Former Sen. Tom Daschle, picked by President Barack Obama to lead his health reform efforts, recently filed amended tax returns to report $128,203 in back taxes and $11,964 in interest, according to a Senate document obtained by The Associated Press. Most of the taxes were unreported income from the use of a car service provided to him by a close friend and business associate.

Wow, a Dem that does not pay their taxes. There is a surprise. When the Repubs were in control we heard all about thier corruption, etc. In reality it exists on boths sides of the isle. It is a human thing not a Dem or Repub thing. The party in control is more in the spotlight so more of these things come to light.

For years these douchebag Democrats have been telling us that rich Americans don't pay their fair share of taxes. Now it turns out that the bucket of sleaze running Treasury, and the turd picked to run our Welfare department, never bothered paying theirs. For years.

"Change we can believe in." Uh huh. What a big steaming pile of BS his cabinet room will be. Tack on a Hillary Clinton and a Bill Richardson, and it makes me wonder if any top Democrat on earth isn't conflicted or have "tax issues".

Douchebags. Last summer Warren Buffet--another big Dem donor and Obama advisor--famously declared he doesn't pay enough in taxes. Maybe we should take him at his word, and send some auditors over.

Change....for the worse....

Obama's election is doing some great things... increasing the tax coffers simply by nominating party leaders to high positions. No need to raise anyone's taxes - just get his buddies to pay up. Man, Obama's a wiz.

I just noticed this post. Good one Oo.

What's the surprise?

They don't play by their own rules, and always have an excuse at the ready.

The Rs won't protest this either. It's all inside the Beltway and they know that Daschle will play ball when the time comes. That's all they care about.

There's no integrity in Washington DC.

Not surprising they didn't include this that was reported a day earlier:

"More Daschle Tax Issues"

"January 30, 2009 11:24 PM"

ABC News has obtained the Senate Finance Committee "Report on Tom Daschle's nomination to be Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, which indicates that Daschle's tax problems were even more substantial than earlier reported."

"The report indicates that Daschle's failure to pay more than $101,000 taxes on the car and driver a wealthy friend let him use from 2005 through 2007 is not the only tax issue the former Senate Majority Leader has been dealing with since his December nomination prompted a more thorough examination of his income tax returns."

WOW you say? How about this:

"Mr. Daschle also didn't report $83,333 in consulting income in 2007."

"The Senate Finance Committee Report also notes that during the vetting process, President Obama's Transition Team "identified certain donations that did not qualify as charitable deductions because they were not paid to qualifying organizations. Daschle adjusted his contribution deductions on his amended returns for 2005, 2006 and 2007 to remove these amounts and add additional contributions." This adjustment meant a reduction in the amount he contributed to charitable foundations of $14,963 from 2005 through 2007."

And......:

"With the unreported income from the use of a car service in the amounts of $73,031 in 2005, $89,129 in 2006 and $93,096 in 2007; the unreported consulting income of $83,333 in 2007; and the adjusted reductions in charitable contributions, Daschle adds a total of $353,552 in additional income and reduced donations, meaning an additional tax payment of $128,203, in addition to $11,964 in interest."

"On January 2 of this year, Daschle filed amended tax returns to pay the $140,167 in unpaid taxes."

I guess rich Americans do not pay their fair share of taxes. Well....rich Democrats anyway.

YEAH!

That's funny, I remember them saying they were the Party of Fiscal Resposability --- which turned out to be untrue!
And what's funnier is that what you wrote above IS true !

How about we start there when talking about Who Said What!

Unfortunately when you look at all of the Ds and Rs, this is probably pretty minor compared to the rest of the pack.

Neither party has exactly done a fantastic job with money - OUR money.

Why the hell don't we elect tightwads like CPAs, etc. Sheesh!

This is petty horseshit. So he used a car service and didn't report the value of that car service as income?

Have any of you used your friend's vacation house for a weekend? Did a friend ever get a free night at a hotel for you? Found money on the street? Received a gift or two from your employer? How about that harry and david basket you received? Did all of you partisan pricks report that income?

B...gifts for pols? No problemo?

Vac home? hotel? Gift Baskets? People in private life are allowed to rec gifts up to...$12,000. ...Danforth or Tax would know exactly.

$130k in back taxes from the use of a car? WOW!!!

Don't you just love thoes straight shooting libs?

And if Tommy was not picked by Obama he would never have paid these taxes.

Same for the lying tax cheat Geithner.

Amazing how the one is lowering the bar of people he picks.

What a farce.

All this happened after he lost his election-Republicans Fault (TM)

He looks like that preacher Haggard, the one with the boy toys, to me. Wouldn't trust him.

And his wife is a lobbyist--for Boeing?

is this some kind of joke people who want us to pay higher taxes-rangel dascle-ect ect don't want to pay their taxes
jasman

"People in private life are allowed to rec gifts up to...$12,000. ...Danforth or Tax would know exactly."

$12,000 for 2008, $13,000 for 2009. (Just make sure the checks clear before 12/31.)

If it's more, they can use the 5 year plan for up to $65,000 in '09. That means a couple could give a couple $260,000, provided they file the proper form and don't gift that couple for the next 5 years. Any excess is subtracted from the giving couple's non-taxable portion of their Estate.

So...LOTS of room for bribes!

why am I reminded of the bible tale of sodom and gomorrah. Just replace sin with taxes and the cities with our 2 major parties. Now, replace the deity with O.

What a farce. #16 | POSTED BY MURPHY

As opposed to Sarah Palin. If you guys had had a horse in the race - something other than more of the same crap you've been selling for the past 8 years, you wouldn't be in this horrible situation.

I never liked Daschle but at least he paid up finally. And the USA can use the interest. He might even do a great job for his department.

BUt whoever said it above is right. They're mostly - not all- crooks when they can get away with it. Let's try holding them ALL responsible- not just the opposite party.

'Vac home? hotel? Gift Baskets? People in private life are allowed to rec gifts up to...$12,000. ...Danforth or Tax would know exactly.'

Whether or not something is a gift isn't as clear cut as you'd think. There usually needs to be "donative intent", etc. Also, you can't receive a "gift" from an employer. I will concede the 12k exclusion--but people unfamiliar with how broad "gross income" really is -- "all income from whatever source derived." Even finding money on the street is technically income. Buying a car from your father for less than FMV is income.

"$130k in back taxes from the use of a car? WOW!!!"
FOR THREE YEARS.

FOR THREE YEARS.

Honestly--i'm more concerned about his lobbyist ties. This tax shit is stupid.

He's paid them so is he now a patriot?

So we find out why Democrats don't mind raising taxes on everyone....

They don't pay them!

Ummm . . . in addition to the car, he didn't report $87,000 in consulting income, advising a private equity fund.

Suits me, though. If this is "change we can believe in", I won't bother reporting income either.

Liberals keep the double standard alive and kicking.

Liberals keep the double standard alive and kicking.

If you're a conservative, then this is what you're bound to see. If you're a liberal, then you're bound to emphasize the corruption that characterized the last 8 years of Bush. If you're an independent, you're going to see further proof that the majority of our elected officials are crooks, regardless of affiliation.

you're a mind reader! I can close down the winchester & go to sleep now. too bad obama wants to increase the size of government in all its glory. the largest employer in the u.s. is already the federal government. now, let's throw in the local governments--corruption at every level, from all parties. let's increase its size & scope! great idea.

The scary thing is that they are just getting warmed up. Wait until they get the power of their position. It's a sad day for America when tax cheats are handed positions in government. These people will wreck the country and all of us will be hammered with higher taxes by these tax cheats in office. Wealth redistribution--take it from those who earn it and give it to those who won't work.

Now that cheating is OK, I know lots of loopholes in the health care system where I can rake in lots of money from Medicare and Medicaid. Apply and get a provider number and make up medical services on ghost patients. Take in money for several months in a storefront someplace and then fold the operation. They won't ever wise up in time. Besides if you get caught, it's just a hiccup, right?

Daschle filed amended tax returns for 2005, 2006 and 2007.

recently filed amended tax returns to report $128,203 in back taxes and $11,964 in interest!

The unreported income for that service totaled more than $250,000 over three years!

Daschle also had unreported consulting income of $88,333, in 2007!

"Sen. Daschle told staff that in June 2008, something made him think that the car service might be taxable !

Yes... He was approached by the Oboma team and they asked him if he was clean enough to work for the Current administration...

I feel that if not for the job offer Mr. Daschle would not have paid a dime as he had already hidden the income. He would have never been cought without the heavy auditing that goes on during the political appointment process.

Meaning = HE CHEATED ON HIS TAXES AND PAID THEM BEFORE HE GOT COUGHT! After using a car service for FREE for THREE Years. It dawned on him that it may be taxable? Come on....

Can't float that BS by us here in New York... We hear better BS than that on a daily basis... That may work in the Hay Seed states, but we in NY know that MR. Daschle is more than likely full of doo doo.

Yes officer that is a wide screen TV in the trunk of my car.... Ahh.... Ah.... I'm gonna pay for it in three years from now... Ah... I swear on a stack of Bibles... Never mind the broken window and ringing alarm... Hey, Could you sweep up the glass?

"Now that cheating is OK, I know lots of loopholes in the health care system where I can rake in lots of money from Medicare and Medicaid..."

NOW that cheating is ok? Havent you been paying attention for all these past years? If there is a way to 'legally' cheat the system, don't you know it's the American way and business encourages it? Why do companies move offshore? Why does the govenment allow such without penalties and taxes to make it worthwhile to stay here with an American address and workforce? So on your own it's cheating, with the aid of lobbyists, it's the American way.

It's greed- and whether illegally done or 'legally' done, shows more than ever why regulation is severly needed. Otherwise, it's technically not cheating.

Also, not everyone cheats. It's a personal choice. Some actually behave ethically. Easier said than done in time like these. And like you say, why should we if those we should be looking up to, dont?

By the way ... I know why I don't qualify for a job in BO's Government ... I paid my taxes ... STUPID ME!!!

"Meaning = HE CHEATED ON HIS TAXES AND PAID THEM BEFORE HE GOT COUGHT!"

We impeached Clinton for lying to the government. To our surprise the electorate gave us cold comfort. Lying to the government: It's called April 15th.
Hans

Oh hell yes. Everyone should be allowed to NOT pay $130k of taxes. The SOB is a crook!!!

"What a farce.

#16 | Posted by MURPHY"

It's gonna be a looong 8-12 years, you stupid @#^&.

It's becoming painfully obvious why a democratic administration doesn't mind raising taxes.

It's because they don't pay them.

This all comes down to 1 thing, If President Obama wants me to believe that he is about change, step up to the plate and do the right thing.

This issue stinks because it is old hat BS that all these pricks put forward, kinda lets you know what they think about you and me. So, by the way keep defending these losers instead of holding them accountable because thay really CARE about you....yea right!!!!

The President needs to say, "this does stink, I don't like it, and I don't want you working for me"

Then, I would see this change which he has promised.

Your move Mr. President.
