Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

A milder than usual U.S. flu season is masking a growing concern about widespread resistance to the antiviral drug Tamiflu and what that means for the nation's preparedness in case of a dangerous pandemic flu. Tamiflu, the most commonly used influenza antiviral and the mainstay of the federal government's emergency drug stockpile, no longer works for the dominant flu strain circulating in much of the country, government officials said Tuesday. Of samples tested since October, almost 100% of the strain -- known as type A H1N1 -- showed resistance to Tamiflu.

Who spends money on anti-viral drugs? Nut it up like a real human.

Who spends money on anti-viral drugs? Nut it up like a real human.

Antivirals are virus-specific and the majority are anti-HIV drugs. For influenza, there are amantadine derivatives, which are already obsolete, oseltamavir (tamiflu) and Zanamavir (relenza). Tamiflu is pretty much useless now, and Relenza will soon join the rest. Pharmaceutical companies have little incentive to develop a drug that will rapidly become obsolete and will never be in great demand unless there is a pandemic.

As far as Tamiflu goes, the biggest buyers are the Japanese and the US government. Even the limited use in America and Japan was enough to cause the H1N1 strain to evolve resistance. The point I'm trying to make is that because of the risk of a pandemic, there should be a greater financial incentive to develop these drugs, and the new ones must be reserved as our ace in the hole should a pandemic break out.

Things don't evolve. This article is stupid. Science doesn't make any sense cause I don't understand it.

Nyet. The world is past due for a pandemic.

The world is past due for a pandemic.

Da. But there isn't that much interest in developing new drugs quickly because pharm companies don't do R+D out of the kindness of their hearts or the good of the species. It's profit, baby, and unless someone makes it profitable for them, we won't see any anti-influenza drugs.

Sooner or later the Earth is going to find a way to pare down the organism that consumes three times what it can support.

Man is just delaying and compounding the final number by ultimately increasing the strength and resistance of viral and bacterial organisms.

All your cells are belong to us.

We think we rule the world, yet we are just here for virusi(?) to feed on

A secret ploy by Rumsfeld to rid the earth of the undesirables.

Tamiflu was and is hopeless. But it made a shit load of money for Rumsfeld.

Sarcasm doesn't work too well, if you don't understand your own premise...

check out the difference between adaptation, which no-one anywhere disputes, and evolutionary change in which one species supposedly changes into another species..

Once this virus adapts.. its still a virus.. not a frog..

Just tryin to help..

"if you don't understand your own premise..."

It seems you lack understanding yourself, but evolution naysayers have yet to let that stop them.

I read about this at least a month ago

nmg_no,

Back to the science books for you, viruses don't turn into frogs, chickens don't turn into cats, etc...gradual changes over millions of years, not a single generation. It's not magic, there is a fossil record.

AHAHAHA

You use the fossil record as "evidence"?

The fossils were put here by the devil himself in an attempt to trick us into questioning God's existence! If you think the fossil record is telling the truth, you're bound for suffering!

Man and dinosaur lived together in harmony until God decided to kill the dinosaur's and scattered their bones all over the planet, which by the way, is the center of the universe. The planets rotate around the sun...poppycock!

Anyway, back to the dinosaurs. You see. God knew there would come a day when a guy like you would use the fossils as proof of "evolutionary development". God has tricked you and you're gonna burn if you don't straighten up!

Remember the hysteria created with Bush and the flu bug by Kennedy.

Turned out to be false....not a word about the facts.

on that Dinopsaur thing, the "Creation Museum" shows children playing with Dinosaurs (one had a saddle), "Why don't the Dinosaurs eat those kids: asked a little girl, "There was no death till after the fall so all creatues were vegetarion" was the answer, then the little girl said "But there were no children till after the fall", that's when they rushed the little girl away!

fundies lying about Dinosaurs to snare the kiddies!

While Tamiflu may be defunct, the sweet delicious thimerosal never goes out of style.

The problem is if the average American goes to the doctor and expects to get medicine. Regardless of what they have. Then they don't follow the prescription instructions and that leads to drug immunity. Plus the unnecessary use of anti-biotic hand soaps and such.

I had a professor once who (jokingly) claimed that the best thing you can do build strong immunity in a newborn is to dunk it in a bucket of shit.

"I had a professor once who (jokingly) claimed that the best thing you can do build strong immunity in a newborn is to dunk it in a bucket of shit."

that was no professor, that was FWTHOM's doctor and he wasn't kidding, now you know why FWTHOM is so full of shit!

Hooray?

"Back to the science books for you, viruses don't turn into frogs, chickens don't turn into cats, etc...gradual changes over millions of years, not a single generation. It's not magic, there is a fossil record."

I was making a point about adaptation, which is a fact (not magic) , and evolution, which is a theory..

I'm an engineer, and we like to see facts.. the oft-quoted fossil record has a some big holes, such as.. for one instance.. species seem to appear all at once, not gradually..

Depends on your philosophy as to how you interpret that.. but there's no hard science to support you either way..

Which is why we still call it a theory

I know they don't cover that on MTV, but you could try reading a bit.

Apparently no one ever taught you the concept of punctuated equilibrium.

Engineer? Yeah right. Unless you think calling what you do "janitorial engineering" somehow makes it more prestigious...

Gravity is a theory, electromagnetism is a theory, hell, so is the germ theory of disease. The fossil record will always have holes, but they aren't big enough to discount the development of species.

Creationists wouldn't be satisfied with the holes even if there was a perfectly layered stratum of every single generation of a species to the present day, what about the "Gap" between each generation after all :-P

This article contains a few examples of modern day Speciation:

Here's one from the Grand Canyon, geographic separation of a squirrel population:

Well I've led you to water, will you drink?

"Which is why we still call it a theory"
instead of showing ignorance, learn what the word "Theory" means in science.

www.fsteiger.com
en.wikipedia.org

You have no idea what "Theory" means in science, are you proud of showing your ignorance by using "Theory" improperly? Ignorant people tend to remain ignorant! You must home schooled!

"I'm an engineer, and we like to see facts.. the oft-quoted fossil record has a some big holes, such as.. for one instance.. species seem to appear all at once, not gradually.. "

what do you engineer, Bull PuPu? "Not Gradually" who told you that, the preacher?

try checking some science sites instead of posting your Bull PuPu on the Internet, here are 2 to start with:
Talk Origins
www.talkorigins.org
Scientific American www.sciam.com

if you look you may help prevent us from laughing at you, but we know you won't look, you are probably allergic to knowledge!

"I'm an engineer..."

Why doesn't that surprise me. A large portion of the anti-evo people on the national scale are engineers (there was even some sort of law or correlary made up about this). Evidently to some people being an engineer magically makes them knowledgeable about biology.

Donald Rumsfeld's shares in Tamiflu stock will take a beating and I can't think of a bigger asshole for this to happen to.

"Sarcasm doesn't work too well, if you don't understand your own premise...

Just tryin to help.."

You did, you proved your ignorance....

Flu viruses didn't adapt, they evolved, they physically changed their makeup so as no longer being susceptible to tami-flu....

In the exact same way man no longer needed a tail and it evolved into the cocyx...or like Darwin saw finches evolved different beaks to fit their diet...

and as the mounting evidence shows, dinosaurs evolved into birds.....

but that isn't writ in your book of history now is it??

LM

coccyx....thought it looked funny when I typed it.....

"I'm an engineer, and we like to see facts.. the oft-quoted fossil record has a some big holes, such as.. for one instance.. species seem to appear all at once, not gradually.."

Are you talking about the so-called explosions periods where life seems to go about drastic changes and fluctuations?

The most famous of all(I assume you know the name since you refer to it as a gap) is commonly being misrepresented by creationary scientist. Find an article of a creationary scientist who disputes the fact that most fossils(excluding soft tissue forms) can be found in times of pre-cambrian fossil record. This so-called explosion was along the lines of 20-65million years long....plenty of time for life to tinker with shape and form, and for the winning shapes to take hold and the losing shapes vanish......meyer and chien would be two creationist I would offer up.....
