Colorado's oldest newspaper will publish its final edition Friday. The Rocky Mountain News, less than two months away from its 150th anniversary, will be closed after a search for a buyer proved unsuccessful, the E.W. Scripps Co. announced today.

Newspapers are going the way of telephone booths.

One less paper for minitrue to re-edit

Newspapers once made about a 35 percent profit margin, but it only worked so long as they could control the technology: even a small offset press is millions of dollars to buy and operate.

With the Internet anybody can go into the 'news' business -- and many of them do it for free. So newspapers no longer own the techology or the expertise.

As much as I loved the work, I'm glad I got out of newspapers when I did.

Scripps has been smart, though, buying up cable TV properties. They have emphasized 'point-and-shoot' TV like the Home & Garden Channel, where they don't have the expense of writers. Just selling shit.

Newspapers are failing because their big chain owners saddled themselves with massive debt to buy them. They blame the Internet and other factors, but if the publishers weren't a bunch of Gordon Gekkos, they might be in better shape to survive the shitty economy.

ver, I think it has more to do with what they publish. People don't want to read a bunch of cheerleaders for socalism.

Snippy,

The people who fall for the stupid 'socialism' Flushbot nonsense never read a fucking newspaper in their life other than perhaps the comics page.

You 'Socialist' pants-pissers are more likely to watch Fox or listen to the pedophile from palm beach on the radio.

People don't want to read a bunch of cheerleaders for socalism.

Which is why Murdoch's stock is doand wall Street Journalwn by 70%, right? cause his papers like the NYPost are nothing but a bunch of Communist mainfestos, right?

Reality0- get used to it Snippy. It's gonna be around for a while.

I don't know rcade. Denver had two major newspapers. Not many cities can support two.

Add on the increase in web access and free news feeds and it will doom the traditional newspaper unless they learn to adapt quickly.

and the bitch of it is, since so few papers do their own reporting, and linking is so easy, they can't do paid online subscriptions.

I do not agree with you so I will resort to name calling.

People that are defending a lie, and, or are delusionally in denial resort to name calling.
That's basic psychology.

Hans will be along soon to pull up one of my comments, calling names......hahaha.

Jeff, Time to put on our flak vests.

I do no tknow, I really enjoy reading the paper in the morning with my coffee, and on the toilet. But that is just me, I could be wrong.

Chickenfucker,

You forgot to call me a name. Or are you still trying to come up with one? How about 'liberal'. That always works a charm!!!

True to form.

I'm curious, rcade. is the retort self-sufficient?

Hope I'm not being too nosy.

wtf am i going to use for my birdcage?

"socalism"

Classic.

"I'm curious, rcade. is the retort self-sufficient?

I was just talking with Goat about that last night, not to be nosy too Rog, but I hope you at least make a modest pittence. It's a heck of a site.

You can be anti-abortion without bombing a clinic you know. God knows what we've done in our lives....If you really believe in Him, you might wanna watch your words.

Hahahaahhaha, You've never read any of my posts have you?

Lighten up, you puss.....

Don't mess with Jehovah!!!

I'm god Bocaink, you are on the direct line.

Ministry-Psalm 69

Now what are all the Messiah Worshippers going to wipe their asses with after he makes toilet paper too expensive to afford?

Now Denverites will have to get their news from The Messiah's main squeeze, Chris "Thrill Up My Leg" Matthews....

Ultra liberal slants and the union have doomed this paper. Good riddance.

"Ultra liberal slants and the union have doomed this paper. Good riddance."

These are the same wingnuts who call Obama a radical and blanche at the thought of health care for all. The fact is that newpapers are big ultra-conservative corporate entities listed on the NYSE, and unions worked hand in glove with publishers to keep the product alive.

Newspapers failed to adapt to changes of the electronic age. Give them more and better interactive puzzles, more enlightened analyses of the days events, etc., and maybe ... herm

We killed Newspapers, the bloggers. You don't have to read the paper to read their stories nor do you even have to goto their websites, you have us, Drudge, Raw Story, Newsmax, MSN, Yahoo, etc all stealing their work and doing it for free. We killed the print media. It was us.

Give them more and better interactive puzzles

Actually , the NYT does have a very good interactive xword. You have to download an app, but it works great. But I still just print it out and carry it with me.

BTW, it's not free. It costs $35/yr. But for a xword fan who thinks Will Shortz edits the best ones on the planet, it's worth it.

I suspect your comment comes from your own bias rather than experience or knowledge. IF you lived here and/or read the RMN, you'd realize how much you are off-base on both statements:

newsbusters.org

The status of the RMN was much more tied to its inability to compete with the Denver Post (BTW, they aren't doing too well either) in this local market and the changing fortunes for newspaper media (in general) in these times.
