A group of business owners and residents on Hawaii's Kauai island pulled together and completed a $4 million repair job to a state park -- for free -- rather than waiting months or years longer for the government to do it.

Too bad Obama wasn't born in Hawaii.

The right

This must be stopped!!!! God damned community activists trying to blur the lines between socialism and capitalism I tell you!!!!!

Nuke that bridge!!! Hang every one of those workers. Burn their surfboards. Buncha commie hippie bastards.

Flush Rimjob

Axe--you don't seem to understand that this is exactly the kind of thing that Rush would applaud.

You can't stop a knee-jerk jerk.

This is unpatriotic!

How are overpaid and underworked bureaucrats and union contstruction workers supposed to make a living ???

These are actually the kind of projects the stimulus package should be investing in.....

Build stuff. Improve our infrastructure. I doubt the stimulus can bring us out of the recession anyway but at least we'd be putting the money to use on stuff that has long term benefits.

Seriously, I am surprised they were "allowed" to do this without someone suing to stop them.

It's a fair bet that if government financed the project it would have cost ten times more.

Does this bridge actually go somewhere?

Good on ya Hawaii. Makes me proud to be a native. Now lets see if the state does their part and cuts the red tape to actualy open the park and take advantage of the work the people did.

Pretty sad when the people can get it done in 8 days then have to wait around for the paperwork to make it official.

For all those who want more government remember this next time your screaming for the government.

exactly the kind of thing that Rush would applaud.

That's correct...our tax dollars being given away to corporate america and millionaires while the work that should be done with those tax dollars are done by the citizens for free.

This just proves that our tax dollars can be squandered on the uber wealthy at a faster rate.

More tax cuts for billionaires!

If you are so concerned about the citizens doing work for free, then why don't you send them money?

That citizens have to take it upon themselves to repair a public road speaks for itself to our priorities.

Lets hope some of this infrastructure spending ensures this is not required again in our lifetimes.

What a load of hogwash. FYI the DLNR (Dept. of Land and Natural Resources) that is responsible to maintain these parks has been gutted by the Linda Lingle administration to the point where the parks are falling apart island wide. Yea it was a 4 million dollar job, but only because the cronies in power have allowed private contractors to take over nearly every aspect of government jobs here in Hawaii. The only thing the road department does here anymore is fill pot holes, cut weeds and poison the rest of them.

Lingle is our states first Republican governor since 1962 and by far the worst I can remember in 40 years of living in Hawaii.

BTW I should add that taxes and fees for everything in Hawaii have gone up, not down since Lingle got in power. The only thing that has gone down is government services.

Pretty cool, but if that bridge in the picture is worth 4 million then I'll eat my hat!

Sorry after rereading the article I see that it was more than a bridge.

I wonder if Hawaii has plans to preserve the home Obama was born in like all the other presidents?

I wonder if Hawaii has plans to preserve the home Obama was born in like all the other presidents?

Why not,We voted for him and we like him so far.Quit your whining

Hawaii has a bridge?? I thought they canoed or boated or flew to each island?? That's weird.
