Florida Power & Light also hopes that a planned solar-powered city will generate so much power that it will be able to serve the grid with additional electricity. "Babcock Ranch will be a living laboratory for companies, workers and families ready to reap the rewards of innovation," said developer Kitson & Partners.

This is a great project. At least it won't block the nice view of the bay in Massachusetts.

But we need to drill for more oil! Who knows when the sun will run out??

I think this has been done already out west. It was determined that the house never recouped the costs of the solar panels. This was a few years ago, though. Perhaps newer technologies will make it economically feasible.

" It was determined that the house never recouped the costs of the solar panels."

Considering most houses generate zero then whatever amount the panels offset the cost of the house it will be a plus.

So what happens when Obama starts blocking the sun's rays to combat global warming? Will all the lights go out in the city?

I thought this was really neat. Jobs for people, clean energy, FP&L thinks they'll generate enough power to supplement other energy needs outside the development.

I agree!

In the early to mid 80's we lived on Homestead AFB in South Florida.

Almost all the houses had Solar panels. At least the Officers' homes.

Just don't ask for a cost benefit analysis snark!

I think you can assume long term costs will be ten times normal baseline energy sources!!!

I think you can assume that any post by Dave the Wanker will be ten times more inane than the average post.

anyway I am 110% behind r&d for solar, it is the way of the future. Problem is you can't just replace baseline sources with supplemental sources overnight.

Just mandating it from the zero's desk won't make it efficient.

Yeah axe, why talk about costs, when you can just lie?

My point exactly, Wanker!!!

As long as fools like Wanker will believe the Rtard talking heads and flushbot their lies on every blog that doesn't ban them, who needs to talk actual facts. Facts just get lost in the chaff.

What is wrong with you axe, can't talk facts? You are a typical dr left clown.

www.sciam.com

I KNOW Scientific Amercian knows more then you do tool

"By 2050 solar power could end U.S. dependence on foreign oil and slash greenhouse gas emissions

That's not next year dude, is it?

"That's not next year dude, is it?"

That's right, dummy. If it can't be done in one year, why bother?

So like the typical Fox viewer, Wanker figures that if it can't be done before bedtime, it isn't worth doing.

This is the kind of retarded thinking that got the world into the fucked up mess it is in today.

Thanks a lot, Rtards!!!!

I just hope they don't decide to name it "Solar City" 'cause the name sucks.

How about Sun City Christine??

Buzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Noppe already a Sun City Florida

"Babcock Ranch" is the name given in the article.

PV (solar cells) makes sense in Southwest Florida. That part of Florida doesn't have enough reliable wind or wave energy and is flat for hydro. PV is probably not going to be the ultimate 'best' alternative energy, but with the advances being announced so frequently, it has a shot a being a good secondary source. It is good to see a project like this. Especially one being developed by private companies.

I'm all for solar.. and I'm glad they're doing this.. but at the present state of technology, solar has very limited application..

Plenty of folks are working on the technology, there will be huge payoffs for whomever can come up with a more efficient solar cell, but for the foreseeable future, solar isn't going to do it.

We still need oil, and we're going to for the rest of probably for the lifetime of everyone on this blog.

So.. drill here, drill now.. is still smart, AND do solar ..

Great article!

Arthur C. Clarke died a year ago, but he's still writing first-class science fiction!

Hey,
This is really neat. Even it it doesn't have a viable RO right now, it will at lease be a proof of concept. Think about how much the first incandescent light cost. Ramp up production, go through the normal product improvement cycles, and in a few years from now you could have a viable solution. The more we wait, the longer it is until we get that solution.

I'll bet after it's all said and done, someone will see things that could have been done a little better. And then the next project will incorporate those improvements, and the cycle will repeat itself again.

Continous improvements, what a concept.

Dinny

If they had nude volleyball, then they would be on to something.

Wow.... We have enough oil out west to totally be energy independent. Solar is great but totally cut off the middle east!

So this is where old suns go to die. I bet it dwarfs all other retirement communities.

That's right, dummy. If it can't be done in one year, why bother?

Typical dr left response. Or axe's attacking and name calling. Atypical of you dude's. I never said we shouldn't, I did "ask about costs"

Reread my posts then go fuck yourselves. You know read all of it instead of your selective reading!

Some of the stupidest fucks on the internet, the dr left

"Perhaps newer technologies will make it economically feasible.

Perhaps you should STFU unless you actually know something.

What's the city in Germany that generates a high percentage of its electricity from solar power? Freiburg

I encourage anyone who wants to learn about the subject to read all 7 pages of my link.
