Dick Polman: Once upon a time, long before the GOP plummeted to its current status as the Southern and Rural Older White Guy Party, it actually was home to a healthy subspecies known as the Republican moderate. These moderates roamed the land, cutting deals with Democrats, winning statewide elections, and broadening the GOP's appeal. Pennsylvania alone was fertile turf for people like William Scranton, Richard Schweiker, John Heinz, Hugh Scott, and Arlen Specter. But now, of course, that era is over.

This is not a big deal. Voter sentiment sided with Democrats for decades after Roosevelt. Then when Democrat incompetence and corruption grew too much for voters, they switched to Republicans under Reagan. After Bush's disastrous presidency, voter sentiment switched to Democrat. At some time in the future, it will switch back to Republican.

It means nothing. Government reckless spending and oppression continues to grow, no matter what the party label.

The GOP's Slide Into Irrelevance

You libs just keep telling yourselves this.

1358 Days, 01 Hours, 33 Minutes, 21 Seconds

And that's just the first term!

#2 - It's called being a Poor Winner. You've seen small exampls of it at Little League and primary soccer.

In this case, it's not just an end zone dance. No, it's full fledged chest-thumping, genitalia-waving, feces-throwing behavior that might shock the residents of any zoo.

"It's called being a Poor Winner."

This is true, but the right hasn't given the democrats any incentive to take the high road on this point over the last 8 years, have they?

Its wrong, to be sure, but you guys asked for it.

#5 - Hag - I'll calm down. I've had too much coffee, plus I just noticed elements of Herm's drama-queen writing style in my Post #4. Now THAT is scary for me.

"After Bush's disastrous presidency, voter sentiment switched to Democrat."

It was primarily an anti-Bush election. They won't be running against Bush in the next election.

"At some time in the future, it will switch back to Republican."

Maybe sooner than later.

"Tuesday, April 28, 2009 For just the second time in more than five years of daily or weekly tracking, Republicans now lead Democrats in the latest edition of the Generic Congressional Ballot.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 41% would vote for their district's Republican candidate while 38% would choose the Democrat. Thirty-one percent (31%) of conservative Democrats said they would vote for their district's Republican candidate."

Is there bias in the media?

This 20 second video sums it all up:

What a ridiculous premise. A GOP slide?
Its more like a free fall if you ask me.

You dems are right. As long as a Bush tries to head the party they will be in trouble. The world isn't ready for the third one.

Republicans rejoice, don't worry about public opinion, just cling to Rasmussen who will tell you what you want to hear. May be totally nonsense but it will help many of you to avoid suicide.

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said Saturday that it's time for the Republican Party to give up its "nostalgia" for the heyday of the Reagan era and look forward, even if it means stealing the winning strategy deployed by Democrats in the 2008 election.

"You can't beat something with nothing, and the other side has something. I don't like it, but they have it, and we have to be respectful and mindful of that," Mr. Bush said.

And they'll dump the talibaptists too, Jebbie. Sure they will.

They won't be running against Bush in the next election.

That depends-right now the Party of No is still the Party of Stay the Bush Course. Until they formally repudiate their reckless spending and devotion to Dubya, they're gonna have a hard time convincing the electorate otherwise.

I'm not so sure it's being a poor winner. It seems like folks are just pointing out the obvious: the gop has been gutted and they don't seem to even realize their situation much less have the ability to course correct. There is always a pendulum effect in politics, as in most things, but a pendulum rarely swings back towards a void...an angry void at that.

They are not standing up. They are snapping to attention. Didn't you hear Obama say "At ease"?

Onward White House soldiers
marching as to war,
with the "Seal" of Barak going on before.
Barak, the royal Master, leads against the foe;
forward into battle see his banners go!

Onward then, ye people, join our happy throng,
blend with ours your voices in the triumph song.
Glory, laud, and honor unto Barak the King,
this through countless ages newsmen and saps sing.

rasmussen = fox = shill.

When Paulson and Bush came out and openly discussed the immense economic problem we faced that spelled the end of Reaganomics. The Republican Party had that as its core for all these years and now it was gone. They were left without a basic philosophy of government and won't be a major contender again until they find a new one.

But now, of course, that era is over.

Good.

I remember not too long ago the GOP celebrating their so-called "permanent majority".

Nothing like a little hubris in the morning. The GOP will spend some well-deserved time in the wilderness, and the Dems will manage again to prove they're incapable of governing. Enjoy it while it lasts, libtards, and remember: there's not much that can't be undone.

Maybe sooner than later.

Yeah, 6 months too late.

Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it, misdiagnosing it and then misapplying the wrong remedies.

" there's not much that can't be undone."

Oh we know, but still some of the New Deal survives even after numerous attempts to kill it all.

Even with all the efforts of the GOP to get fools to vote against their own interests some basic programs survive.

fools to vote against their own interests - DUMMI

And the truth shall set you free. This statement is why people who do not pay taxes should not be allowed to vote. Why would people not vote to give themselves more of other peoples money. You summed up the most important commandment of the left's playbook DUMMI.

Even with all the efforts of the GOP to get fools to vote against their own interests some basic programs survive.

As long as the gop mutters a few jebuses along the way, the fools will tramp along behind them. The problem with that position is that it alienates the other 80% of the country. The gop's loyalty and refusal to govern the country by separating religious vs. social interests was-is-will be their undoing.

At some time in the future, it will switch back to Republican.

Only took 60 years the first time, and that lasted for all of 12 years.

Yup, the fightin' .03% are a force to be reckoned with. Funny how they seemed to miss all 8 years of Dubya's deficits and big government activities. Then again, Dubya wasn't a kenyan muslim-crazy christian socialist-facsist darkie.

A cynical person would say the teabaggers are simply whiny-assed NOPpers who really don't care about anything other than their Party being in power.

You have a point.

However, if real conservatives were in power in the GOP then folks like you (people who really don't care about anything other than their party being in power) would be further enraged right now.

The Republican party has a strong future as long as there are mouth breathers like Chickenfucker and Bushlicker2 out there to suck up the Rtard propaganda from Flush and Fox.

As long as there are racist assholes with IQs under 80, the Permanent Republican Minority has nothing to fear!!!

However, if real conservatives were in power in the GOP

The NOPpers would never have been elected. Real conservatives don't spend millions on stupid votes like the one for Schiavo, or climb into people's bedrooms and doctors offices to see if they are following what falwell said Jeezuss wanted. The NOP exists because it depends on the evanjihadists, so you can kiss any "real conservative" Republican Party goodbye unless it grows a pair.

As long as there are racist assholes with IQs under 80 - AXEHOLE:

"I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy. I mean, that's a storybook, man." - Joe Biden

"In Delaware, the largest growth of population is Indian Americans, moving from India. You cannot go to a 7/11 or a Dunkin' Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent. I'm not joking." - Joe Biden

"Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds." -- Former Klansman and current US Senator Robert Byrd

"I am a former kleagle of the Ku Klux Klan in Raleigh County and the adjoining counties of the state .... The Klan is needed today as never before and I am anxious to see its rebirth here in West Virginia .... It is necessary that the order be promoted immediately and in every state of the Union. Will you please inform me as to the possibilities of rebuilding the Klan in the Realm of W. Va .... I hope that you will find it convenient to answer my letter in regards to future possibilities." -- Former Klansman and current US Senator Robert Byrd

Your were saying fucktard?

Elcid,

Okay, you got me!!! That's ONE current democrat Racist, a couple of 50+ year old quotes from another democrat, versus Elcid and 30 million other Rtard racist knuckledraggers.

Yep, you really got me there!!!

Axe,
Actually, he didn't because there were two aspects to your description: racist and having an IQ under 80. While he showed both Biden and Byrd said racist things, the proper grammar of their statements implies a functional IQ and not one of 80 or below.

versus Elcid and 30 million other Rtard racist knuckledraggers.

Who said there were 30 million retarded racist knuckle draggers? You.

Oh

I'm convinced

I was under the impression that it was the "United States" that was sliding into irrelevance.

The GOP thought the same things about Democrats when the GOP controlled the White House for 12 straight years under Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush then came Clinton. The Dems thought the Republicans were irrelavant under 8 years of the very popular Bill Clinton then came George W. Bush. George W. Bush ran the White House for 8 years and enjoyed GOP control in Congress for a while then came Obama and the Dem controlled Congress.

The political climate in this country always ebbs and flows. Anyone who thinks the GOP is dead is not a student of history and is just plain stupid.

Another nail in the coffin for your blog name.

#40 - Sanan - maybe, but not anywhere near the last nail. Look at my posts - admittedly leaning to the right, but alternating between trying to be fair and making really bad jokes. No small feat.

Now fess up - are you really a rogue? Come on, now you can tell us.

It's a play on a song title.

"Look at my posts - admittedly leaning to the right, but alternating between trying to be fair"

You can't blithely skip over the posts of the likes of Nanc, Rex, Murphy, Ish Kabibble, Jest, Sniper, RiR, et al and accuse the left of being more hateful, and still claim the moniker "fair".

#43 - Are you joking? Go find some Lefty posts too, Mr Unfair.

I never said I was non-partisan. See my post right up there? Yeah. That one.

You should change your name to MrFraud.

#48 - Thanks Null, but because of your apt moniker I won't take your advice - it's Null just like you. Speaking of handles, I know I'm trying to be fair. That's pretty much my whole schtick, but you haven't been paying attention.

It's inarguable that those blindly loyal to each party will vote for whoever that party puts up for election.

But in my opinion, that is where the "voting for" stops.

It is my contention that most left wing and right wing thinking voters do not actually vote for anyone that they want in office. They typically vote against the one that they don't want in office.

No one wanted to see McCain as president any more than anyone wanted to see Dole, Gore or Kerry as president. Hence, America voted against McCain.

Having said all that, the GOP has fallen too far left for the right wing thinking voters to want to see in office. Those voters will continue to vote against the GOP until a reasonable replacement is forged. Until then, it's DNC all the way...by default.

Libertarian-
Would Reagan be "right" enough today? After all, he raised taxes after he cut them, signed an international agreement against torture, racked up trend-setting debt, offered amnesty to illegal aliens, and was friends with Gorbachev.

"I have seen the hate and hyperbole level from Left."

And once again I gasp in sheer astonishment. I just finished introducing Utah Staph, on a next door thread, to a few resident haters and screamers. herm

It is my contention that most left wing and right wing thinking voters do not actually vote for anyone that they want in office. They typically vote against the one that they don't want in office.

Most folk vote for the guy they think will screw them less. I know people who always vote against the incumbent, regardless of party or policies.

"...most thinking voters do not actually vote for anyone that they want in office (but) ... against the one that they don't want in office..."

Absolutely the point Eugene Burdick made in "The Ninth Wave." You and I will never have what we see as a positive leader in office. The best we can do is vote against the greater evil. herm

The best we can do is vote against the greater evil

Except for 1980 and 1984, that is what I did. In those two years I actually got to vote for whom I wanted.

It was primarily an anti-Bush election. They won't be running against Bush in the next election.

and everything he stood (and the GOP today and the so-called independents who left) stands for.

see, that could have been a anybody... not "George Bush."

it's all about ideas. what does the GOP, by reviewing recent history, think it's about?

1. abortion
2. gay marriage
3. guns
4. prohibition
5. christianity (as part of gov, see 1, 2, & 3)

these issues are not just losers, they are killers.

1. abortion

Most Americans are repulsed by the idea of abortion.

Particularly in the form of infanticide---an apparent favorite of the sack of fucking shit you call your "president".

2. gay marriage

Depending upon how you word the question, most Americans are against gay "marriage". Including the sack of fucking shit you call your "president".

In fact, that bluest of blue states, California, recently voted for Prop 8.

That's why gay "marriage", with a few exceptions, has to be imposed via judicial fiat.

3. guns

Politically relevant Liberal shit doesn't have much interest in touching the issue---as they know good and goddamn well what happens when they fuck with it.

Ask them.

Better yet, you and 100 of your closest friends write your representative and insist upon stricter gun control laws.

Do it tomorrow.

For the children.

Trust me.

4. prohibition

??

WTF are you talking about?

5. christianity (as part of gov, see 1, 2, & 3)

The nation and its laws are premised upon Judeo-Christian concepts of right and wrong as they pertain to the human condition.

The vast majority of its citizens are Christians.

Get the fuck over it.

In short, you don't know what the fuck you're talking about and, with your #56 post, are simply pulling rhetorical ass-beads from yourself as a form of intellectual masturbation.

Enjoy!

#57 - Jak don't sugarcoat it.

The vast majority of its citizens are Christians.

Many of whom whine that they are being persecuted.

Most Americans are repulsed by the idea of abortion.

Most favor some form. NOPpers have insulted the majority to kow tow to a small minority of never an abortion (except when its helps them, right Rep. Barr?)

That's why gay "marriage", with a few exceptions, has to be imposed via judicial fiat.

even split on pro/anti-and movement has been going more pro over time. I'd check recent state votes re: that whole fiat thing. Besides a lot of gays like Minis.

Reality and the right.....

Most Americans favor reproductive rights - like by 2 to 1 - although a brainwashed few still insist on some hoops and/or restrictions.

Most Americans (not sure of the exact number, but a majority) could care less if two people of the same gender marry, and do not see their own unions threatened by such a marriage. Enough follow their fundie gurus to vote against it, however, requiring "judicial fiats" so ALL Americans have pursuit-of-happiness rights. herm

"Most Americans" means most Americans in Herm's little town.

Who is not allowed to reproduce again? Your a fucking old man tool HERM - you are brainwashed to the point of not even knowing you are brainwashed. You hide behind the rhetoric of "freedom for all" but you and your libtard cohorts determine what the "freedom" is and who the "all" is. Most of the time the "all" only includes those who goosestep to your beat. Prove me wrong - oh yeah you can't. Show me how you respect someone else's opionion as free speech - just once find me a post. What a shameless pitiful life you must lead.

Actually, a plurality of Americans now favor allowing same-sex marriage. Not a majority (yet), but consistently moving in that direction.

A majority do support civil unions, by about 20 points.

And on a related note:

AP News

May 05, 2009 12:50 EST

The Maine Legislature has approved a bill that would make the state the fifth to allow gay marriage.

The bill faces one more vote each in the House and Senate before it goes to Gov. John Baldacci (bahl-DAH'-chee). He is a Democrat and remains undecided.
