To help offset a $17 million dollar deficit, the leaders of Providence, RI, are suggesting a $150 per semester "fee" on students at the 22,000 student Brown University and three other schools in the city. If enacted, it would be the first time a U.S. city has directly taxed students just for being enrolled.

You know as I have been looking around at different Colleges in My area all I can see is DOLLAR SIGNS$$$$$$$$$$ I just do not understand why they have to be so elaborate on EVERYTHING. For a poor shmuck like Me You immediately feel out of place in these Bastions of Higher Learning. I wonder how much nonecentials they could do away with that would cover the 17Million shortfall. At a time when our economy is rocky it's not a time to nickle and dime students to bankruptsy

Larry

What else is new? Colleges and universities have been nickle and diming students to death with new "fees" for years. They often do this to get around tuition increases caps. Over a six year period my fees went from about eight hundred dollars to well over a thousand (close to $1500). Didn't get anything more with the higher fees except for a bigger bill.

I just do not understand why they have to be so elaborate on EVERYTHING. For a poor shmuck like Me You immediately feel out of place in these Bastions of Higher Learning.

Hey Larry, if you're interested in getting a college education, there are some schools out there that don't have all the flash and higher costs. Most are community colleges, but don't let anyone tell you these schools don't count. Oftentimes these schools offer the same level of education, just without the prestige (and associated costs that go with that). Not a bad avenue if you're just looking for a non-flashy education.

I think the city leaders of Providence need to read the following article talking about how much debt college grads are already accumulating.

redtape.msnbc.com

Fuck that, just give the child income tax credit directly to the school district.

Why are we encouraging population growth any way?

larry - our son had the opportunity for a university scholarship in music - he turned down the chance because he wants to get his general ed out of the way at a community college to which he received a scholarship to also, although it will pay just for tuition at 15 units a semester. check out your community colleges - they offer some very good opportunities for "poor schmucks" like you and our son.

I guess they don't collect enough TAX on the university and on all the business that are there because of the students.

Isn't there such a thing as shrinking government?

Just look at the feds. WH staff 16% larger than last year. Average gov worker pay $70+k per year when the private sector is 1/2 that.

When is enough, enough!

Why are we encouraging population growth any way?

I have to agree. I went to a state junior college and it has served me well in my career for 30 years.

In fact, I've seen many cases where students (young engineers) come out of carnagie-mellon and georgia tech and vanderbilt and some other high-end schools who are totally worthless, because they think they are too good to do regular work. They think when they get out of school, they are gonna be splitting atoms or some fanatastic research, and the truth is that when an engineer gets out of college, that's when his education starts. The college only verifies that the person is educable.

If you go to a community college and plan to go to a 4 yr school later, make sure your credits will transfer.

The Hulkster says that if you're is rich enough to send you to Brown, you're rich enough to find that $150.

The Hulkster suggests you walk around his alma mater's campus (not Brown) and count the number of Mercedes, Audis, and BMWs. Those Hulkamaniacs should be able to find more than $150 for tickets to Wrestlemania.

HULKAMANIA FOREVER

There is no logical reason to have this tax. Its a money grab pure and simple. Chances that someone would decide not to go to Brown over $150 a year tax are very slim and this scummy mayor knows it.

I went to a school that loved to nickel and dime. During the blizzard of '94, I was living off campus and my car broke down so I had to just pretty much crash it into a snowbank in front of my place just to keep it out of the street. Then it got warm out for a while and when the snow bank melted enough, it turns out my right front tire was on the curb and touching a blade of grass that belonged to the school. So the school gave me one of their private parking tickets when my car was parked on a public street for which I had a permit. Touching their blade of grass was to cost me $15.

I called the parking office, explained the ridiculousness of the situation, and they would not budge. I told the lady "Let me have your name, because this $15 is going to save me alot of money. Whenever the school asked me for an alumni donation, I am going to tell them to shove it and I am going to give them your name as the reason why......" She gladly gave me her name, didn't give a crap and I haven't given them a dime since graduation.

A liberal city raising taxes on liberal kids.

Which means I don't really have a horse in this race. Everyone involved voted for Obama, bigger spending, and bigger taxes. May as well come sooner than later.

WOW......you sure took the long way to get to 'Obama's fault' but you eventually got there.

Why not, 90% of the students don't come from this city.

I think there should be a lifetime knowledge tax on college graduates. If you have a Phd you should have to pay $2000.00 per year. An MD should pay $8000 per year. Masters Degree $1200.00 per year. Bachelor Degree $800.00. Associates Degree $400.00 per year.

Another great tax idea. A carbon dioxide tax on individuals. Each person should pay a one time Carbon Dioxide Tax of $14000. If you wish to participate in a protest of any kind you can buy a carbon dioxide credit for $100.00 to pay for the added pollution coming out of your mouth.

Columbia just raises the sales tax by 2.5% (8.05% total) and adds another ~1.25% for restaurants and bars.

That way we're all screwed.

One more thing, If you hold your breath for the rest of your life you will get your money back, but I wouldn't hold my breath

This is a great idea, its only $150 bucks, and get Providence out of a bind without having to make an serious changes.

I say good for them, let me know how I can help.

California should do that to all the private universities in the state, we are a couple Billion short, all those rich kids going to private schools, thats our money.

I blame nothing on Obama. We live in a Democratic Republic, and deserve everything our government does to us.

A new tax on education.

HOPE and CHANGE

If we in Calif STOPPED all entitlements to illegals we could save 9 billion a year.

#7 Sniper> Isn't there such a thing as shrinking government?

Only when the entire economy collapses, it seems. Although I'd love to see the federal government shrink significantly, for several decades I've resigned that idea to "things to dream of when fully asleep".

Doesn't the commerce engendered by the presence of the students contribute significantly to the town budget? I wonder why they're having a shortfall. There doesn't seem to be an in-depth explanation for their malaise.

You need to wonder concerning the reallocation of priorities since the post-WWII era. This nation tapped a previously unused resource by providing advanced education to people previously excluded and we had a boom.

What was tuition at State Universities and community colleges, $50 per semester including student fees? Even allowing for inflation, the impoverishment of students to secure an education is a bad trend.

It seems that the government's priorities are such that developing a skill bank has become a low-priority, while impoverishing the community with frills, broad-based welfare programs and the like, has redeployed resources. And don't forget mandated education and medical care and welfare for illegal aliens. It seems that some people still think that there is a cornucopia and that there is sufficient product to fill every "need" that whimsy dictates.

If we in Calif STOPPED all entitlements to illegals we could save 9 billion a year.

Why should we do that, economic justice will be served, coming to a paycheck in your neighborhood to server you better!

Duh! There is no logic to any tax. All taxes are to raise revenue.

The only logic of taxing is that if you only raise the taxes on 10% of the people you only lose 10% of the votes.
