The emir of the Khaldan training camp in Afghanistan, al-Libi was one of hundreds of prisoners seized by Pakistani forces in December 2001, crossing from Afghanistan into Pakistan. Most of these men ended up in Guantnamo after being handed over (or sold) to US forces by their Pakistani allies, but al-Libi was, notoriously, rendered to Egypt by the CIA to be tortured on behalf of the US government.
In Egypt, he came up with the false allegation about connections between al-Qaeda and Saddam Hussein that was used by President Bush in a speech in Cincinnati on October 7, 2002, just days before Congress voted on a resolution authorizing the President to go to war against Iraq, in which, referring to the supposed threat posed by Saddam Hussein's regime, Bush said, "We've learned that Iraq has trained al-Qaeda members in bomb making and poisons and deadly gases."

For those who want the short version.
This guy was picked up by Pakistan, handed over to the CIA who rendered him as an unperson to Eygpt where he was tortured including stuck in a casket for 17 hours then taken out and beaten. At that point he told his interrogators that Iraq and AQ were trading info.
Bush mentions this LINK just prior to the Congressional Vote on Iraq in October 2002.
Powell mentions this LINK in his address to the UN.
The CIA discredits this LINK in February 2002! BEFORE the invasion.
Torture was used to gain intelligence to justify the invasion of Iraq.
Yep Torture works.
BTW this intel was the nexus that Cheney was most worried about.

correction Powell's nexus
A month before the Iraq invasion, Powell said to the United Nations Security Council, "What I want to bring to your attention today is the potentially much more sinister nexus between Iraq and the Al Qaeda terrorist network."

He kicked himself so hard that his ribs punctured his lungs and his spleen burst... sounds like a nasty case of suicide to me

Why does anyone give a damn? He's one less enemy who can be mobilized against us. Where was this "emir" "detained?" Good riddance of bad rubbish.
These American lefties just love people detained while training to kill Americans. This is either perversion or insanity.

Because 4,200 americans and 10's of thousands of iraqis have died as a result of this.
Some people just dont get it.

As long as a Republican is doing it, those people feel God is sanctioning it. Party First!

"was found dead of suicide in his cell,"
During the 1970s, the West German govt. reported that several of the terrorists they arrested died like that. Even West Germans wondered if they had "help". Their suicides did take care of multiple issues, though.

Like the sunni insurgents, the shia militias, the sharia loving folk.
Mission Accomplished!
Guess it would be bad form to remind afklcshaheen that CLINTON liberated millions of Kosovarans and Bosnians in about 3 days, with something like 2 KIA. Of course, nobody expects Republicans to win wars....

without even mentioning the millions of people freed.. -- #11 | Posted by afkabl2
Uh, yeah... "freed" of their homes, employment, their belongings...
June, 2007:
CNN) -- The number of refugees worldwide has gone up for the first time in five years, largely because of the exodus of more than 1 million Iraqis from their war-torn homeland in 2006, according to a U.N. report out Monday... The 1.2 million Iraqis who sought refuge in neighboring Jordan and Syria during the year were the biggest reason for the increase... www.cnn.com
The 1.2 million Iraqis who sought refuge in neighboring Jordan and Syria during the year were the biggest reason for the increase... www.cnn.com
Last week:
Violence in Iraq has waned enough for the United Nations to stop recommending that most Iraqis get automatic refugee status abroad, the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees said on Tuesday. http://www.washingtonpost.com/ wp-dyn/content/article/2009/ 05/05/AR2009050501331.html
Keep an eye on this. There were a handful of stories indicating the refugees didn't agree with the UN's assessment, and distraught about the possibility of having to return to Iraq.

Thr right can't be as dumb as the rightards on this site?
This has absolutely nothing to do about caring about this scummer.
Its to prove when you torture. You get bs info that leads to the death of 4000 americans and hundreds of thousands of iraqis
The dr right just won't admit to the FACT that torture is wrong because it doesn't work.
Obviously morality isn't enough a reason for the dr values party so here is a real case where torture not only didn't save lives. It ruined countless lives and families.
Good job
