Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

The Food and Drug Administration is recommending consumers not eat raw alfalfa sprouts until further notice because the popular crunchy greens have been linked to a salmonella saintpaul outbreak in six states. Officials believe infected seeds, sold nationwide, are the source of the outbreak. The warning does not include bean and other types of sprouts. There have been 31 cases of salmonella saintpaul in Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Utah, and West Virginia linked to alfalfa sprouts since mid-March, FDA says. No deaths have been reported. The current outbreak appears to be an extension of an outbreak that sickened more than 100 in February and March in Nebraska, South Dakota, Iowa, Kansas, and Minnesota, officials say.

I'm more afraid of what Buckwheat in the Whitehouse will do.

Actually it is Mickey, not Alfalfa you should be afraid of. He's the one who was accused of murderng his wife.

That's a particularly racist comment.

Cookie is a particularly racist whitefish.

Save us FDA! How about a pharmaceutical substitute for raw alfalfa that's just as "healthy"?

Too bad there isn't a raw alfalfa lobby to get the FDA to help sweep this under the rug.

Fuck that. I like alfalfa sprouts. I'm eating a sandwich with feta, onions, peppers, lettuce, tomatoes, onions and ton of sprouts right now. They're nutritious and delicious. Even if there were 30 cases in almost 2 months -- that's still less than how many people get sick from tainted meat over that some period.

Sprouts are good. The FDA needs to start telling us more about factory farmed chicken, pork and beef.

Vegetarianism has its merits - Americans eat too much meat, and humans evolved to eat a lot of veggies (but meat also!). I try to make sure to eat meat every couple of days or after a hard run just to get the protein and because nothing beats sinking your teeth into animal flesh that has been marinated, spiced, and seared to perfection on a grill.

If you've got ethical qualms about the treatment of animals that are to be slaughtered, that's fine, but in my book not a good reason not to eat meat. I'm more concerned about health issues.

Chicken is fine - very nutritious and damn tasty. It just happens to be a breeding ground for influenza viruses. Pork is only good if barbecued, IMHO. If you cook the hell out of it, there is no risk of foodborne illness, but pigs are disgusting animals - 2 out of 3 Abrahamic religions agree. And if for some reason you don't cook your pig thoroughly, you can get brain parasites. Uncooked chicken just makes you shit your brains out. Eat kosher hot dogs and good cuts of meat, and you're probably okay. No brain matter in that - if you believe that Hebrew National really does answer to an authority higher than its shareholders. Beef is just not very healthy, though, especially if you eat a lot of it.

Ground beef, well, you never know what goes in the front end of the meat grinder. I prefer to stay away from that, unless it's from a local butcher who I know isn't going to give me hamburger patties with extra prion (or ex-wife) on the side.

anybody remember this terror attack of alfalfa sprouts?

salmonella grows within the sprout itself otherwise you could take precautions like washing your vegies with a spray of water and hydrogen peroxide.

I heard this from Asian friends a number of years ago. Very well known problem.

O-tay!

"I'm more afraid of what Buckwheat in the Whitehouse will do."

Congratulations, Cookfish.

You've just won the Neanderthal Cousin-Humping Fucktard of the Year Award.

And 2nd place was miles behind you.

Wot's this 'new' fear nonsense?

Spud has always been properly horrified by Alfalfa!

...and Brussel sprouts, carrots, yams, peas etc etc.

Seriously if you can't BBQ it or deep fry it Spud don't want to know about it.

Broccoli is okay but only cos Dumbya's Daddy hated it.

Be Well.

You sound like my best friend, Eric. He asks, "How do you know if food is bad? It's green"

"I would like a fish license for my pet fish Eric, Eric the fish."

"You're a loony."

"I am not a loony. I have a license for my pet dog Eric and my pet cat Eric."

"That's not a cat license, that's a dog license with the word 'dog' crossed out and the word 'cat' written in in crayon"

He asks, "How do you know if food is bad? It's green"

Spud always asks "How do you know when sour cream goes bad? Does it turn sweet?"

Be Well.
