The Veterans Affairs Department is investigating a possible link between a patient's positive HIV test and unsterilized equipment that exposed thousands of veterans to infectious diseases. The VA earlier this year warned more than 10,000 veterans to get blood tests because they could have been exposed to contamination while getting colonoscopies in Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Miami.

Oops?

Now who fucked up here, it isn't exactly clear was it the VA hospitals or this Olympus American Inc?

The article reads like Olympus fucked up when it was supposed to be sterilizing equipment for the VA, if so did this equipment also end up in civilian hospitals.

Either way I hope the fall out from this is minimal, meaning that I hope a minimal numbers of patients end up sick.

The positive test was the first reported since the department warned veterans treated at three clinics that they might be at risk.

Give them credit for their response. They're doing the right thing by publicizing the problem and making such an effort to track down patients who were potentially affected. A lot of organizations would never do this because it makes it easier for the patients to win lawsuits against them.

Speaking of HIV, you better play safe with your ladyboys, Vermin.

Taking care of Veterans is uneccessary social spending according to the Contract On America.

What did they do--stick the things in the dishwasher?

Someone should be arrested--but unlikely as there will be whining and deflection that it was nobody's fault.

Hope they don't file any of those nusiance lawsuits and take any of our hard earned tax dollars!

This is the machine that Olympus uses to Disinfect the scopes. A chemical called cidex is flushed through the scope. Problem is there is multiple fittings on an endoscope and if each fitting does not have cidex flushing it out there can be blood and other body matter left behind. This is huge for Olympus. The healthcare divisions have been struggling the last few years and the hematology was laready sold earlier this year to a competitor named Beckman Coulter.

There seems to be something very suspicious involved in these happenings. How could this happen in three veteran hospitals, and apparently within time proximity, but in hospitals not in close proximity to each other? A full and in depth investigation should be made to rule out any type of maliciousness against veterans.

It sounds like it could be the fault of a company they pay to sterilize their equipment. (See Rasta's #9, for example.) If that's the case, be glad the VA caught it and is reporting it; that company almost certainly does work for other hospitals, too.

The soft kill of eugenics creeps on....

Exactly why I have private insurance and don't go to the VA. I knew someone that went to the VA for treatment. They took his blood pressure and it was 235/120 and they let him leave the hospital and drive back to Abilene from Big Spring without getting his blood pressure down. Just to show how abnormal that blood pressure reading is, normal is 120/80. If that is the kind of health care democrats say is so excellent, I don't want it and neither should you!

LWalk:

I know many people who have received bad health care, wrong diognosis's and blatatant uncaring physicians while having private insurance.

It's not the type of coverage, it's the particular physicians who are the problem.

Lisa,

Most of the VA doctors are from India.
