Bob Shrum: The Republicans finally think they've found an issue: They're in favor of torture. Republican House Leader John Boehner channeled the party's will when he spoke up for the torturers' cause at a White House meeting with President Obama. But his voice was drowned out (metaphorically) by someone who had previously left the White House for an undisclosed location in suburban Virginia. Dick Cheney, the avatar of the nonexistent threat of weapons of mass destruction, hastened onto the public stage to blast the President for endangering the national security. Obama's crime? Releasing memos depicting waterboarding and other techniques borrowed from enemies like the Communist Chinese.

Cheney For President
By Ross Douthat (NYT)
www.nytimes.com
Excerpt:

At the very least, a Cheney-Obama contest would have clarified conservatism's present political predicament. In the wake of two straight drubbings at the polls, much of the American right has comforted itself with the idea that conservatives lost the country primarily because the Bush-era Republican Party spent too much money on social programs. And John McCain's defeat has been taken as the vindication of this premise.

We tried running the maverick reformer, the argument goes, and look what it got us. What Americans want is real conservatism, not some crypto-liberal imitation.

"Real conservatism," in this narrative, means a particular strain of right-wingery: a conservatism of supply-side economics and stress positions, uninterested in social policy and dismissive of libertarian qualms about the national-security state. And Dick Cheney happens to be its diamond-hard distillation. The former vice-president kept his distance from the Bush administration's attempts at domestic reform, and he had little time for the idealistic, religiously infused side of his boss's policy agenda. He was for tax cuts at home and pre-emptive warfare overseas; anything else he seemed to disdain as sentimentalism.

This is precisely the sort of conservatism that's ascendant in today's much-reduced Republican Party, from the talk radio dials to the party's grassroots. And a Cheney-for-President campaign would have been an instructive test of its political viability.

Cheney-Limbauh 2012: Because Fat is Where it's At

These torture stories are such a waste of time. The memos showing success will never be released and the commision won't be put together because it will bust Pelosi. It will soon go away to make room for the 100 days of the great one. What has he done anyway?

Hey, when are the hearings going to start, seriously, lets get all the info in the documents out in the open.

what moveon wants they eventually get!!!!

Dunno.

What did Cheney ever do besides avoid a draft and then proceed to send thousands of Honorable young Men and Women to their deaths in an unnecessary war?

I don't know whom I find scarier, Dick Cheney or Bob Schrum. They both have presided over more than one
debacle. Schrum and that other political guru Donna Brazile should be paid residuals by the GOP for the many R's they have helped elect.

Thanks Jerry, who pulled the string on your back so you could spew out the two year old lib talking point?

Give him a break. Cheney was only protecting the US just as much as Hitler was protecting Germany.

One should not hold it against him that he was unable or unwilling to grow the obligatory Charlie Chaplin mustache.

Fortunately when the tinsmith made Cheney, he did remember to give him a heart, albeit a badly functioning one made of steel.

Eventually it'll bust a rivet and konk out.

Decompostion will set in and angry black ideological flowers will spring from his mortal remains for our renowned botanists to categorize and classify as much too dangerous for future human consumption.

that "lib" talking point will be good for many decades if not centuries my fishy friend!

And so now...The Republicans will be known as the party of torture... and Cheney will be remembered as the Torture VP... justice can be slow but eventually the truth will out.

Said Bush this summer, "I'll be dead when they finally figure it out."

Welcome to history Bushco.

Look it up for yourself ace, if you know how!! It is physical harm.

Torture was done, not to protect America, but to force a false confession from somebody...anybody who might tie Sadam to 9/11.

Torture was used to gain political spin to cover W's excellent adventure.

Can you cite a single documented case wherein Bush era "enhanced interrogation"---by the way, you're a little behind the curve on the Orwellian newspeak, since the preferred terminology appears to be "controlled acute episode"---saved American lives?

"enhanced interrogations"

Newspeak lives.

Has anyone mentioned that the "waterboarded 183 times" cry from the limp-wrists is nothing but typical hysterical leftwing screaching based off of incorrect information?

Re Newspeak, a snip from 5/15/07 on GOP candidates' debate:

"Did anyone get the sense that Ron Paul was the only candidate in the Republican Debate tonight that has read the book 1984? He took Brit Hume's covert phrase "enhanced interrogation techniques" and said "it sounds like newspeak" and is just another word for torture....No one on the stage seemed to get the reference, nor anyone in the red state crowd, but it was heartening to hear the reference amidst an otherwise drowning Republican party."
firstmovers.blogspot.com

"the waterboarded 183 times cry from the limp-wrists is nothing but typical hysterical leftwing screaching based off of incorrect information"

"The CIA used the waterboard 'at least 83 times during August 2002' in the interrogation of Zubaydah, IG Report at 90, and 183 times during March 2003 in the interrogation of KSM, see id. at 91."
MEMORANDUM FOR JOHN A. RIZZO
SENIOR DEPUTY COUNCIL, CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY
(From DOJ Office of Legal Counsel - May 30, 2005)
s3.amazonaws.com

Dig deeper. Water was poured 83 and 183 times. There were not 83, and 183 water-boarding sessions as you fruitcakes have either stated or implied.

I'm assumng you're relying on this, from an anonymous source (a "U.S. official with knowledge of the interrogation program"): "The water was poured 183 times -- there were 183 pours," the official explained, adding that "each pour was a matter of seconds" (www.foxnews.com). There's no support for that interpretation I've been able to find, other than the Fox News story quoted above. No memos, no public statements, nothing. If you're able to dig deeper and come up with something that actual holds water (other than a waterboarding victim), please do so.

The American Red Cross.

Chair,

Check your email.

It's the "International Committee of the Red Cross, Regional Committee for United States and Canada" (www.nybooks.com). It would be interesting to see whether the information the DOJ memo writer(s) had in hand comports with that of the ICRC; treatment the ICRC labeled as "torture."

And thats' just one reason more information is needed.

Can you show me a document where bodily harm (torture) has been used? Please look up the definition of torture for your own sake so you don't look so stupid when you throw the term around.

Most Americans believe enhanced interrogations are acceptable to save lives.

Say what? Maybe those Americans like Cheney who run around the house and yard all day wearing nothing but their BVD's and a 44 magnum strapped to their waist, but thank God there is not too many of those freaks outside of Texas and Langley, VA.

Give him a break. Cheney was only protecting the US just as much as Hitler was protecting Germany.

BRAVO !!! I only wish I had your ability and talent for expressing the sad truth !!

How about thoes people in NY Sunday? What were they running from? It just was a low flying jet!!! I guess they don't feel all that safe with BHO running the show.

Can you show me a document where bodily harm (torture) has been used? Please look up the definition of torture for your own sake so you don't look so stupid when you throw the term around.

Well, let's flip your statement. Here's a definition of "torture" for you:

"any act by which severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, is intentionally inflicted on a person for such purposes as obtaining from him, or a third person, information or a confession, punishing him for an act he or a third person has committed or is suspected of having committed, or intimidating or coercing him or a third person, or for any reason based on discrimination of any kind, when such pain or suffering is inflicted by or at the instigation of or with the consent or acquiescence of a public official or other person acting in an official capacity. It does not include pain or suffering arising only from, inherent in, or incidental to, lawful sanctions."
Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman
or Degrading Treatment or Punishment

www.unhchr.ch

That one was signed onto by the government of the United States.

And while you're educating yourself---so you don't sound so ignorant---check out the "ICRC Report on the Treatment of Fourteen 'High Value" Detainees in CIA Custody" (www.nybooks.com), wherein said treatement is repeatedly described as "torture."

Do you have to work at being so ill-informed or does it just come naturally?

doc, do you have access to a dicitonary? Use it for something besides a door stop.

What is 'severe physical suffering'? To me it is reading danni's or doc's posts here.

Stop the torture danni and doc!!!!!

Okay, dumbo, here's a dictionary definition:

torture (trchr) KEY

NOUN:

Infliction of severe physical pain as a means of punishment or coercion.
An instrument or a method for inflicting such pain.
Excruciating physical or mental pain; agony: the torture of waiting in suspense.
Something causing severe pain or anguish.

What is it you don't grasp? What do we have here, a comprehension gap brought on by too much reading, faulty processing, and an inability to engage in critical thinking?

Oh, right, I forgot, Sniper. You're the guy who posts someone else's writing trying to pass it off as your own and then runs and hides when he gets caught. LOL.

The Snipe and the Pretend Paratrooper: embarrass me about my testosterone. What this pair (of lovers?) tries to peddle as "manhood" is - well - just shameful. herm

How about thoes people in NY Sunday? What were they running from? It just was a low flying jet!!! I guess they don't feel all that safe with BHO running the show.

I never knew there were so many republicans in New York.

I lost a day this week. It was Monday. The ones running were BHO supporters. They thought it was happening again. Go figure.

So doc, what part of that definition fits water boarding? What was the physical harm, or is it what I said in post #46?

The name of Dick Cheney will long stand in the hall of those who have brought shame on our country. Claim what you will, the founders of the US did not allow torture and did not write it into the "Piece of paper". That same old paper that some have come to respect for the incite and grand thought that went into it. People like Cheney shame the very foundation of what we are. I am sick of hear. "If someone was holding your......". We are not a nation of torturers though sadly some of us are just that. We can and will remain a strong and guarded nation without this archaic practice.

Look it up for yourself ace, if you know how!! It is physical harm.

Physical and or psychological harm. You have left out half of the equation. Just forgot it right?

Doc, do you have access to a dicitonary? I'm having trouble spelling this one word. I know it starts with D-I-C-, but then I get stuck.
