Um, hate to burst your bubble Jeffy, but the spanish flu is an A/H1N1 virus, and it's been circulating in human populations off and on since 1918. The reason it doesn't kill us anymore, despite having accumulated only minor changes in the intervening time, is that our immune systems are no longer naive to it. The virus has also adapted to us as hosts, so it does not cause as severe of disease. Some of the H1N1 strains circulated in pigs instead of humans, and adapted to that host. They have recently evolved the ability to infect and pass directly between humans.

"Resurrecting" the 1918 flu was a milestone for virology. Sequencing its genome is essential to know how influenza A evolves. Just because the government has a slew of A/H1N1 viruses on ice doesn't mean that they're behind every person infected with one. These things have been honed by evolution into pathogens remarkably efficient at transmitting between hosts. Give mother nature her due. I believe the last flu season was dominated by human-adapted H1N1 viruses - mother nature's own work. You see a consipracy in everything. Even in the spiders that crawl out of your walls when you haven't taken your antipsychotics in a couple of days.
