A massive natural-gas discovery here in northern Louisiana heralds a big shift in the nation's energy landscape. After an era of declining production, the U.S. is now swimming in natural gas. Even conservative estimates suggest the Louisiana discovery -- known as the Haynesville Shale, for the dense rock formation that contains the gas -- could hold some 200 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. That's the equivalent of 33 billion barrels of oil, or 18 years' worth of current U.S. oil production. Some industry executives think the field could be several times that size.

Cool I think I will go home, put the furnace on 90 and open all the windows.

Must have been Britney Spears queefs got collected up and turned into Natural Gas. THANKS BRITNEY.

Larry

That's a lot of dinosaur farts.

And that's just in 101's lower bowel.
Fart, baby, fart!

I didn't read the article, but just based on the blurb here this appears to be pretty good news.

Could we maybe learn our lesson this time around and actually have a plan in place for what happens in another 18 years when this natural gas starts diminishing?

LE PEW!

Yeah....You think your heating bill is going down next winter?

Since Feinstien is against solar power good thing they found this.

Why does chickenchoker have such a hardon for Feinstien?
What is your obsession with her all about chickenslapper?

Convert more vehicles to natural gas and save the oil for use as oil. Lubricating industry needs to be a priority as without industry there isn't much else.

Hey Murphy,

Now we will see if the price of natural gas goes down for us across the country.

LOL!

They should be paying us to burn the shit now.

The oil equivancy is a distraction.

DOE says the U.S. consumed 23 million cubic feet last year. That makes this good for thousands of years, at current production.

Or the U.S. could become a major exporter of gas, instead of a net importer. And we could also shut down some old coal fired power plants and build more clean, gas-fired plants.

tonto.eia.doe.gov

"Or the U.S. could become a major exporter of gas, instead of a net importer."

Probably that is what will happen so that they don't ever have to lower the prices we pay. And we'll happily let them do it cuz most of us are dumb.

Hopefully this pans out. Could change your entire geo-political approach.

"The oil equivancy is a distraction.

Well if we are swimming in natural gas then it make sense that maybe we'll start building cars that run on it.

Sully,

Cars already run on LNG with very little modifications. They run cleaner and cheaper.

You can get a "station" installed in your garage that will refill your car in a few hours.

If you cannot refill while on a trip, just flip a switch to go back to gasonline.

I already do.

No way. We burn through something like 60 million cubic feet a day. This is about 17 years' worth of current usage--something like that. Still a biggie.

Haynesville is already fairly developed in other parts of the country; this is a gigantic find though in LA.

My friends in Switzerland all drive natural gas powered cars and filling stations are well distributed. I think Detroit needs to bypass the oil industry and start producing N-Gas cars. To hell with OPEC and The oil companies!!!

" I think Detroit needs to bypass the oil industry "

Agreed. Never gonna happen.

Could we maybe learn our lesson this time around and actually have a plan in place for what happens in another 18 years when this natural gas starts diminishing?

We won't use the gas now. We will save it for the next century.
We can't drill any more holes in the USA.

I'm hopefully building a house next year. Going with geothermal instead of gas.

Who cares?

The Liberals won't let us use it anyway.

They will find a way to make N. Louisiana a National Park and forever make the natural gas deposit inaccessible for the nation's energy needs.

Just watch.

They will figure out some way to screw this up.

The U.S. government is hopelessly corrupt and inept.

The Liberals won't let us use it anyway.

So many idiots so little time.... Permits for natural gas drilling are generally significantly easier to get than oil. You should need a permit to be that stupid.

Vernon's number: 23 million cu ft last year.

Fact: "Natural gas - consumption: 652.9 billion cu m (2007 est.)"

Vernon: Goddamned Calculator!! Again you fuck me with all your little buttons and funny symbols! I will never hear the end of this.

I see now what you're talking about now. The DOE nat gas website publishes their numbers in millions.

That's not necessarily true. All depends on where.

Cleaner, cheaper, but the "mpg" is not as good, nor is the power curve.

Still...

What type of vehicle do you have? In my neck of the woods, some ranch types run their pick'em-up trucks on propane: the tank is mounted in the bed, so it's an easier conversion and loss of cargo room is not really a problem. But with a car, the only place to install the propane tank is in the trunk (or the back seat), or in my case, I drive a small wagon, so it would have to be in the back. Either way, lots of cargo space is lost.

Places to refuel shouldn't be that difficult. Any place that RVs go, there will be propane.

There be a a typo in the above:

23 trillion cubic feet consumed in 2008.

www.eia.doe.gov

Zot,

Mercedes. I find my cost to drive to be lower than gasoline even if the MPG is a little less due to NG being cheaper.

I can go longer between oil changes.

The "tank" is in the trunk and I can hook up a unit in my garage to refill the car.

Since 90% of my travel is local this is extremely convenient.

If you were like me, everything in my house runs on natural gas; water heater, dish washer, dryer, now if they can just get the Air conditioner to run on Natural gas that would rule. Unfortunately living in Phoenix, My A/C runs ALOT. But If we could convert to Natural Gas, what a boom for every industry in America. But we will have to "drill" for it and Nancy Pelosi will not have it, she is an Idiot

THEY ALREADY DO

"...now if they can just get the Air conditioner to run on Natural gas that would rule."

There have been natural gas air conditioners around for a long time. The problem was that the existing technology required the condensing units to be very large, and not so practical in widespread application. Might be worth investing in some newer technology there.

I lived in a rent house that had a natural gas AC. It went on the fritz once and I was talking about it to the AC guy since the technology fascinated me. He told me that the refrigerant is ammonia and that it has to be heated. Basic AC is easy to understand, but I'm still not clear how the natural gas/ammonia thing works.

BTW, he told me they were no more effecient than regular AC except in very, very hot climates. He questioned if even Dallas in the summertime was hot enough to justify them.

"But we will have to "drill" for it and Nancy Pelosi will not have it, she is an Idiot"

And when you have nothing to say...just make shit up....

"BAAAAHHHHH WAAAHHHHHHHHH Does this natural gas discovery mean we can't push our high priced subsidized alternative energy program. Waaahhhhhh!!!!"

Barry and the libs

Ammonia-based air conditioners are NASTY! But the principle is the same - natural gas or ammonia are the "refrigerant" and their cooling ability as to do with their ability to transfer heat, and at what temperature they evaporate and condense under pressure.

www.lehmans.com

THEY ARE LP but same principle.

Does this mean we can revert to our inherent laziness and let our grandchildren deal with the problem when fossil fuels run out?

-FuckWitThom and the Republicans

Hey, that sounds like a good name for a band!

Propane and propane accessories.

But the principle is the same

I just don't get where the burning of natural gas (producing heat) is necessary on an ammonia based systme.

T Boone Pickens plan sounds like it was made just for this.
The biggest piece of his plan (as far as cars & trucks) was switching all transport trucks over to natural gas as this would greatly reduce the foreign oil needed.

I stand corrected, Now how do we get natural gas A/C in the mainstream? and again, Will Nancy Pelosi let us drill for it, She is the president you know!!

How Natural Gas Air Conditioning Works

If this was announced a year ago the republicans would have invaded Lousiana

#43 | Posted by goatman

You may be confused. An ammonia system and a NG system are different. Gas isn't burned in an air conditioner, it serves as the conduit for heat removal, just like R-22 or R-12 freon.

~Common Sense.

Bascially, just came here to say this and found that CS had already made the point.

Achieving energy self sufficiency is preferable to propping up corrupt wahabbist royalty who support terrorism.

Be Well.

Gas isn't burned in an air conditioner, it serves as the conduit for heat removal, just like R-22 or R-12 freon.

Mine was a different system then. This was back in '81, so I don't remember the details the AC guy told me. I do remember a pilot light had to be relit all the time or it didn't work. I also remember him telling me that the ammonia was heated. It was confusing. I'll have to see if I can find it on the internet. I'm intrigued now.

i found it. The gas is burned to heat water to boil the ammonia out. It is not used as the refrigerant agent as freon is.

It makes sense now. I had forgotten that water was an essential part of the system.

In case you are interested in how it works:

www.gasairconditioning.org

Is it in the Democrats "No Drilling Zone"?

Funny how it's Californian's and Pelosi that won't allow drilling offshore in CA, so how does she impact onshore in LA? Since drilling is already under way all these moronic comments seem, well, moronic.

LM

Here's another idea GOATMAN:

Build a huge natural gas firing steam turbine electric plant and run wires to your electric freon based air conditioner. COOL!

BTW it looks like this swine flu scare was a false alarm so we may not get our cheap Mexican Riviera vacation. NOT COOL!

You can get a "station" installed in your garage that will refill your car in a few hours.

Hours? How about mimutes?

"200 Trillion Cubic Feet of Natural Gas Found"

Dammit! The government has spies in my bed!

Going with geothermal instead of gas.

You'll still need a back-up heater in the system. Go with gas.

LMAO-Big FF for you.

Yeeay! This is seriously some great news. Fuck you, Middle-East dictators!

HOLT IT RIGHT THERE TEX!

We have no right to exploit all those natural gas deposits and should continue buying it from the Russians so they car re-equip their military. Same goes for oil the Arabs using the revenue to fund Al Qaeda.

The gas deposits have been there for millions of years. Thank god we have Nancy Pelosi running congress. She will put a stop to this exploitation of shale rock!

You're truly

President, SAVE THE SHALE FOUNDATION

Now there's a glut, which has driven prices down to a six-year low and prompted producers to temporarily cut back drilling and search for new demand.

So the gas companies are the ones opposed to drilling, not the Dems...
Wonder which party the producers donate most to?

why would a producer give to a republican right now?

You know what's strange? If this is true, it's the biggest/greatest news our Country has had in a long time.

Yet I am having a very hard time finding this on MSM.

You'd think Americans would be dancing in the streets. Yet nothing.

It's a fossil fuel, and NOT part of the left's new cap and trade horsehit policy.

if its not recirculating its a huge waster of clean drinking water.

#64, I HOPE this find doesn't stop or slow down alternative energy, but it does buy us time.

Let's just hope we're not so stupid as to wait 17 years and then say "OOOps, maybe we should do something."

Just as a thought, but if cars can be easily converted, and can switch back to gasoline with a simple switch, why not use a small propane tank in the trunk (not loose too much space) and then switch back if you drive more than a hundred miles or something.

I know, call me crazy.

Lots of good comments from all sides on this thread! Let's hope the new natural gas discoveries help change our consumption of foreign oil and gas. That would be a win for everyone in the US.
