Hmm. Wouldn't post the entire post last time. Here goes again ..
So how does one make sure that your router is secure?
MURPHY
Linksys routers do not come with good details on how to secure your wireless network. If you own a Linksys router, at the minimum do this:
Connect one of your computers via Ethernet cable to your wireless router. Open a web browser and type http://192.168.1.1 It will ask for a password. If you've never changed it, ignore the "USER" field and type "admin" in the PASSWORD field. This will open access to your router settings.
Click the "Wireless" link on the Main horizontal menu bar.
A sub menu will appear below it. Click "Wireless Security".
At "Security Mode" select "WEP". Then generate WEP keys by clicking the "GENERATE" button. Copy and paste these numbers in Word and print them out. Tape them to the bottom of your router so you'll have easy access to them later. You'll need these numbers for any computer you're going to use wirelessly. They should ask you for a WEP key number. Leave the TX key at '1'.
Next step, click "Administration" on the right side of the menu bar. You'll see Password (and confirm Password) fields with a long line of dots. The number of dots mean nothing, because the factory default password is 'ADMIN' if you've never changed it. Delete the dots in the Password and Confirm fields and type in a new password you'll remember in both fields (then write it down on your Linksys installation sheet or on your WEP key printout so you'll have access to it if you forget it).
Once you have that done, no one should be able to cruise by and access your network. Linksys should be more on the ball in providing instructions in their installation guide on how to do all that, but they don't, so a lot of people never secure their wireless network.
Hope that helps.
