A two-year-old child in Texas has become the first fatality from swine flu in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control. The child is the first person to die of swine flu outside of Mexico where the virus has caused more than 159 deaths and roughly 2,500 illnesses.

My thoughts go out to the kid's parents. What a horrible thing to be first in.

Bizarre though that this patient zero was the only one in his village that got it.

"Officials say the first confirmed death in the U.S. from swine flu was a 23-month-old Mexican child who died in Houston.

Kathy Barton, a spokeswoman for the Houston Health and Human Services Department, said Wednesday that the child had traveled with family from Mexico to Brownsville in south Texas. She says the child became ill in Brownsville and was taken to a Houston hospital and died Monday night. "

So apparently it was a Mexican child that just happened to be in the States.

GET YOUR MASKS!!

reuse the old SARS MASKS!

I'd say where the kid got the disease is more important than where he died. I could get swine flu in Mexico and fly to the North Pole and die there - it wouldn't mean it was going around there unless I infected people with it before I died.

"... a Mexican child that just happened to be in the States."

The question to ask is what is the incubation time before one begins to exhibit symptoms.

Something stinks about the time-line of this story.

It was posed a couple of days ago on a radio show that many of those in Mexico, specifically Mexico City, who could not get in to see a medico, as is the case for countless thousands because what medical system there is in Mexico is very highly overloaded, they will come across the border to seek attention. I suspect that this child is one of those, or rather the child's family.

as some have said

make sure we all know that this child..bless thier heart...was in brownsville and transported to houston.

Astro,

This child was not patient zero. The believed patient zero is alive and well in Mexico. He dispalyed symptoms in early March and recovered and is the first recorded Mexican with the virus before outbreak occurred.

Also before jumping to conclusions, another article puts the toddler with it's family, who live in Brownsville area, as visiting relatives in Mexico. Upon travelling back to the states the child became ill while in Brownsville and was flown to Houston for aid. Not necessarily a case of illegal immigration as I believe you were implying. Let's focus more on finding out what is the cause and cure and not who travelled where. I do have vested interest in this as my roomate is a transporter at the hospital teh child was flown to.

2 to 7 days, same as the plain old flu.

And you are infectious 1 day prior to showing symptoms and up to five days afterwards.

According to the CDC.

Someone else wrote on another thread the best piece of advice -- get a pneumonia shot.
Any doctor's office will have in in stock. It's good for at least 5 years and most of the younger people (under 40) who were swine flu fatalities died due to swine flu-caused pneumonia and/or other respiratory problems.

The idiot Janet Neapolitano (an open borders globalist who wouldn't guard our borders if zombies infected with small pox were pouring into the U.S.) is a joke. She will never allow anyone to be questioned who comes over our border -- she's all talk. Her dismal record as Governor of Arizona speaks for itself.

We now have a couple cases of this swine flu here in Los Angeles.

There was a Mexican woman interviewed on tv last night who was wearing a respiratory mask and had one on each of her two children. She had crossed over at a border crossing coming over from Mexico -- legally -- to conduct some business here in the U.S. She was asked by a U.S. reporter if anyone had stopped her and questioned whether or not she had the flu or flu symptoms (a logical question due to she and her kids wearing the face masks and coming here from Mexico -- ground zero for this swine flu outbreak). She said "No" -- not a single border guard, nor any health personnel at the border, questioned her about having the flu or flu symptoms or why she was wearing a face mask.

Janet Neopolitan will not protect our borders -- no way, no how -- she's an open borders advocate and refuses to do her job to protect this country and will not question ANYONE -- sick or not -- if they want to come into this country. From now on just figure that any disease is welcomed into this country without inspection of anyone bringing it across. Neopolitano is too pc to dare "offend" anyone crossing over our borders -- even if it meant being able to stop the spread of a contagious disease inside this country. Obama's appointment and decision to put her in charge of our security was a disaster.

Can we re-use the hundreds of billions of dollars that was going to be spent for vaccines that had a 60 day shelf life that Bush wouldn't let congress spend?

Don't forget your duct tape and plastic sheets.

CalifChris: Cmon, Janet is too busy making sure we are protected from the internal threat of our troops coming back from the middle east, hooking up with conservatives and performing acts of terrorism within our borders. A far greater threat to this nation than undocumented aliens and mexican drug gangs dont you think?!?!?

ff boojiboy!

Swine flu is more mild than the seasonal flu. Obama's staff taking a joy ride over Lower Manhattan on Scare Force One is a more interesting and relevent story.

Serious and truthful answer? NO. Authorities have already said that Tamiflu shots will not work with this particular strain.

Like I wrote above, and someone else wrote a couple of days earlier, if you're serious about protecting yourself and your family members get a pneumonia shot. Any doctor or clinic can give you one and it's about $40. Cheaper than dying.

Pneumonia shots normally were given to people over 65 (or those with compromised immune systems) but with this particular swine flu strain killing so many younger people due to pneumonia/respiratory complications it's been recommended for everyone.

Pneumonia shots

Actually Chris... she will do what THE PUPPET instructs her to do... keeping the borders open ... comes from the top!

THE PUPPET will do his masters bidding.

Good point!

Funny how this appeared when Obama visited Mexico. Is this a man made virus? Why call it swine flu if it was made in a lab by some terrorist group???????

The media would NEVER tell the truth if this was man made.

Are you kidding? The media would be on it like stink on shit. It's the government, who is trying to make nice-nice across the globe that would try to hush it up.

Let's call it what it is, Mexican Flu

That would not be PC enough for the libs that plan to make the illegal aliens their voting base of the future.

Okay. How about the cochina flu?!?!?!?

Isn't this a eurasian strain?

LM

How about the cochina flu?!?!?!?

I think he means "gripe de la concha". It is the leading cause of spontaneous ball rupture and necrotizing cock disintegration in Mexico and the Southwestern US.

It's much worse than swine flu, ebola virus and SARS put in a blender, drawn up, and injected into your carotid artery.

califchris,

Just about every expert I've heard or read say that it is impossible, and therefore a waste of time, resources, and money to try to close a 2,000 mile long border that runs through deserts, mountains, and at least two major rivers.

There are 250 million LEGAL crossings of the border a year and about 500,000 ILLEGAL crossings. Countless billions of dollars in revenue depend on open borders, particularly with so many so-called American companies moving their manufacturing plants and agricultural operations south of the border.

In fact, there is some evidence that this episode of swine flu traces back to an American pig farm located in Mexico that has been the subject of countless complaints by locals for environmental violations.

So, if we were somehow to miraculously stop illegal immigration across the border, we will only stop two-tenths of one percent of the people crossing the border. The other 99.8% are legal crossings.

And, if we were somehow to miraculously close the entire border, many billions of dollars will be lost and many thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands of both Americans and Mexicans will endure financial catastrophes and possibly ruin.

Please try to think through the deeper consequences of the off-the-wall ravings that Fox News and other xenophobic racists and nativists are heaping upon us to play on our fears and hatreds.
