Stimulus Bill" which had little actual "stimulus" but an abundance of pork.

This particular amendment though has a righteous purpose - the right of law-abiding Americans to carry firearms for protection when visiting U.S. Parks. What's the problemo? Nada! The simple fact is criminals already carry loaded firearms into national parks so why shouldn't good people not be able to do the same?

As much as it pains many on the DR the right to arm oneself for self-defense is a right guaranteed to the individual U.S. citizen by the U.S. Constitution - as it should be. The only problem here is that it is even necessary to enact legislation to verify a right that we already have.

If it's such a "Noble" and "patriotic" thing to do-why force it as an amendment into a bill that's totally unrelated?

An abundance of pork???
Your drinkin' the wrong scotch-it's rotting your brain.
That "pork" was less than 1% of the total in the bill.
The rtards screaming the loudest about the "pork"-had their own pork barrel projects in it.

Aside from that-He forced it into a bill on credit card customers' rights. Which, it seems to me-has zero to do with guns.

1%? I'm more than positive math isn't one of your strong points frank.

As far as tacking on non related amendments to pending bills you probably noticed that I mentioned in the first paragraph of my original comment that as shameless as the practice is that's the way Congress works. Or maybe basic English isn't one of your strong points either.

If it's such a "Noble" and "patriotic" thing to do-why force it as an amendment into a bill that's totally unrelated?

Because Tom Coburn, Republican senator from Oklahoma, is a stupid dick.

I wouldn't mind it being legal for me to carry in a national park but pshaaw, dude, get your own bill.

Or maybe basic English isn't one of your strong points either.

You should hear his comedy routine.

with all the other stuff going on now the parks will revert to "old west" lawlessness . . .

gunfights over campsites ... hikers ambushed ... and gift shops robbed (like was mentioned above)

I heard the same bull spouted by the uninformned when Texas and Florida passed their "Shall Issue" concealed weapons laws. These comments came up again when Michigan passed it's current law. It has been at least 10 years for Texas and Florida and around 5 years for Michigan. These events never happened.

On topic: It is shameful that politicians pull this crap but it is standard procedure. I am in favor of this amendment but it should be made to stand on it's own merit.
Too many times amendments are added to a bill just because the original bill or the amendment is too weak to stand on it's own.

1% is still too damn much.

I don't care which side of the aisle the sleazebag politician who proposed it sits on.

Another sign that the pendulum is swinging more conservative?
