Hmm. Yeah. If the U.S. Government has pushed harder to research cancer treatments, he would be alive? Billions has been spent around the world researching cancer, and tons of headway has been made. From what I read, in the next few years tons of new medical treatments will be available.

I'm sorry. The government can do an okay job, when managed correctly, of making sure drug companies don't kill us all or do horribly unethical things during research, but I don't think they could really have done much more to speed things up. Advancements in simulations and other computer technologies have been speeding up medical research these days.

All technologies grow at a smooth exponential pace, so spending more in the 70's and 80's wouldn't have made a huge difference compared to what we have now since it would have been bottlenecked waiting for other technologies to catch up.

I think it's a fair paraphrase of what Specter did say, which was to personalize the death of his colleague in a pretty strange and crass way. He said that if the Republicans had pursued Nixon's war on cancer, Kemp would be alive. That's a pretty direct attack on his former buds. And also bizarre. He ought to know cancer will enough by now, as a survivor, to recognize the difficulty of finding cures for different cancers -- no matter how much money is thrown at the problem.

Our Courts deny the use of statistical evidence, requiring every case to be tried on its own merits, making Corporate crime nearly impossible to prove and overburdening the Court system in the process. I liked what I knew of Jack Kemp although I disagreed with some of his political stances.

He was one of the "old guard" of Republicans who could disagree without coming off as a hypocritical asshole like Newt Gingrich or any of the current class who massively increased the size of government and debt, cheated on the wives while at the same time railing against Clinton for his sexual cheating, but nonetheless now pule about debt, deficits and 'family values' despite their horrible record on both topics. Reagan and the two Bush's account for all but $600 Billion of our $11 Trillion national debt BTW
