U.S. Sen. Roland Burris has acknowledged trying to raise money for former Gov. Rod Blagojevich before being appointed to the Senate. According to a transcript posted on the Chicago Tribune's site, Burris told reporters in Peoria Monday night that he talked to some friends about putting together a fundraiser after being called by the ex-governor's brother.

My question is, if he gets the boot has he been there long enough to get the Senate pension?

Is Obama still standing behind this choice too?

Burris testified last month to a committee that recommended impeaching Rod Blagojevich that he had told only one Blagojevich associate he was interested in being senator.

But he released an affidavit over the weekend indicating he had spoken to four others, including the calls from Rob Blagojevich.

So whose court---other than Buris'---does this put the ball in? Illinois State Legislature?

not surprised one single iota.

now, he needs to step down and a special election be held - time for a new underhanded person to take that spot!

I think they could consider perjury charges against him. Then if convicted the Senate could remove him.

He should bow out now.

There is so much embarrasment in Illinois--it's beyond funny.

In the meantime--if he stays--every vote he makes or every committee he sits on is tainted.

He is toast.

I still want to know about the pension. If he resigns does he get to collect? If he gets the boot does he get to collect.

The guy needs to just slink away somewhere real fast.

Blago - the gift that just keeps on giving.

Boy, talk about egg on the face of the Dems.

He is toast.

A rare moment of agreement with Ms. Murphy.

Some serious egg on the face of the Dems.

The guy's gotta go. "Mistakes were made" might've worked for Reagan, but it's not gonna fly for Burris.

Some serious egg on the face of the Dems.

Well, sort of, but NOBODY wanted this guy in the first place. Except Blago who is probably laughing his ass off.

But they took him anyway after first saying they weren't.

Harry Reid strikes again.

True - but their grounds were a little shaky, and ultimately I don't think would have held up legally. But I bet they're wishing they'd tried a little harder about now.

Update:

Sen. Roland Burris, appointed by now impeached Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich, is under fire by state lawmakers for what they believe to be inconsistencies in testimony and sworn affidavits. The perceived discrepancies are great enough that on Tuesday, Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan referred Burris' testimony to prosecutors for consideration of perjury charges.

The specter of a perjury investigation was raised only after Sen. Burris admitted Monday night that at the same time he was being considered for President Obama's former Senate seat, he attempted to arrange a fundraiser for the embattled governor. Burris said he gave up and deemed it inappropriate, but only after he'd failed to attract contributors.

"Madigan released a letter to Sangamon County State's Attorney John Schmidt indicating he was referring a transcript of Burris' testimony and two affidavits Burris submitted on how he got appointed to the Senate by former Gov. Rod Blagojevich," reported the Rockford Register Star.

This ain't nuthin' for the Democrats, homey. Lots of worse stuff gets glossed over all of the time. And this is racist, since there is no other African American U.S. Senator, and now there is an effort to oust him. We should have a civil rights and a voting rights act, both with teeth in them. Racist voting patterns preclude adequate black representation in the U.S. Senate. The Supreme Court should decree, or some law should provide, a set-aside of a certain number of seats for black candidates. Fair is fair.

It was ridiculous that the Dems caved and let this scoundrel in the Senate in the first place. I think they were scared by Burris and Rush saying that it had to be racial to not let him in. No one believed it one little bit, but it gave them an excuse to cave.

A rare moment of agreement with Ms. Murphy.

Thanks San--

"if he gets the boot has he been there long enough to get the Senate pension?"

No.

Members of Congress are eligible for a pension at age 62 if they have completed at least five years of service. They are eligible for a pension at age 50 if they have completed 20 years of service, or at any age after completing 25 years of service.

Thanks!

Ahhh Democrats, the gift that keeps on giving!

They should have never allowed him in the first place. Time for an election.

Washington Post"

"From the moment that Mr. Burris was selected, he strove to portray himself as a blameless public servant. The sad pictures of Mr. Burris being cast out into the rain by the Democratic leadership of the Senate, which initially refused to seat him, turned public opinion in his favor. Mr. Burris got his seat. But this latest revelation makes a mockery of his professions of no quid pro quo. It is a violation of the public trust. The people of Illinois have suffered enough. Mr. Burris should resign."

Form "Burris' Ethics Bubble Bursts, Opening Door For Expulsion" ---

"We are beyond the constitution now," said Ken Gross, a Washington lawyer who heads Skadden Arp's Political Law practice. "It is within the Senate's authority to expel him from office. And the standards are amorphous... In recent history I don't know if a flat perjury conviction has ever been the basis for removal but it certainly could be. And in this case the Senator came in with two strikes against him already. There won't be many people standing up for him now."

right after David "Diaper" Vitter.

Is there really anything new with Illinois politics...did this really surprise anyone???? business as usual all around there.. he should be out the door as soon as possible... nothing racist here, just pure 'crooked politics' at it's best.. Illinois politicians all have PHD's in questionable politics and how they reached their positions..

I don't know how anyone can support his staying in the Senate at this point. These aren't allegations -they're his own words (just as with Blago himself).

What bothers me most is the tremendous arrogance shown by Burris -though he's not alone in that arrogance. Why is it that when someone in office is demonstrated to be not qualified to hold the public trust, they always -Always- fight tooth and nail to hold their seat? Why do we never see elected officials demonstrate honesty and honor and step aside?

Because the people running for office have to have tremendous egos to do so in the first place.
Beyond that, money and power will make people do ridiculous things.

Last but certainly not least, the American public will forget about Burris as soon as Britney shows her cooter again. The majority have very short attention spans and Burris may rightly guess he'll be forgotten amongst the pop culture craze.

What bothers me most is the tremendous arrogance shown by Burris -though he's not alone in that arrogance.

Go back a few months and follow the lies from the top of the Dem heap since Blago's name made the headlines. Axlerod, Obama, Emmanuel all came out with conflicting statements. Why is anyone surprised Burris was not forthcoming? Lie, deny or defy. The staple of Illinois politics. Now they have advanced from a regional infection, to a national cancer.

alright boys and girls .

its time to put your posts where your mouth has been for some time now about corruption in congress....

and as disgusting as that may sound, LITTERALLY, pony on up to the bar on this one and we will all agree

this bastard has got to go

and maybe this shit will spur a change in how the senate takes care of empty seats....once and for all
like the PEOPLES HOUSE DOES IT...

Funny, he lied so well that I was actually pulling for people to lay off of him. With that talent, he should do really well as a Senate Democrat and fit right in. That is, if he's allowed to stay.

Oh, gawd, Burris is yammering away in the other room on MSNBC right now (my daytime substitute for my night light). Will somebody either (a) haul a sack over him or (b) shoot him with a tranquilizer dart or (c) seal his lips with Krazy Glue or (d) do anything short of killing the bastard to just...make...him...go..away?

just...make...him...go..away?
