Too often "Hate Crime Legislation" is used to go after someone when the victim is a member of a minority group. For example, beat up a stranger and it is a battery. But beat up a stranger who is also gay (and they can prove you knew he was gay) and it becomes a "hate crime". I'm not sure how strongly I support such legislation in a vacuum.

I agree that vague assumptions about motives don't prove a hate crime. But there are instances where it can be proven and documented that someone was specifically targeted because of race, gender, or sexual orientation.

It doesn't make you look good when you use it, but come on it's just a word.

Most everyone is offended by them, but clearly they do not merit a dump.
