A little known fact about earthquakes is that one of, if not the largest earthquakes known to occured in the western hemisphere occurred in this area. It rivaled the great Alaskan quake. California has the name but the worst hit areas for major hits is Alaska and the mid-west. Google this one and you will find volumes. We here in California have many though not as many as Alaska's island chain, the mid-west has it's share of rollers and just may be due for that long awaited (in California) "Big One".
