LAHORE, Pakistan (CNN) -- Angry protests are a common sight in Pakistan. Crowds often gather to denounce the United States or the Pakistani government, which critics accuse of being an American puppet.

But in the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore this week, several hundred protesters gathered on a scorching day to take on a very different target: the Taliban.

"I will fight them to my last breath and the last drop of my blood in my body. I'm not scared," vowed newspaper publisher Jugnu Mohsin.

She was leading a crowd of several hundred students, artists, writers and others, chanting "the Taliban is the enemy of Islam" in Urdu.

A week before the clashes erupted, a leader of the MQM political party, which represents the Mahajir community in Karachi, said his supporters would fight back against what he called the "Talibanization" of his city."

glad to see some on the ground resistence to these backward ass fucks

My money's on the Taliban....

Never underestimate the power of students and music to overthrow governments.

Flower Power

Nice story, though it's disturbing to me, as both a student and a musician. Makes me thankful for living here.

I'll drink to the ballsiness, safety, and success of the protesters.

Oh yeah...students, music and drugs. Can't forget about the "flower power."

Can they do it without Neil Young? Let's send him over and toss in Joan Baez for good measure

beat cha, kanrei *grin*

I like Neil Young and Joan Baez...Diamons and Rust?

How about Neil Diamond and Joan Osbourne?

It was close, but I just beat you out =P

Never underestimate the power of students and music to overthrow governments.

I don't like Neil Young except when he was with C, S&N.

Whine rock, I call his genre

Oh yeah...students, music and drugs.

They need to be judicious in their drug use. Smoke pot, of course, but don't do so much acid that you lose track of your goals in a purple haze.

"Flower Power"

Of course, everyone knows that the only natural enemy of a brutal extremist group is a drum circle and patchouli stink ass.

I put my money on the students and music.

Taliban has the drugs (heroin) remember.

Our peace revolution experience was against puritanical robots, who thoughts Elvis was provocative, sideburns and beards meant you were you lazy, but generally were armchair moralists.

hmmm...Guy armed with guitar vs armed guys intent on killing people who listen to music and stone women for walking unescorted? no brainer...

Unless that Guitar is filled with agent orange ready to be spread generously over SWAT, its just a matter of time for most of Pakistan to get sucked into it...

Of course, everyone knows that the only natural enemy of a brutal extremist group is a drum circle and patchouli stink ass.

When that brutal extremist group sees its base of popular support dry up, it might just begin to recognize them as a worthy adversary.

By the way, patchouli doesn't smell that bad - the problem comes when you slather yourself in patchouli oil to conceal the fact that you haven't bathed in days and have an ounce of skunk in your pocket. And there's nothing wrong with that ounce of skunk, either.

It is written that he who holds the youth has the future so come now children of the Beast; be strong and shout at the Devil

Then perhaps these Pak-hippies can do what American hippies couldn't.

Is that from a song? If it isn't, it should be.

Motley Crue off Shout at the Devil called In the Beginning

In the beginning
Good always overpowered the evils
Of all man's sins...
But in time
The nations grew weak
And our cities fell to slums
While evil stood strong
In the dusts of hell
Lurked the blackest of hates
For he whom they feared
Awaited them... Now many many lifetimes later
Lay destroyed, beaten, beaten down,
Only the corpses of rebels
Ashes of dreams
And blood stained streets
It has been written
"Those who have the youth
Have the future"
So come now, children of the beast
Be strong
And Shout at the Devil

Grrr... it cut off my post.

Then perhaps these Pak-hippies can do what American hippies couldn't. I think the hippies here would have been much more successful if they hadn't been as wacked out.

Can the peace pipe bring peace?
I'll inhale, but I won't hold my breath.

heres the thing

pakistani's main stream music is very patriotic.

unwritten law that every band in pakistan has at least one song about pakistan.

when the musicians go against the taliban in a nationalistic way, so will the general public.

i LOVE the power of music.

So do I. A clear example of how powerful music can be is the earworm. How many times have you had a song you hate stuck in your head for days?

I'll inhale, but I won't hold my breath.

It works better if you do.

when the musicians go against the taliban in a nationalistic way, so will the general public

One can only hope that is what happens.

We could send them the sheet music to "Hair" if it would help.

"we're not going to take this" - twisted sister

I think we should send Rosie O'Donnell, Bill O'Reilly and Michael Jackson to Pakistan and tell them we won't take them back until the Taliban gives up.

I'll inhale, but I won't hold my breath.

It works better if you do.

I'm not convinced that has anything more than oxygen deprivation thrown in the mix... which might work, but... I think the active ingredients are absorbed instantly as it is... could be wrong though...
we had a theory cigarettes increase the high by 22%. course, we were high at the time, and other theories crafted at the time have, on occasion, proven to be false.

"Never underestimate the power of students and music to overthrow governments."

Those relatively bloodless coups occur when government troops are reluctant to kill their own countrymen.

The Taliban will slaughter all these fools without thinking twice, tape it and beat off to it.

I'm not saying the Taliban can't be defeated. But you need people who are either better equipped, better trained or more willing to kill and die to do it. That's not too hard but students and musicians have to stop being students and musicians before they can become what they need to be in order to win.

sully
the students aren't going to fight
the military of pakistan will

but the mood of the people have to be for this before the military will be made to go into some seriously high end taliban beating

and the stuff in karachi with the mqm can't be underestimated.

they are a political party, but are heavily armed.

Jugnu Mohsin.
Wife of editor/owner of "Daily Times" newspaper, Najam Sethi.

Daliy Time is regarded as a tabloid and bottom-feeder when it comes to news.

Slow news day so wifey went out with her gal-pals and made some news for hubby.

If there had been a real taliban threat, they would be dead by now. LOL

But I do have to say.. this bitch, "Jugnu Mohsin".. like all news people, has a nose for picking the winning side.

If the Taliban had been winning she would be in a burka marching for them.

No morals, no principles.

Music and idiot hippies won't kill the taliban and all who think like them.

What kills them... proven and guaranteed... is broadband internet and cable tv.

Wherever there is broadband internet, they drop dead.

Think about it.

Which is why we are bringing fast internet... specially wireless (first thing these taliban types do is cut cables).... from the cities to the rural and small town areas.

Show me a place where some islamic-types are making some noise... and I will show you a place that doesn't have broadband-internet available.

In Swat... before the peace deal (which forced the Taliban to leave the area)... the very first thing they did to people, was take their mobile phones away because "it's got to have music on it".

They HATE mobile phones (all phones get internet on them and take pics) and they HATE our hundreds of TV channels. They, of course HATE internet too (when they can figure out what it is). LOL

It exposes them, that's why.

Point is... NOBODY can stop communication/internet tech from advancing and spreading. This is like a runaway virus.. it doesn't stop. And Pakistan is a world leader in adopting new communications tech (3rd fastest growth in mobile phones after China and India).

That is why I am sure the Taliban have no future... neither in Pakistan... nor anywhere else.

Though I have to agree with Kliferd... when the big acts start making music that specifically targets taliban-types... it is remarkably effective.

Previously rock bands like "Junoon" (two Pakistanis and their one American buddy) brought down the Govt. of Benazir Bhutto.

So they do have enormous power.

www.youtube.com

www.youtube.com

The one American member of the band, sold his truck to come to Pakistan and be a superstar.

The band (they have separated since) was number one in Asia at one time (including Japan).

i want to join a band in pakistan so bad

toss you know any pak singers that need a modern rock/metal/punk guitar player with a keen sense for song writing?

No... but I know a bunch of guys who need a chick as a lead singer.

Can you dress up like a chick?

ALL RIGHT

musicians and students

I can see it now

string players with little blue granny glasses

"whoa dude...whats up with this..

or something like that

but it does make sense.

first thing assholes like taliban do is regulate or do away with music and art and education.

if you all are waiting on some sort of line drawn where I link this behavior with shit from the obama white house...its not coming....YET....

What kills them... proven and guaranteed... is broadband internet and cable tv.

That's about the smartest thing I have heard you say, Tosser. I noticed here in Khandahar, not alot of phones with cameras, but alot of old style cell phones. Not the same in Bagram and Kabul.

"the students aren't going to fight
the military of pakistan will

but the mood of the people have to be for this before the military will be made to go into some seriously high end taliban beating"

I hope so. I was just saying that the notion of students and musicians somehow defeating heavily armed jihadists may be very romantic to some people but it is entirely delusional.
