Today is the 95th anniversary of the Ludlow Massacre where units of the Colorado National Guard, using machine guns, fired into the tent city set up by striking mine workers for themselves and their families (after the mining companies had thrown them out of their company owned houses) outside Ludlow, CO. 20 people were killed, including 11 young children (a total of 75 people were killed, the vast majority being strikers or their family members, before the strike was over). The National Guard had been called in after the owners of the coal mines in the area, including one owned by the Rockefeller family, demanded that something be done to clear the camps which were located along the routes into and out of the mines.
