They're not just talking about the ears. For those of us who watched the show in the 1960s (or during the countless reruns since), Nimoy's alter ego was the harbinger of a future in which logic would reign over emotion, and rational thought triumph over blind faith. He was a digital being in an analog world; the Pied Piper who led our generation into the Silicon Age.

FTA: The early Spock's only real vice was sardonic ire (often directed at McCoy). But this was also one of his most appealing qualities -- because Spock, as Jenkins gleefully asserts, is "someone who can bitch slap you with his brain." It's an ability shared by Obama -- who, unlike Spock, doesn't employ that superpower recreationally. His brilliance isn't a defense (or defended by sarcasm). While Obama embodies Spock's passion for reason, he adds the element of warmth.

Why didn't I know that? I've been a trekkie all me life!

I find that highly illogical.

Why didn't I know that?

Prolly cos you don't speak Swahili yet!

"Uhuru" is the Swahili word for Freedom.

When reading for the as yet un-named part for Gene Roddenberry Nichelle Nicholes brought a copy of the book "Black Uhuru" with her and explained wot it meant to the Great White Bird.

He liked it so much he feminized the word with the "a" ending and hired NN. Once the studio found out he'd hired a black woman for the show they tried to get him to fire her. Gene refused. On a funny side note because of this racial issue Nichelle ended up making more money than most of her fellow cast memebers cos they were on contract while she was making union rates.

Spud really got a kick out of the Scotty character.

He was an Irish-Canadian actor playing a Scotsman with a brogue thicker than an English fog.

His best scene was that bar fight in The Trouble with Tribbles where he witheld his temper after hearing Kirk described as a Denebian Slime Devil but then totally lost it when some Klingon shiathead dared to insult the Enterprise.

FTFA: "I am a first-generation 'Star Trek' fan, and I've long argued that many of my deepest political convictions emerged from my experience of watching the program as a young man growing up in Atlanta during the civil rights era," declares Henry Jenkins, co-director of the MIT comparative media studies program and author of "Convergence Culture." "In many ways, my commitment to social justice was shaped in reality by Martin Luther King and in fantasy by 'Star Trek.'"

There is indeed a moral center to the Star Trek universe that continues to elude many earthlings to this day. A society that has surpassed racism, greed and nationalism is a goal worth aiming for no matter how long we fail to achieve it.

To try and create a society that has taken advantage of science in order to cultivate further unities amongst the stars is a beautiful thing.

Leonidas was a "gun nut?"

Nope, but the wing-nuts who've currently latched on to that bit o' Latinese certainly seem to be.

Don't get Spud wrong. In his own weird way Spud's a bit of a gun nut hisself. Luff to shoot. Believe strongly in a citizens right to arm and defend oneself in an increasingly hostile world. Believe strongly that concealed carry saves more lives than it loses.

All that.

That sed and noted, gun registration, tighter controls to keep guns out of the hands of felons and head cases are simply common sensical approaches by Spud's lights. Encouraging (but not making mandatory) the use of gun safes and biometric devices to keep guns out of the hands of kids and criminals also makes sense to Spud

Somewhere between "destroy all guns everywhere" and "Right to arm bears and shoot people in the back" lies a safe, sane, sensible approach to the issue that's being shouted over by extremists at both ends of the debate's spectrum.

Rtards are cynically fueling the fire about the whole "Obama is coming to take out guns" nonsense and people who were not altogether that stable to begin with are now getting nuttier by the day.

Which in turn fuels the fire on the other side of the debate in a viscious circle of feces tossing.

Not good.

That's Spud's point.

Apocalyto is a very good movie. You should see it.

I saw the new Star Trek movie last night. It's okay but I would recommend waiting until it comes out on cable to see it. it's definitely not worth $10/head.

We have a drive-in that we go to, so the whole car can get in for 18 dollars. Plus you get two movies.

The other one was The Soloist. If you enjoy a film that has a story with some real depth, I recommend this movie highly. As usual, Robert Downey JR and Jamie Fox both do excellent performances. This movie will miss the usual awards mentions because it doesn't do what this kind of movie is supposed to do in hollywood-land.

Next thing you know they'll be registering the dreaded car antenna.

No dude. Dumbya was an empty suit. A puppet for Cheney and his band of merry neo-con-artists.

Obama, unlike Bush, writes a lot of his own speeches and delivers them to great effect.

His hemming and hawing while speaking off the cuff indicates that he thinking and choosing his next words carefully which is a sign of his intelligence and leadership.

All pols use teleprompters and every time you reiterate that rtard sound byte you just end up looking even dumber than you did when you first opened yer mouth.

This movie sure is generating a lot of unambivalent reaction. But I'm still ambivalent about going to see it in a theatre. Guess that's what happens when one is a fence-sitting independent.

Spock would not be trying to pass Barry's illogical bullshit budget that plays to the emotions of Demotribbles.

www.youtube.com

Personally I give him an F- on this speech!

www.youtube.com

www.youtube.com

Here's a couple of those great speeches Obama must have wrote himself!

To be honest, I didn't wade thru this entire thing, as I am sure those who LOVE Obama will agree, and those who HATE Obama will think it was a travesty... so no opinions will be changed.

I just wanted to state that I have seen a lot more of Obama and his administration playing on peoples "hopes" and "fears" and such emotions than on the logic if his ideas.

Doesn't say his ideas are right or wrong, only that he is not using LOGIC to sell them. I don't remember Spock ever telling the Capt to "HOPE" that the numbers were right... other than that stupid sceen in Voyage Home... what a silly waste of a few hours...

I just wanted to state that I have seen a lot more of Obama and his administration playing on peoples "hopes" and "fears" and such emotions than on the logic if his ideas.

Spud finds Obama to be far more logical in his speech and ideas than any of his immediate predeccessors, certainly. In terms of selling his ideas to the masses? Americans do logic about as well as they do nuance, unfortunately. Inspirational political speeches must always have an emotional subtext that is graspable by even the most LCD listener if you want a high degree of success. Obama understands that almost intuitively and hones his message accordingly.

Anything less wouldn't be logical.

Be Well.

K, that's a FF.

Actually went and saw Star Trek today at a matinee showing.

Good flick.

Spud can reccomend.

Plotholes you can fly a starship through?

Laws yes.

Set yer implausibility meter to it's lowest levels or better yet leave it at home.

That sed, it worked. It was a pretty cool idea to have a re-imagining of the original origin with fresh new faces. All comic fans know that the origin issues are the ones that sell best and this was a new origin for the franchise. Starting a new canon not bound by the old one gives old fans a new beginning and new fans a chance to get in on the ground floor, so to speak. It mostly succeeded as a highly enjoyable blend of the beloved and familiar mixed with a real sense of "we can go anywhere from here".

The main actors are all very believable and highly likable in their roles. New Spock and Kirk rawk. Ms Uhura kicked ass. Bones musta been channeling Deforrest or sommat cos his performance was so spot on. Sulu and Checkov totally pulled their weight in their limited roles. Best comic potential Spud found was in the new Scotty.

Nimoy had a nice quiet understated perfomance with quiet humour, one that he managed to pull off despite the highly illogical script at times.

It was actually a pretty emotionally satisfying movie albeit a little too coincidence-laden at times. A fast paced and fun popcorn movie with plenty of action, pathos, techno-upgrades and laughs that's fit for both old fans and new ones alike.

Yes. Want more of these, please.

Oh, and a coke and some popcorn.

Large. Real butter. Ta.

Be Well.
