Single-celled organisms that can convert electricity into methane could help solve one of the biggest problems with renewable energy -- its unreliability compared to the steady output of polluting fossil-fuel power stations.

Mouthbreather translation: Methane is natural gas.

If they can really get 80% efficiency, this is pretty amazing.

But since it is carbon neutral, the global warming deniers will probably want it killed.

Axe, it's really quite an interesting find! It can be used for carbon sequestering, then the resulting gas used for generating electricity for peaks or when the wind or sun isn't generating enough. How neat is that? Solves a lot of problems, is very green, and it creates a new industry, jobs and something we can export (technology).

I just don't get how some people wish to remain stuck to dying industries. Cut the cords. Create a future you would want to live in.

Alternative energy sources - yes!

:-)

You beat me to a wise-crack - I logged on to say that such organisms have existed for a LONG time: couch potatoes.

........I have to cut out the article for next time my wife is nagging me for TV/beer/farting around......."see honey..I'm greening the planet"..

It's about time those organisms started pulling their weight. let's tax 'em.

Ah, let me tell you what happened. on friday, mrs lipz was calling the childs teacher and had to leave a message. Well, i didn't know she was on the phone, i mean what's she hanging around in my office anyway? well, I emmitted a very, imho, musical and loud fart. It was pretty impressive. I'm sure the teacher could hear it on the phone message. She is still mad at me about that.

I told her, I'll bet the teacher's husband farted too, and she said, 'SHE'S SMART, SHE'S NOT MARRIED'.

LIPPY-Tell her that you thank God that your girl friend isn't such a pain about it. This will cure everything.

"Depends" modified with a methane capture unit for humans and cows are already being developed.

***ALERT*** the correct download for Desktop Earth 2.11. Sorry for the old link.

Other than a crude headline.. its an interesting article..

Science is terrific.. but the religion of human induced global warming could be left out of it.

Electricity causes passed gas (I hate to use the other word) methane? Well, since we are in that topic, and since wombat droppings are being used to make organic poo paper, and when this stuff comes out of the wombats I read that it comes out in cubes, it is hard to imagine that the poor little things do not also produce methane gas in great amounts. Another source of methane gas that will benefit the earth. Al Gore should look into it, big time. By the way, this explains why the wombats scream like Talisman Devils, causing British explorers to believe that the place was inhabited by demons. Chalk up another mystery solved by evolution.

I fart roses.

"I fart roses."

Those thorns must hurt.
