Well deserved for Metallica, so, so for RUN DMC...not much rock and roll there.

Hero of The DAy

Liked Metallica until load then it was downhill for me.

Horrible Music.

Best Darwin Awards Story Ever.

Two fans that didn't have tickets tried to go over the back fence. Unfortunately it was a 50 foot drop. The first fan over the fence is hanging on for dear life to a tree he fell into. So the second fan tries to rescue him by hooking a rope to his van and throwing it to his buddy. Only he drove thwe wrong way through the fence into the tree onto his buddy. Needless to say, they missed that and every other concert.

Snopes calls Shenanigans on your fake story.

Metallica - Master of Puppets

Old and quite possibly overplayed, but made of 100% Grade-A Pure Awesome all the same.

Speaking of pure awesome, I was lucky enough to hear Chuck Chillout dj this record on 107.5 WBLS back in the day.

Run DMC - You're Blind
www.80svideos.tv

It's nicely indicative of the class war that Metallica turned into whiny douchebags and Jam Master Jay got murdered.

I'M CREEPING DEATH!

Ah, back when metal was more than 3 palm muted chords and a bunch of emo-ass lyrics. I'll be mad if Pantera doesn't make it btw.

dont prey whatever you do

Reinacted on the "Darwin Awards" DVD at your local rental shop. The author claims to fully document all events surrounding the deaths. She has a ppopular website of the same name.

Shweet - i got their tickets for the november show. Last time i saw them they were awesome. Very excited to see them again in november!

"Sell out a ca" has sucked since Cliff Burton died!I want a refud for "Garbage days revisited"

"Ah, back when metal was more than 3 palm muted chords and a bunch of emo-ass lyrics"

U obviously haven't been listening todays real metal.

Try some gojira.

I spent a day at the RnRHoF a few years back. It was a very fun day. I think I read every display. We got there as it opened and the guard had to come along and ask us to leave at the end of the day.

Highly recommended

Ditto. Not only the displays are interesting, but the architecture itself. I go out of my way to see an I.M Pei designed building.

Too bad Metallica isn't one tenth of one percent of who they were before the black album was released. Kirk and Robert Trujillo are the best thing the band has going for them these days. What I wouldn't give to see them break out from under Lars/James' insanity and do their own thing. Could even add Jason to the mix... and Tim Alexander on drums. That would be one hell of a two bass band.

Awesome for Run and DMC. Maybe Rev. Run will get his head out of his brother's ass for a moment and treat DMC with some respect for a change.

***"What I wouldn't give to see them break out from under Lars/James' insanity and do their own thing. Could even add Jason to the mix... and Tim Alexander on drums. That would be one hell of a two bass band."***

I have to admit, I'm not the biggest fan of Metallica, like `em, don't love `em. And agreed, Lars and James have taken that band down a road most old Metallica fans don't like. It would be best if they could find their way back to that pre Black place (although I don't really hate all of Black). But honestly, if it's not James singing and Lars on the drums, it ain't Metallica. I'l never forget the first time I heard Lars banging out the sextuplets on the double bass on "One".

"Darkness, imprisioning me, all that I see, absolute horror..." Classic

And justice for all is their most progressive album because they allowed Jason to be an active participant in the process. After that they made their millions, retreated to their luxurious homes post tour and would meet up again a few months later, James and Lars would have the songs pretty much completed. Since then its been pretty formulaic. Oh, and James took singing lessons.

I don't hate the Black Album completely either, but the writing was definitely, unmistakably, on the wall by then.

I know that without those two jerks it wouldn't be Metallica, but Kirk, Jason and Robert are amazing musicians who've never been given the opportunity to show what they can really do while members of this band, imho.

Danny Carey from Tool would be an interesting drummer to round those three out too.

You be illin'

The "Load" period sucked. St. Anger was garbage. Death Magnetic is very good, in my opinion, and is a worthy addition to the classic Metallica (1983-1988) catalogue. They should quit while they are ahead.

It should be renamed "The Popular Music Hall of Fame" because they really don't put in to many rock acts anymore. Madonna a few years ago killed it all. Kind of like Jethro Tull winning the Grammy for "Best Heavy Metal Act"

I'd be happy if they just did the nostalgia circuit from here on. Its tough to write hard, gritty, angry metal when you're a millionaire. No suffering to draw inspriation from. Emotional pain, sure, but then you're just an emo band with heavy distortion on your flying v (hear that, James?).

Kind of like Jethro Tull winning the Grammy for "Best Heavy Metal Act"

That was the last time I made it a point to watch the grammy's.

Metallica has always been the weaker Megadeth! They should have called it quits when the bus took out Cliff. They have not written one decent piece of music since.

I agree. In a sense, it's sort of a badge of honor not to be inducted at this point.

#23 | Posted by Hagbard_Celine

Me too. On a side note, Hag, we can discuss music in this thread and NOT hijack it for once!

I really like Ride the Lightning.

"For Whom the Bell Tolls" and "Creeping Death" are great songs.

"Fade to Black" is arguably their best song within their entire body of work.

As is often the case with Rock bands, their older stuff is definitely better. I haven't been able to get into any of their material post ...And Justice for All

Madonna a few years ago killed it all.

It's very much akin as to what Yasir Arafat and Al Gore did to the Nobel Peace Prize.

Megadeth has been more consistent. However, they wrote some absolute crap, too. Remember "Risk"? What about "Youthanasia"?

Of the so-called "Big Four" of classic 1980s thrash bands, Slayer has been the most consistent in my opinion (excluding Diobolus in Musica which was a brief unsuccessful departure into "nu-metal")

I love Megadeth. Did you see the Metallica doc, "Some Kind of Monster"? There's a scene where they're in therapy session with Dave Mustaine. Depressing.

And you hear that Mustaine became a born-again Christian?

I thought Jason was a real influence on AJFA (as good as the first three, imo), but after that, I agree about it being all down hill. how can you say you don't like Blackened... Harvester of Sorrow? And though its all covers, I loved the $5.98 EP... Last Caress is awesome.

Yeah, its good not to be guilty of a thread hijack.

Of all of the '80's "hair" bands, I was always partial to "The Scorpions".

Cliff Burton was the best bassist Metallica ever had, and screw anybody who disagrees.

Newstead was good on the black album, but Load was, by and large, crap - and as far as I'm concerned, Re-Load and St. Anger don't exist.

That said, S&M is still very entertaining, especially the performences of "Call of Ktulu" and "For Whom the Bell Tolls." But of course, both of those tracks are from their best album, so that's not surprising!

Jason started off ok, the 5.98 rocked! I blame mostly Bob Rock for Metallica sucking. The guy produced Cher for G-d's sake!

Metallica introduced the sequal to rock music. The Unforgiven II, III? Load, Re-Load? Garage Days Re-revisited? They ran out of steam years ago.

For me though, the best is Kill'em All. Every song on that thing is great. Plus its got Anesthesia/Pulling Teeth which the bass player in me can never forget (I can play all the easier parts, lol).

#28 Slayer
Yes, can't forget them. Haven't they gone through like six drummers? The double bass in that band is killer on the knees.

Oh, god, Jeff. Lumping Metallica in with the hair bands.... shame.

"I blame mostly Bob Rock for Metallica sucking."

Good point. Lars definitely plays his role there too though.

The Scorpions are Germany's revenge for losing the war.

HC,

I didn't mean to lump Metallica in with the hair bands.

For the most part, I thought the hair bands royally sucked. They were then to rock'n'roll as to what rap is now to ALL music. I was merely pointing out that the Scorpions were a relative 'diamond in the ruff' when it came to hair bands.

I love Joecartoon!

Metallica lumped themselves in with hairbands in 1988 when they toured on the Monsters of Rock Tour.

Kingdom Come
Dokken
Metallica
Scorpions
Van Hagar
I forgot who else....

"Metallica lumped themselves in with hairbands in 1988 when they toured on the Monsters of Rock Tour."

Ouch!

Hey, if Metallica didn't play, it would be 10 to 1 girl to guy ratio at that show.

Dokken - Ouuur love is burnin', burnin' like a flame!

Scorpions - Fight babe I'll fight to win back your love again...

Van Hagar - How do I know when it's love? I can't tell you but it lasts forever!

Kingdom Come - I want to be your best friend for all of time/ I want to be the tissue for your tears

thanks to lyricsfreak.com, honest.

Sure you looked up the lyrics...

Full confession time: I dug Dokken in high school. Tooth and Nail was a great album.

I remember going to the Monsters of Rock show at the Orange Bowl. It was awesome to see the entire stadium banging their heads as Metallica debued a new song they were releasing in six months called "And Justice for All." I still get chills remembering that moment.

For about a month I dug Dokken in 10th grade. Thought George Lynch was a good guitar player. He is/was, but that band he was in.... I guess I thought the same thing about CC Deville/Phyllis Diller too.

Dokken got me laid in high school. No other band was able to get that done with the exception of Keel and that was only because she was a big Keel fan.

Jeez... Keel. Haven't thought of them in a long time. Wait, maybe I'm thinking of Kyuss? Yeah, Kyuss. Don't remember Keel at all. Wiki'd them.... recognize all the members names though.

I had to tolerate the Cure for that. Hated them at the time, grew to appreciate them later on.

Keel is the biggest sellout ever! He changed his name from "Ron Keel" to "Ronnie Lee Keel" and has become a Country and Western singer because he SUCKED at metal. Their best song was a cover of a Bruce Springsteen song. I was a HUGE METALHEAD in high school.

Now I remember them. Yeah, they never did it for me.

I blew out several stereo systems listening to early Metallica growing up, fav song was always Orion, but...

Metallica hasn't done meaningful sh!t in over 20 years, they belong in the old man hall of fame, funny how they are delusional that they are still vital. Not with the shit songs they wrote since they faded with the Black album.

I've seen Metallica 5-6 times. The shows went from totally awesome in the 80s to ehhh whatevea onward...

Master of Puppets sounded like crap at the hall of fame induction, were they trying to make it a speed metal demo?

Jethro Tull has 10 kick ass rock albums. Metallica has 4.
Tommy Iommi was an original member of Jethro Tull. Is that heavy enough?

NO! Three words, Ian Anderson's Flute.

But are you arguing that Tull deserved that 88 grammy over Metallica?

Repug,
I took Jethro Tull winning the best Heavy Metal grammy the same way they took it! Ian Anderson said "I didn't realize we were metal."

Glad to see the recognition for Jeff Beck.

Wasn't he already in for the Yardbirds? How much has he done apart from guest appearances for the last 40 years? I dig him though.

I saw that show in Memphis....I think you listed all of the bands.....

Right before Van Hagar came on the whole stadium started throwing their cups of beer everywhere. So much that a beer mist hung over the whole stadium. My friends and I spent that time whipping cups of ice at a guy in a Poison t-shirt.....

I would probably sympathize with Metallica more if Lars hadn't been such a whiny little bitch after Tull won their 1st Grammy.

I mean fuck - come on its Jethro Tull, they don't need to validate themselves to anyone, especially Lars.

It does show how out of step with what is relevant at the time the Grammys are though.

Like but don't luff Metalica and Run-DMC.

Glad they got inducted.

Props to both.

Jeff Beck aint god but he is a legendary and most influential musician who deserved wotever kudos are inherent in being inducted.

Special shout out to Little Anthony and the Imperials.

Luff that old skool doo-wop sound.

It's very much akin as to what Yasir Arafat and Al Gore did to the Nobel Peace Prize.

~JeffJ

The NPP was dead long before that.

Remember Kissinger?

Be Well.

/One a side note... Spud can't liten to Mettallica w/o thinking of a story from some years back now where a pregnant teen gave birth at her Graduation ceremony/dance in the girls washroom and drowned her new-born in the toilet. She then went to the DJ to request that they play "Unforgiven"

//Not rteally here.

My friends and I spent that time whipping cups of ice at a guy in a Poison t-shirt.....

~Shredder.

As ya do.

Good call, Spud woulda joined in.

Be Well.

U obviously haven't been listening todays real metal.

My problem with today's more interesting metal is that singer always seems to be shrill, screachy, or too deep and throaty. Not much in the way of actual singing. It's always a disappointment, cuz I'll start getting into the complicated riffs and times and then the singer starts in and I'm usually just like, ugh!

I'll check out your recommendation, though. =)

Plus, I always prefer making my own.

saw Metallica on the Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets tours. loved Lars' offbeat on Leper Messiah

#58 | Posted by LIVE_OR_DIE

agree. i want so much to dig Killswitch, but I can't get past the guttural, cookie monster vocals. riffs are outstanding, though

Metallica is great.

They're good enough to download their entire catalog.

Here's the torrent.
