Glad to see I'm not the only nerd that's excited about this movie! Thanks for the link, Corky

saw the midnight showing

awesome

I've read a couple of not so good reviews too, but I saw an almost final cut last week and it was a pretty good movie.

As long as brett ratner wasn't allowed within 10 miles of this movie, it coulnt be that bad... But the dick donner input gives me pause...

Hey, an L.A. Times review!

It is NOT Wolverine! I am sure it is a fun movie for anyone who doesn't know the story, but it is not Wolverine! Nothing about this tale is right according to the story it is based one and, before anyone attacks me saying "it is only a comic book," this is no different than anyone else who read a book turned into a movie being upset that the movie had nothing to do with the book it was based on.

P.S. - the original X-Men were Cyclops, Beast, Iceman, Angel, Jean, and Professor X.

kanrei

all comic books have alternate story arcs

this is just an alternate story arc...

besides wolverine is 5'3
and hugh jackman is almost 6 feet tall

its a different wolverine in more ways then just story.

its still a good movie

I suggest a boycott, fasting, and hiring Michelle Bachmann to represent your views.

Also, a "Wolverine Sacred History Destroyed!" sign might help.

Just kidding, K. But they did the same thing to the original movie.

In this one, btw, there is no Sabertooth, there is only Victor Creed.

I realize that Kliff, but this movie is based on none of them.
SPOILERS TO FOLLOW SO READ AT YOUR OWN RISK

Wolverine and Sabertooth are now brothers? WTF?
Wolverine is only 160 years old now? WTF?
Wolverine in Japan in the 1600's is a major part of the character- the wife he had that was killed was Japanese and killed in about 1660 and not by Sabertooth.
His name is Logan!
He did not have claws as a child, but they were added in the Weapon X program- his only powers are rage, smell, and healing and not bones, just flesh.

Gambit was not part of Weapon X and in fact was not even born at teh time of the Weapon X program

It is funny how we understand when a LOTR fan gets upset when the movie strays from the book, but we mock the comic fans for wanting the movie to remain true to the story. It is our fandom that made a movie even possible for G-d's sake, so why shit on us just cause we are comic readers?

I think one just did.

Having never seen or read X-Man, I can only assume you're making some infantile, pea-brained reference to something sexual.

Did it make you giggle and feel all oogey inside?

Sure it did.

I think JRR Tolkien and the writer of the Wolverine comic are comparable talents, literary icons both, yes.

There hasn't been a whole hell of a lot of effort to stick to the original story through any of these movies. Wolverine was a sometimes wannbe X-Man who showed up occasionally at the first in the comics.

It made one of his legs tingle and the other jangle.

Talents? open to debate
Comperable literary icons? No
Comperable Icons? Yes
American Mythology? Yes
Strong fanbase support? Yes

And I would/ could argue that Frank Miller is as big an influence on pop culture today as Tolken was in the 30's when he first wrote the saga.

Wife and I plan to see it tonight.

Looking forward to it but frankly I'm more excited about Transformers and Terminator.

Terminator looks really good actually. I was shocked. I am sure this movie will be great to any non-diehard fan out there, which is a shame because it is the fans that made Wolverine worthy of having a movie.

more spoilers

gambit isn't in weapon x in the movie either
besides in the movie weapon x is specifically wolverine.. not the project, the x stands for the roman numeral 10

so there is a weapon 11 as well

i agree wolverine was in feudal japan

but this particular movie wolverine is not a martial artist, lol, like the comic book character
and yes the claws were definately added in the program, but yea here he has bone claws, it still works.

there are many things that are different
but the attitude of the comic book is still there.

I saw Gambit in the trailer and every reviewer is talking about him. I think the guy from Friday Night Lights is playing him or something.

he's in the movie

I am going to wait for the DVD and go see that new 3d cartoon sci fi movie instead.

Oh, I misread what you wrote. I thought you said "Gambit isn't in Weapon X the movie either. I missed the second in.

kanrei
i'm telling you its good

and the sabertooth is done awesome, the actor did a great job.

Been a big Liev fan for years.

I'm not a huge X-Men fan but it doesn't make sense for it to be bone claws. I mean aren't his claws supposed to be in destructible or whatever? The movie isn't even compatible with the other movies. Which is kind of lame. I was going to see this in theaters I'll probably just Netflix it, and go see Star Trek when that comes out.

he has bone claws until they fuse the adamantium then they become metal and indestructable.

they are destructable as bone claws but he has regenerative powers

and the movie IS compatible with the other movies.

i'm gonna see star trek AND transformers AND terminator in the theater.

Gotta love the summer movie season.

SWINE FLU! SWINE FLU!!
STAY HOME!
DON'T FLY!
NO TACOS FOR YOU!

they are destructable as bone claws but he has regenerative powers

He doesn't have regenerative powers on his bones which is why he needed the adamantium in the first place. According to the comics, Stryker snuck the claws in during the procedure. He originally had nails, like Sabertooth.

kanrei... i agree

thats the one thing i wish they did different.

I wonder if Magneto is still going to be a Holocaust survivor or if they are going to change that for his movie since it would make him 80 today. Without the Holocaust aspect of his story, Magneto is just a psycho monster; with it, he is a man who is seeing a second Holocaust start against Mutants and feels he can stop this one where he couldn't the first one.

i'm gonna see star trek AND transformers AND terminator in the theater.

Terminator and Transformers? Spud's gonna wait fer the vids to come out.

Star Trek and this one are definitely Big Screen adventures.

Did Hollywood fark up the origin of Wolverine hgere?

No doubt, it was kinda inevitable.

Spud never goes into these things expecting a purist approach.

Even "Watchmen", which Spud has now watched six times, had some slight alterations to it (Most notably the "No squid" ending and the "Comedian killed JFK" thang) but they weren't enuff to prevent Spud from enjoying the thing in all it's morally ambiguous glory.

Frank Miller does rawk out loud.

Be Well.

Spud...
If you have not seen it, buy the "Watchmen Full Motion Comic." It is amazing and has the full story...5 hours long!

Maybe they could find some other mass genocide for him to have gone through. It happens with more regularity than I like to think about. Though the holocaust was particularly awful.

The "sympathetic villian" is why I always liked Marvel over DC. Lex Luthor just wanted to rule the world where Magneto just wanted to secure his place in it.

Hugh Jackman is our modern day clint eastwood.

I just saw the worst movie he ever made and it wasn't completely unwatchable. Australia.

He was pretty good but nicole kidman has got to go.

Van Helsing was pretty unwatchable. I made it about 30 minutes before turning to watch static.

Sounds good, Kanrei.

Spud's always looking fer good vids or books.

Spud relationship with the X-Men was kinda off and on.

Mostly Spud was a fan of alternative comics, underground comics like the Freak Brothers, self published comics like Cerebus, Japanese manga reprints like Lone Wolf and Cub and, of course, Omaha the Cat Dancer (rawr!) but in between all of that stuff Spud read quite a few X-men and they were, in Spud's rarely humble opinion, the best of the mostly ridicuous Super Hero genre with the possible exception of Alan Moore's takeover of Swamp Thing from issue 20 called "American Gothic".

First comic book series Spud totally fell for waaaaay back in the day was Iron Fist

A wicked cool origin tale there, btw.

Be Well.

Van Helsing was pretty unwatchable. I made it about 30 minutes before turning to watch static.

Agreed, that and the Brothers Grimm thing were pure dreck.

Be Well.

I was influenced by my older brother's reading habits as I stole his comic when I was young. Batman and X-Men were by big two, followed very close by Spiderman. Only indie comics I read were Watchmen in college (after everyone told me I had to) and Elfquest.

Agreed, that and the Brothers Grimm thing were pure dreck.

That's okay because Jackman wasn't in that one.

Grimm was fun, not great, but was a unique spin on them...con men/ghost busters. I didn't hate it and Damon and Ledger did quite well with their characters.

Only indie comics I read were Watchmen in college (after everyone told me I had to) and Elfquest

Elfquest? LOL.

Ya, Spud found the Pini's werk to be a little too overly cute fer me tastes.

Ever read Miller's "Batman: the Dark Night Returns"?

Best fight between Batman and Superman EVAR!

Alan Moore's V for Vendetta and Watchmen were must reads but Spud also reccomends MiracleMan (which was actually "MarvelMan" in the UK but was changed to the the other due to Americna copyright law).

His "From Hell" was made into a movie that wasn't particularily memorable.

Be Well.

I didn't hate it and Damon and Ledger did quite well with their characters.

Their considerable talents were wasted on the thin material.

Marginally interesting in spots but largely unwatchable.

Be Well.

Ever read Miller's "Batman: the Dark Night Returns"?

Who hasn't, but Arkham Asylam is my favorite Batman GN.

The only Moore I read was Watchmen. He annoys me, but I enjoy the movies he so hates.

Elfquest was great for me because I was in 8th grade and it was my first "adult" comic.

kanrei

they will still have him being a holocaust survivor.

and they have someone else playing the young magneto.

I mean the getting old thing, as in the holocaust was a really long time ago, has an easy fix, just have one of the characters drop a line about how mutants tend to have longer life spans or some junk.

Yeah, if fans accept the fact that the guy has the power to manipulate metal, then I think you can find a way to make him age gracefully.

I am sure this movie will be great to any non-diehard fan out there, which is a shame because it is the fans that made Wolverine worthy of having a movie.

Actually, its the box office millions that had to do with it. If it only appealed to the comic book fans, there wouldn't have been an X2.

I never read the comics myself, couldn't tolerate having to wait for the next issue and all, too soap opera for my tastes, but I've seen all these movies and think they're good (well, not that last xmen). Its more important for these movies to stand on their own, so that the uninitiated can enjoy them too, than to be consistent with comic history. Definitely think of them as an alternate story-arc, and no, not one that already exists, and you'll be okay. You might not be able to do that though if you are too emotionally invested in the original material.

You might not be able to do that though if you are too emotionally invested in the original material.

In this case, I am and admit it. I have been a HUGE Wolverine fan since my childhood. I still have and wear a tee shirt my high school girlfriend bought me of him with the Punisher's unform shredded on his claws.

If it only appealed to the comic book fans, there wouldn't have been an X2.

I agree, but, if it wasn't for the fan's 30+ years of supporting the comic, there wouldn't have been an X-men comic to base the movie on, nor enough demand for it to leap from comic to movie. The first two X-men movies and the 3 Spiderman movies actually did a great job of being their own stories with enough "fan material" to keep us fanboys happy. X3 did not and it seems from all I have read and seen that this one is not either.

PS- the shirt was bought for me in 1988

Yeah, and your adamanitum nipples are showing through, you freak.

I had those removed after Sept 11. Made air travel too time consuming and the searches started to really hurt.

Not close enough. *sigh* But I can't wait!

I'd like to see some Warren Ellis adapted for the screen.

Didn't they make a Vampirella movie aready, or is that Warren Harris I am thinking of?

Oh, I just looked him up, they did make an Ellis movie- Constitine was based on Hellblazer.

Star Trek and Iron Man II are out real soon

What's tin the wings? Thor and The Avengers, I think.

Old Goatman: oriscus.com

Oh, I just looked him up, they did make an Ellis movie- Constantine was based on Hellblazer.

Don't even mention that abortion of a flick to Spud.

As a fan of Moore 'Swamp Thing' the John Constantine character has a crossover a coupla time and that's how Spud got to know him. Spud still owns the first 20 or so Hellblazers and they are some wicked cool stuff.

Allowing Keanu Reeves to play the title role was just the first of the many sins that film displayed.

Total waste of film stock with the possible exception of Tilda Swinton.

"Strewth" btw was Constantine's trademark expletive although he meant the word in a different sense than Spud that's where that particular affectation originated in, case anyone was curious about that.

What's in the wings? Thor and The Avengers, I think.

At the end of Iron Man, if you sat through the credits, you got to see Sammy L Jackson as Nick Fury trying to recruit RD Jr as Tony Stark aka Iron Man into the Avengers.

That shit will rawk.

Thor? Meh. He was kinda cool back in the day but Spud aint sure if there is still enuff residual appeal and interest left over to make that one into a box office winner.

Spud still thinks a Doctor Strange movie could sell if made well.

Be Well.

It seems Kenneth Branagh is directing Thor, so it may have possibilities.

Too bad they ruined Daredevil so badly.

Doctor Strange movie

And Mandrake the Magician, too.

Did someone mention Thor?

www.youtube.com

His name is Logan!

Every time they called him Jimmy, I yelled "Logan!" at the TV......

I, for one, would welcome an Inhumans movie.
